INTRODUCTION
Organisational Behaviour is the subset of the management activities concerned with
determining, understanding and influencing individual behaviour in the organisation towards
improving organization's effectiveness (Ashkanasy and Humphrey, 2011). In this report chosen
company is TK Max. It is a subsidiary of American apparel and home goods company, selling at
prices generally lower than similar stores, headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts, United
States. This report analyses the concept of management and leadership and importance of their
skills in managing the organisation. It also determines differences and similarities between
leadership and management to understand its effectiveness in respective organisation.
MAIN BODY
MANAGEMENT
It is defined as set of activities related to functions of planning, organizing, directing and
controlling for the efficient and effective utilisation of resources in pursuit of one or more goals. It
involves responsibility to achieve the objectives through effective planning and regulation. The
basic function of management in TK Maxx is creating motivating environment in which employees
can perform and cooperate effectively towards attainment of group goals. In TK Maxx management
work can be divided into five basic functions-
Planning- The management of TK Maxx is concerned with the formulation of plans and
strategies, policies and procedures needed to achieve desired organisation objective. Proper
planning helps in proper execution of work and helps to achieve desired goals.
Organizing- TK Maxx should organize its business operations by proper allocating and
functioning of raw materials, tools, capital and personnel. Organizing involves identification
and classification of activities and proper delegation of work to meet objectives of
respective organisation (Bolinoand et. al., 2013).
Staffing- Managerial function of staffing in TK Maxx involves managing the organisation
structure through proper and effective selection of employees and rewarding and appraisal
of employees to motivate them to work effectively.
Directing- Directing involves guiding, supervising and motivating subordinate in TK Maxx
for the achievement of organisational goals. It involves overseeing the work of subordinates
by the superiors and helps them in proper execution of task.

Controlling- The purpose of controlling is the measurement of work against the set
standards and helps in taking corrections by identifying proper deviations towards the
achievement of organisational goals. In TK Maxx it helps in proper measurement and
correction of performance activities to make sure organisation achieve its goals within
stipulated time period.
Importance of management in TK Maxx
It interrelates the functions of other departments which helps in proper functioning of
business operations and helps in achieving business objectives (Carpenter, Berry and
Houston, 2014).
It largely focus on achieving objectives of TK Maxx by identifying the goals and using
different functions to attain them.
Management helps in proper dividing of task between the employees and helps in proper
completion of work within predetermined time.
Example of Management
Management plays a important role in achieving objectives and helps in resolving conflict
among employees. In TK Maxx which deals in apparel and household goods involves lot of
business operations which leads to conflicts and leads delay in work. Management greatly helps in
resolving conflicts by proper planning and organizing it work into team which avoid chaos and
leads to proper execution of work. It also helps in proper selection of employees who execute the
task properly and achieve desired outcomes.
LEADERSHIP
It is the skill of an employee encompassing the ability to lead guide and influence
individuals or team to perform work accordingly to achieve the desired results. It is a matter of
intelligence, courage to exercise influence on its followers to achieve the desired targets. Leadership
involves establishing a clear vision and sharing the vision with others by providing information,
knowledge to realize that mission and effectively coordinate and balance the conflicting interest of
members in TK Maxx (Colquitt and et. al., 2011).
Importance of leadership in TK Maxx
Providing guidance- Leader at TK maxx not only supervises the subordinates by provide
guidance in carrying business operations effectively and efficiently.
Creating confidence- Leader creates confidence in their followers by achieving full
cooperation so that they perform task with full abilities and responsibilities.

Coordination- Leaders can properly coordinate its work through reconciling personal
interest with organisational goals. This way followers work with great dedication and
enthusiasm to achieve organisational goals.
Resolving Conflicts- Leaders at TK Maxx helps in resolving conflicts among the employees
when working together. This leads to delay in task where leader provides certain decisions
and suggestions to perform task and resolve conflicts.
Training and development- As TK Maxx deals in apparel business which is very complex
business as it need to be updated with the changing demands. Leader provide with sufficient
training programmes to effectively carry their task and meet customer needs in market.

consumer demands. When the respective industry wants to increase its sales it needs the backbone
of leadership to provide guidance and training to increase the sales by meeting customer needs.

coordinate the activities of other department and helps in achieving efficiency.

Steve jobs is an idol example of leadership which act as a backbone in making the company
reach to heights. With his proper knowledge and guidance he guided the employees to work and
helped in communicating clear vision to all its employees which made apple reaching top of the
heights and making employees motivated working there. By, his attributes and passion towards the
work. It helps in properly coordinating of work and achieving of goals.

There is both relation and difference between leadership and management that helps to
contribute in development in organisational as well as employees.

organisation. They both work to influence work and environment structure of organisation that

missions is also similar. The other similarity is that main concern is allocate available resources that
work in effective and efficient way (Nahavand and et. al., 2013). The leadership skills work on to
influence the behaviour and deeds of employees so that they work on to achieve business goals and
objectives. Leadership is essential part in organisation as same as management in organisation to
achieve business mission in correct manner. Management focus on primarily on administering
functions of business leaders and leadership is process to influence behaviour of leader and team
members to achieve goals and objectives in organisation so that they behave in equitable manner.
Skills of Management Good Communication :- For the management good communication skills is one of
important skill. A good manager must be master in all form of communication such as
written, verbal and listening skills. For the effective management it is important for manager
of T K Maxx to have ability or skills to communicate with variety of people like from entry
level employees to department head and CEO (O'Boyle Forsyth and O'Boyle2011).
Team Building:- In an organization management must have skills to keep their team intact.
For effective Management must have skills to build and manage their team in effective and
efficient manner by involving whole team in decision making, ask for advice with team,
discuss ideas with team, motivate team etc. T K Maxx management have skills of team
building, they motivate and maintain team in effective ways by listening them, discuss ideas
with employees, involve in decision making etc. (Fisher and To, 2012).
Skills of Leadership Delegation:- In an organization it is the skills of leadership to do delegation of work
according to ability and skills of employees. There are some skills which is required of good
delegation of work are- accept feedback from employees, allot resource to employees,
evaluate employees performance, identify measurable outcome, match task to right
employees, time management etc. T K Maxx leadership have skills through which they
identify skills of each staff and assign duties to hem according to their skills and ability.
Creative:- In some situation a effective leader have to take number of decision that did not
have a clear answer at that time they have to think outside of box (Judge and Kammeyer‐
Mueller, 2012). T K Maxx leaders have leadership skills to think creatively and innovative
way to solve problems of employees and to take decision. They have other skills like
analytical, foresight, innovation, open minded and so on.
Qualities of leadership
Honesty and integrity- Leader should be honest in communicating its vision to all its
followers and should provide guidance in achieving those vision and makes them to work

Flexibility- Manager should be flexible in carrying and adopting all its management
approaches which fits differently according to situation at TK Maxx which helps in
managing business operations effectively.
CONCLUSION
From the above report it has been concluded that leadership and management plays a
important role in managing the business operations. Management plays a important role in fulfil its
basic responsibilities of planning, organising , directing , controlling and staffing of employees to
execute the task effectively. On the other hand leadership is crucial and act as backbone in
company's success by providing guidance, training and coaching of its followers to execute the task
effectively and achieve organisational goals.
