AI Summary
I attached week two file ( lab journal 2) and the teacher feedback( was written by me) and one examples file is from teacher as example named by examples-weekly journal entry, please for section 3b you have many choices (from guideline you can see that) to write this section, try to write different way than mine in week2. The task target is about 700-900 words, and there is no reference it's like a story, if you want to lie it's up to you, teacher doesn't know what I’m doing and she even does not visit me in the hospital she only wants to read what I am learned and how the theory and practical knowledge that I learned in the uni is helpful during placement in hospital with mention of diseases etc.

Information for what I have done in the previous week that I should talk aboutit:
3a
I was posted in specimens collection section, received samples from section was by
TranspoNet Pneumatic Tube System ( Lamson). This was a new technology which is not
present in our university. This technology works on the principle of air compression and
vacuum where blood specimens are propelled into cylindrical shaped vacuum tubes using
partially compressed air to various areas within the hospital. Inter data was computerized
and the data was directly transfer to sections. The samples needed to be handled to the
transported sections through specimen staffs.
I had to be vigilant about the safety issues relevant to specimen reception. These included
risks associated with biohazards where if the specimens are mishandled, they can cause
infection to those handling the same. Additionally, if blood specimens are not filled using
correct or hygienic methods, it can result in contamination and incorrect diagnosis.
My additional duties included, sorting specimens, use of lab numbers and stickers for each of
department which was not new to me since I performed the same in previous hospital work
experience.
Other new experiences included identification of unsuitable specimens and the procedure to
be used in case of wrongly labeled or missing or incorrect specimens. We learned the
importance of such correct sampling in the university as well as the fact that color coding the
specimen bottles are often useful in preventing such errors.
I learned how to deal with urgent samples such as blood bank samples and need for blood units.
Blood banks samples must be handled urgently since they are required in case of emergency and
life-threatening situations like accidents where patients can die due to blood loss. Blood units
are also required for cancer care since surgeries or bone marrow treatments can result in blood
loss. We had learned in the university that blood collected for transfusion must be screened
using certain tests to ensure that safe blood samples are transfused to the patient. I witnessed
the same practical application in the hematology unit of the hospital I am working in, where the
blood units were screened for Hepatitis B and C, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases like
syphilis.

There is a guide line and one example, read they and try to write anything even if you need to
imagine any incident Critical Incident Analysis imagine but need to be related to the specimen
collection section.
Identification of the Experience
My experience in the specimens collection section which prompted me to reflect upon is associated
with the adaption of a new technology and new principle. One of the most striking and memorable
experiences which I encountered in the specimens collection section is my first encounter with
transparent pneumatic tube systems or Lamson tubes for the transportation of samples collected in
the histopathology lab. Such a system of material transportation works on the principle of air
compression and vacuum. This was an entirely new experience since in our university, specimens
obtained from the practical lab had to be collected and taken manually to the required workstations.
Hence, engaging myself for the first time in such a technology was not only exciting for me but also
instilled in me, feelings of fear, doubt and nervousness, especially during specimen receiving and
collection. This is because I was required to simply receive specimen samples from the laboratory or
send the same to the hospital via this system and also correctly label and separate specimens to be
used for specific sections in the laboratory. I was nervous because if I performed this task

incorrectly, samples may be misplaced in the wrong departments resulting in misdiagnosis or
miscommunication to the patient.
Description of the Experience/Incidence
I was required to receive the required samples from the lab’s pneumatic tube system as well as add
samples to the system to be transported to different sections of the laboratory. For collecting
samples, I had to ensure that each tube was handled with precaution since mishandling can lead to
damage, leakage of contents, contact with the skins or sensitive areas like eyes and biohazard risk
for infection.. Further, prior to adding specimens in the system, I had to use correct stickers and lab
numbers so that they can be easily sorted and used by the lab staff located in various departments.
It was here that I felt nervous since my supervisors informed me that is specimens are not labeled
correctly, it will result in the analysis of a wrong blood sample different from the patient’s and
hence, lead to wrong results, wrong diagnosis and a major threat to the life and health of the
patient. Another key activity which I learned and implemented is quick and urgent collection of
samples from the blood ban in case of emergencies the blood tests which are to be conducted by
the blood bank from where such samples are to be collected.
Analyzing the Experience
I was equally nervous and excited regarding my first experience with collecting and receiving
specimens from the pneumatic tube technology. This was because incorrect labelling of specimens
may result in incorrect diagnosis and wrong health information given to the patient. However, I
communicated this concern to my supervisors who assured me of their help and took the time to
teach me on the same and allow me to practice. Further, they also monitored me during the
specimen labeling so that I gain confidence. Hence, this experience taught me that it is normal to
doubt oneself during a new experience, communicating and asking for supervision from seniors is
always helpful in gaining new knowledge and confidence. Additionally, the responsibility to collect
correctly label specimens was not new for me, as I had already performed the same in the previous
hospital where I worked in. In the university, I learned theoretically that color coding specimen
containers is a useful technique to prevent any incorrect sampling and it was interesting to find the
same in the specimens collection section. I was also advised by my supervisor and taught in the
university that segregating specimen labels in separate cabinets or allocating separate sections of
the laboratory for keeping specific groups of specimens is a beneficial technique for preventing
errors. Thus, along with my supervisor’s help, recollecting my theoretical knowledge also helped me
gain confidence in this responsibility. The urgent responsibility of collecting blood units from the
blood bank was another overwhelming experience for me since blood samples are required during
times of emergency and even a slight delay in my duties can result in loss of patient life.
Evaluation of the Experience
From now on, for every new learning, I must communicate and take supervision from my supervisors
to ensure safety as well as optimum learning. During my future practice, I must also ensure that I
handle biological specimens carefully using correct labeling procedures to ensure that patients
receive care and diagnostic results which are correct, safe and hygienic.
Learning for this Week
Taking insights from the above experience, I learned that in the future, not only must ensure that I
maintain hygiene and sterilized specimen handling and correct specimen labeling and identification
to prevent biohazards or misdiagnosis, I must also ensure to adhere to patient needs without delay,
especially in case of emergencies.
Conclusion
Document Page
To conclude, learning for this week in the specimens collection section provided me new and
practical insights on hygiene to be maintained during specimen collection, the importance of blood
screening tests and the need to use technology to reduce laboratory turnaround times and provide
quick, quality care to patients.
