Development of Sustainable Zero Energy Home 1AbstractA zero-energy structure is a structure with significantly reduced energy demands by use of efficiency methods, which leads to equilibrium between energy needed by the building and the renewable energy produced by the building. This energy requires that sum of embodied energy of construction, operational energy, maintenance energy, and energy related to disposals should be less or equal to the renewable energy produced Embodied energy used from the beginning of construction until the end of the construction process. To achieve this sustainable design, everything to be used from materials, human resources, and site should be considered.IntroductionOne of the greatest challenges facing the world today is climate change and globalwarming The major consumer of energy and contributor of greenhouse gases in Australia are residentialhouses. Its therefore important that detailed and accurate taking, measuring, recording andanalyzing of energy consumption is used as a basis for the development of sustainable zeroenergy homes [ CITATION Sar14 \l 1033 ].Approximately, 42% of the main energy produced is used in built environment, thisexplains the impact of built environment to the environment, and the rate is increasing simplybecause the newer structures are built and at a faster rate than the rate at which the old ones arevacated [ CITATION Rez12 \l 1033 ].

Development of Sustainable Zero Energy Home 1This report tries to discuss low-carbon design in five aspects namely, selection ofmaterials that have low carbon content, sustainable design and construction process, management of energy of operative and consumption behavior, choice of biodegradable energysystems and recycling and reusing of materials and how they lead to achieving the goal of zeroenergy home. Fundamental concept for design and construction of a sustainable zero carbon homeincludes;Picking a friendly site that will allow one to put up renewable energy systems with less orno difficulties Strategizing efficient methods of producing renewable energy from the beginning of thedesign.Use of less water especially hot water.Use of materials with less embodied energy, only use otherwise when left with no option.Make the best use of docile design program.(Jodie Pipkorn 2013)In order to successfully reduce carbon emission a number of factors need to be put in place suchas;Reduce on lifestyle emission Cut down on built up area Reduce number of appliances that consume too much electricity Go for on-site renewable energy

Development of Sustainable Zero Energy Home 1Selection of low carbon construction materialsBuilding as an envelope comprises of complex combinations of different processed materials that sum up the total of the building’s embodied energy[ CITATION Den14 \l 1033]. Embodied materials used in construction of an average house contains 1000 GJ of energy, this is according to research carried out by CSIRO this energy is equal to about 10 years of normal operational energy use. For a house with lifespan of 40 years, this is more than 12% of energy
