Question 1:
Based on your experience or recent issues in the news, what are some
current problems with the Australian health system? How do these relate
to the key concepts in the readings, such as the key building blocks of a
health system?
Worldwide, Australian healthcare system is the best. The healthcare system takes
part in providing affordable and safe healthcare to all the Australians this is majorly
based on the principle of universal healthcare coverage among all the
Australians(Macri, 2016). All levels of the Australian government take part in
running the healthcare systems. These include the federal, state and territory and
local jointly (The Australian health system | Australian Government Department of
Health). Besides, Medicare funding Australian medical finances improves care given
to the Australians by providing many Australians an opportunity to seek medical,
whether in the in the public sector or the private sector. despite Australian
healthcare system performing way better as compared to other countries’
healthcare systems in the world, Australia is still undergoing
some problems making it
healthcare system inefficient (Dixit & Sambasivan, 2018). Therefore, there is to
address the upcoming issues affecting the Australian healthcare system in the
upcoming decade. Such problems include the increasing aging [population, the
technology costs, medical research issues. As of 2013, 14% of the Australian
population were of age 65 years and above and the rate is expected to rise to 21%
by 2053 (OECD, 2015). A major challenge is posed by the need to maintain the
health and wellbeing of the aging population. The old age together with the children
are more susceptible to infection owing it to the decreased immunity(Colombo et
al., 2012). Australia lacks important structures that are meant to integrate health

and medical research plans nationally. This is owing to the current pandemic corona
virus disease that as at march 2020 it has now 1709 cases of COVID 19.
Question 2:
In your basic professional training, how well were you prepared for the
core competencies of public health as identified in the readings? Can you
suggest improvements in education within your profession?
The Australian competency based educational framework for public health
programs outlines different areas of practice that the public health students should
be competent at. The different areas include monitoring and surveillance, disease
control and prevention, health protection, health promotion, health policy planning
and management and evidence based professional population health
practice(Foundation Competencies for Public Health Graduates in, n.d.). The
curriculum ensures that someone with a Master degree in public health has
specialised knowledge and skills for research, he/ she has an advanced
understanding or has an integrated understanding of a co plex body of knowledge
in public health as a discipline. Besides, the curriculum aimed in equipping a master
degree graduate with specialized and cognitive technical skills in body knowledge or
practice and that he/she can practice independently where the graduate can
analyse critically, do a reflection and synthesise complex information, concepts or
theory concerning certain health problems affecting the public. Lastly the
curriculum ensures that a master degree graduate is capable of doing a certain
research independently and establish the established theories to practice where he
can transmit the knowledge, ideas and skills to both the specialists and non-
specialist audiences. Despite the exhaustive components of the Australian
