Introduction
In this assignment, the researcher has chosen to study about recruiting and selection of staff
members. Here in this assignment, the researcher has researched as an HR manager of The
Purple Mail Company. The company is a UK based company. Along with this in this
assignment, the researcher has discussed the skills of leaders that help the leader to work with
various employees. The differences between leadership and management are discussed in this
assignment. The impact of teamwork in an organisation has elaborated in the assignment.
Therefore, it can be said that this assignment helps to understand the whole secret of success of
an organisation.
LO1
1.1 Preparing documentation to select and recruit a new member of staff
The Purple Mail Company recruits many employees in their organisation. Therefore, as the HR
manager of the company, the manager has to adopt some processes to select the staffs for the
organisation. The staffs help an organisation to improve their business or to gain profit. The
recruitment process of The Purple Mail Company includes:
Approval of recruitment: In this, the process first the organisation makes a document about the
needed employees. Therefore, it can be said that in that document the organisation chooses the
posts of the needed employees or staffs (Rodríguez-Carvajal et al. 2014, p.63). For those
positions, the required skills are also mentioned in that document. After making the document,
PMC sends that to their HR manager for the recruitment process.
Position description: After getting the document, the HR managers, and the HR team analysed
the document very carefully to understand the positions. After understanding HR teams describe
the positions well. The described positions can be given to the people for searching new staffs.
Mendenhall and Osland, (2012, p.90) stated that in the process of the position description, the
organisation describes each thing regarding the job clearly as timings, salaries, positions, place,
duties etc.
Advertising: This process is very important process regarding recruitment. The HR team of the
organisation gives advertise of the document. With the help of job advertising, the company
provides the news about the required position. There are different types of advertising such as
3

online advertising, electronic media, print media etc. the advertising can be given about the job
position, facilities, required skills, vacancies, salaries etc. Along with this, the HR team of The
Purple Mail Company needs to maintain the advertising rules.
1.2 Assessing the impact of legal, regulatory and ethical considerations to the
recruitment and selection process
There are some impacts of legal, regulatory and ethical considerations on the recruitment
process. The HR manager of PMC has to maintain the rules and regulations during the time of
selection process. The HR manager and HR team have to be aware of the rules and regulations of
the law. The legal awareness can help the manager to select the members carefully. There are
various kinds of selection law that has to be maintained by an organisation. The impacts of laws
are:
Sex discrimination act: With the help of this act the recruitment process must be same for the all
individual whether it male or female (Lev, 2013, p.44). Therefore, it can be said that PMC has to
recruit their employees without differentiating them regarding their sex.
Race relation act: In this act, the company cannot cut any person from their recruiting list for
their race or nationality. PMC has a great impact of this act, as the company should select all
kinds of persons as their staff. That can help the organisation to get a good employee.
Equity of regulation: In this act, all members can get the same benefits from the organisation.
The person can be old or young that does not matter for getting the job. Therefore, PMC has to
maintain the rule.
The law in advertising stage: As it has discussed earlier the HR manager or the HR team give
advertisement for their selection process. In that advertisement, the manager or the team must
give all details about the job and position. The company cannot give any wrong information.
Apart from this, the HR team must give all the details about their will not any differences
regarding sex, age, nationality etc.
According to Kelly and Clark (2014, p.51), there are other three laws as law in interview stage,
the right of employment and statement of employment. These regulations also have a great
impact on the selection process as a positive result.

1.3 Taking part in the selection process
After giving advertisement about the recruitment or selection the HR manager or HR team has to
take few steps. The next steps can be considered as a selection process. In PMC, the HR manager
of the company has adopted few steps for their selection process. The steps can be identified as:
Selection of recruitment and selection panels: In this panel, the company selects some persons
for interview or appointment (Marino et al. 2016, p.17). Therefore, the company selects the
persons as their skills for their needed employees for selected positions.
Short listing: In the next part, the company short-list the persons from the applications. PMC has
various short listing processes to select right persons. The processes can be IQ tests, written
exams, MCQ exams etc. after this process the company short list right people. The name of the
shortlisted people can be given to the HR manager or HR team. The HR team arranges
interviews of those shortlisted persons.
Interviews: Carter (2015, p.33) stated that in this process, the HR manager takes interviews to
the selected people. The manager asks some questions about their personal life, background,
interests, education, experience, skills etc. therefore it can be said that the HR manager of PMC
also asks same questions to understand the person better.
1.4 Evaluating own contribution to the selection process
In this assignment, there are huge descriptions about preparing a document about the selection
and recruitment process of PMC. I help the company improve the document; by improving the
document, the process can also be improved. The improved selection or recruitment process can
help the company to get better employees or staffs. The employees can be helpful for PMC to
earn a profit. Along with this, I give ideas to give advertisement for recruitment. Various
advertisement ideas can help the company to provide the whole detail about the positions of jobs
and their criteria. Advertisement can help people to get the idea about PMC and they can find the
way to take the opportunity of getting the job. I help the company in selecting panel also. As it
has described earlier with the help of selection PMC can select new staffs or employees. I also
take a part to short listing applications. The right short listing process is very important for every
selection process because the shortlisted people come to give an interview. I play an important
role in taking interviews also. The right questions can be helpful to understand the people and
their skills well. Understanding of a right person may give PMC an excellent employee.

Therefore, it can be said that I have taken a part of the whole selection and recruitment process
of PMC.

2.1 Explaining the skills and attributes needed for leadership
According to Cook (2016, p.90), leaders are the most important part of every company. Leaders
help the company to gain profit. A good leader always helps the other team members to work
efficiently. Therefore, it can be said that to be a good leader the leader needs some skills to
maintain the team properly. The skills can be considered as:
The leaders need to have a friendly behaviour with team members. This behaviour can help the
leader to solve and understand main problems.
A leader should always have positive nature. Positive nature can help other members to get
positive in a tough situation.
A good leader must know the solution of every problem (Mowday et al. 2013, p.90). They leader
need to have proper knowledge about their job.
Along with this, the leader must have the managerial ability. The managerial ability helps the
leader to manage each situation very efficiently.
The leader also can have some special traits in their nature to impress people. As the leader, get
success to impress people then it can be said that leader can impress team members also.
Impressing the team members can be helpful for the leader to keep them well maintained and to
get their work better.
Rummler and Brache (2012, p.123) stated that leaders can have the leadership in their nature, as
the leader has a job to leader the team members well. Therefore, it can be said that when a leader
does not have the leadership nature it can be tough for the leader to give orders to the team
members. As if any member does not obey the leader then the leader should have the nature to
punish that particular team member.
2.2 Explaining the difference between leadership and management
The definition of leaderships is that the main purpose of leader to make an inspiring vision for
the future and the make motivate the people who are engaged with the organisation (Appelbaum,
2013, p.120). The definition of managers is that a manager is always the most responsible person
6
Document Page
for supervising and motivating the employees. According to Lev (2013, p.44), leadership and
management both is not the same thing but they can go hand in hand and is also linked with each
other. They have to work together for an organisation. There are many differences between
leadership, managers such as the managers are the administrators, and the leaders are always
innovative. The leader is always original but manages always copies the planned things properly.
Leader mainly develops an organisation but manager manages all. According to Murdoch and
Geys (2014, p. 1793), leader mainly focuses on the people but the managers mainly focused on
various systems and structures. The leaders always inspire trust but in other hand, managers
mainly rely on control. The manager mainly focuses on main bottom line but the leader mainly
focuses on the horizon. The manager has always short-range perspective but the leader has
always a long-range view. The manager mainly questions on how and why but the leader mainly
ask why and what. The manager always imitates but the leader always originates. Guilding
(2014, p.231) observed that the manager always accepts the status quo but the leader always
makes a challenge. The manager always makes the right thing but the leader always does the
right thing. The managers are always the good soldiers for an organisation but the leaders are
always their own person.
2.3 Comparing leadership styles for different situations
There are many different leadership styles for different situations. They are like autocratic
leaders, democratic leaders and laissez-faire (Cummings and Worley, 2014, p.89). In the case of
autocratic leaders, they can take decisions even without any consent of others and they may have
some useful input but instead of that, they can take decision individually. It is very important to
be appropriate during the decision taking time when for any successful outcome no need to take
the agreement of the team or there is no need to take the team input. This kind of style can be
demoralising and may be the result of employee turnover. This kind of style may lead to high
chances of absenteeism. In the case of democratic leaders, they always make the final decisions.
However, they always include the team members for making the decisions. Ulrich et al. (2013,
p.78) stated that they always encourage the creativity, the result is that job satisfaction, and
productivity will be high though this style may not always effect for taking quick decisions. Next
are laissez-faire leaders they always give enough freedom to the employees to put their best work
and setting of deadlines (Kelly and Clark, 2014, p.51). They mainly do not get involved but they

provide necessary support if required. This style helps to make more job satisfaction for an
organisation. However, it can make damage if the team members do not have proper knowledge
and information or if they are not well trained. In the case of Purple Mail Company, they need to
employ the autocratic leadership style to take decisions without any consent of others.
2.4 Explaining ways to motivate staff to achieve objectives
There are various types of motivation theory to achieve the objectives. They are as follows, the
goal will always be smart, specific, realistic, achievable, and time bound. The goal will always
be realistic for the employees to motivate them in every possible way. Most importantly, the goal
will be achievable. The goal must be specific that the employees can understand easily. They
need to ask the employees that where they have their expertise so that they can put their best
effort for an organisation (Rummler and Brache, 2012, p.123). Complementation is always
helpful for motivating the employees. After every successful task, completion needs to give
complementation for employees so that they become more enthusiastic about their upcoming job.
They need to treat every employee equally so that not all the employees can feel any kind of
inferiority. Individual recognition is another important aspect for employee motivation so that
they can see themselves with proper recognition. After their accomplishment, they need to
provide positive recognition. Need to provide a various bonus, rewards to make them motivated
to reach the objectives of an organisation. Different types of reward can help the employees to
make their performance better continuously (Cook, 2016, p.90). Praising all the employees is
essential for motivating the employees. All these strategies will help to make all the employees
of an organisation motivate for achieving the objectives.
LO3
3.1 Assessing the benefits of team working for an organisation
It is very important the benefits of teamwork for The Purple Mail Company. Teamwork always
plays the crucial role in making successful of any organisation and its long-term running. There
are the various positive side of teamwork as if all the employees will be well motivated to
achieve the target objectives of an organisation. Any kind of confusion can be resolved when
teamwork play the entire role of the task. Most importantly, the employees can be very aware of
their effort that they are putting for the betterment of an organisation. Teamwork can solve any

problems easily. In the case of any long task can be divided with the employees so the
difficulties of the task will be divided so that any individual may not face that hurdle. Teamwork
can help to increase the confidence level of the employees. Positive energy is always the main

issue or difficulty with proper way, so that the organisation meets the goal and objectives

their comments, I will resolve the problem with positive perspective. In the case of any kind of
communication barriers among the employees or between the employees and the customers, I
will first identify the barriers and based on that problem I will definitely employ some effective
communication-training program for effective communication skills for verbal communication
and nonverbal communication. I will also recommend to all the employees to listen to all the
customers with patience and behave with them with utmost care because I believe that customer
satisfaction always plays a crucial role the success of an organisation. Then in the case of new
employees, if they are unable to identify their roles for the Purple Mail Company then as a leader
