CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Overview (Topic discussion):-
The definition of female beauty is different according to people that live in different
culture or society and at different geographical area. The world judges a women by expecting
them to act or look in a certain way which is good from their perception. There are number of art
or methods used by the society from ancient times for enhancing the beauty and redefining them
in a totally new way so that they could help in looking good and also could attract others
(Jeffreys, 2014). There are number of assumptions which society have and influenced women to
adopt for the same to look beautiful. In ancient time women adopt various ways to improve their
beauty, for instance some women wear dozens of tight neck rings for lengthy neck. Another
example can be taken of Persian women whose head was always wrapped with some complex
braid with various accessories in order to look attractive and beautiful. These all are some
example of ways which were by women in ancient times for looking beautiful. But with the
passing of time and advancement of technology several new instruments, tools and techniques
have been developed to support females to get the desired beauty which they want. This includes
make-up items, jewellery, cosmetics and plastic surgery that has been used by women from past
years for increasing their beauty.
There are number of artist who defines the art of female beauty by creating paintings,
portraits, sculptures etc. These artistic works define about the beauty which attract women to opt
for the options like cosmetic and plastic surgery as an option to improve their outer beauty. But
the perception of beauty keeps on changing and hence it is often unattainable (Adams, 2012).
The words like perfect, flawless and unrealistic beauty, emphasize an idea that society influence
women to have a desire to get an ideal appearance, but this is almost impossible to achieve the
image they have in their mind. Still, cosmetics and plastic surgery allows women to fulfil their
want up-to some extent by modifying their beauty as per their desire.
Cosmetic and plastic surgery: -
The cosmetic surgery is defined as any medical operations which is generally intended to
enhance the appearance of person rather than their health. The procedures, principles and
techniques of cosmetic surgery generally focuses over improving the aesthetic appeal,

proportions and symmetry issues of body. However, there are also chances that these procedures
may fail or impact negatively on the health of the individual. It can be performed in all area of
neck, body and head as it is elective in nature that is it is chosen by patient to improve their
appearance. Young Female have more desire to get a flawless skin without any spots, dullness
and discolouration. So for getting this woman generally go for the cosmetic surgery treatment
which help them in improving their body factors and removing the unattractive marks like
birthmark or moles to provide them a flawless skin (Bordo, 2016). Apart from this old age
woman use cosmetic surgeries to feel younger by minimizing the wrinkles, fine lines etc. which
make them look older and unattractive. In addition to this cosmetic surgery is more common
among models as they keep on improving themselves through such treatment to remain the face
of industry. Apart from this, plastic surgery is also being used by models to enhance their beauty
by reshaping their body parts such as nose, checks, lips etc. to look attractive. They keep on
improving their facial feature to remain attractive and beautiful. Some of commonly known
cosmetic surgeries are laser hair removal, removal of racial and ethnic lines, eyelid surgery, hair
transplantation etc.
On the other hand, plastic surgery refers to the treatment given by doctors or surgeons to
reconstruct the body or facial defect which a patient has due to birth disorder, burn, disease,
accident and trauma. It generally focuses over correcting the dysfunctional area of body. Hence,
plastic surgery is generally adopted by females to improve their body part to look more beautiful
and attractive. There are number of surgeries that are being adopted by woman for making
improvement in their body looks (Brennan, 2012). Some of them are tummy tuck, reshaping of
nose & lips, cheeks enhancement, face lifting, eyelid lift etc. The tummy tuck is most common in
women who are suffering from obesity and wish to look slim. This treatment supports them in
fulfilling their desire by removing excess fat from their body through surgical operation.

Research questions: -
Explain the concept of Art of Female beauty?
What is the role of society on female beauty?
How cosmetic and plastic surgery influence the art of female beauty?
History
People always remain concern about their outer look or appearance since the beginning
of civilisation and in order to offer them a better look, ancient doctors took efforts to find new
methods of aesthetic surgeries (Braun, 2016). At that time piercing, tattooing and scarification
were quite popular that women use in ancient times in order to look more attractive. For this
people generally used specialised techniques for changing their look such as ripping, snipping,
stitching and injection for making their body part to look smooth and beautiful. During 16th
century, a surgeon named Gaspare Tagliacozzi has first performed nose grafting by taking a skin
flap from upper arm and then this surgeon has named as father of plastic surgery (The Father of
Plastic Surgeons, 2019). With the passing of time, the techniques of plastic and cosmetic surgery
get more precise and refined. After the introduction of anaesthesia and antiseptics, plastic as well
as cosmetic surgery become safer and easier.
By introducing different techniques and medicines, western society has started seeing a
considerable demand and growth in cosmetic surgery. American also started performing
surgeries to improve the outer look of their patients by performing some physical deformities due
to industrial or auto-mobile accidents (Chaipraditkul, 2013). Many new techniques have been
formulated and then surgeon started performing face lift, removing the accidental scars,
improving the shape of body parts and many more that has also contributed in increasing the ue
of surgeries. Now a day these surgeries become more demanding among women which generally
pursue them to improve themselves to look beautiful.
CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW
Literature review is defined as a scholarly paper which contains a description about
substitute finding that are being researched and studied by several authors earlier and then
present their knowledge regarding similar topic. These findings support researchers to support
their research and critically evaluate about the topic they are currently working on so that proper
outcome can be achieved.

The concept of Art of Female beauty: -
As per the view point of Arnot Nick (2018), beauty standard among females has been
changed overtime. The artwork from ancient time can be consider as a true statement of style and
culture followed by women to enhance their beauty. These ancient arts work like sculpture,
paintings, pop arts, ancient books etc. defined about the beauty of women. These all affect the
mentality of people and way to define beauty. By going through these sources, women make up
their own perception regarding the way how people prefer them to look like. Women generally
take these sources as an inspiration to enhance their beauty as they started viewing these
definitions or art as a standard of beauty which they required to involve in the life to look pretty.
These all frame up the way females as well as society consider the beauty of female as these arts
provide an picture about the way beauty has been defined in past by the their cultural re-
presenters and then it became trend of their followers.
On the other hand, as per the view point of Svoboda, 2013, female always remains more
attracted toward enhancing their beauty even from the ancient time and in order to look beautiful
women use to perform some art as per their norms of culture to which they belong. This art
includes getting tattoo over their body to look attractive, use of kohl to highlight their eyes, head
covered with braided hairs, attractive accessories of several metals, use of different sort of
fabrics and unique clothing styles etc. are some of them. These all are being used by women in
several different ways to look attractive and beautiful.
But according to Taylor, 2012, there are number of arts and techniques that are being
used by females even from the past centuries in order to enhance their beauty by improving the
texture and complexion of their skin. In ancient time people make some medicines or beauty
products by using herbs in order to treat the various skin and body related problems. These herb,
medicines and natural product help women to look pretty and enhance their beauty. This was the
greatest art of that time where people use to mix up several herbs together in order to healing
several skin issues and provide female with their dream beauty by improving their several issues.
These methods keep on improving and modifying as time passes. In current times, women use
cosmetic products to enhance their beauty and look prettier. Apart from this with the
development of technologies, now a day’s people started providing medical treatment to enhance
the beauty by providing treatment to their several body or skin related issues. These treatments
involve plastic and cosmetic surgery for providing the bodily disorders like scars, accidental

wound, improving shape of body parts, uplifting lips etc. These sort of treatments are very much
popular in present and females follow these arts and techniques for enhancing their beauty.
The role of society on female beauty: -
As per the view point of Loeto, 2014 the body of female is a culture artefact which
defined and redefined over time for responding to broad culture as well as historical
transformation. The norm and view of society influence a lot the fact that how we view ourselves
and how we think that other peoples think of us as per our look or appearance. These views
influence up-to a large extend about the concept of beauty that women have in their mind which
in turn also affect the way they live. Society even start projecting socially constructed gender
expectations over children before they started breathing. This can be evident through the colours
that are being used to decorate the nurseries. They separate the choices by defining some colour
codes, pierced ears, clothing designs and head bands which then become their identity when they
grow up society.
According to Vannini, 2016, body image defines from the personal construction and
public projection of our body as well as body part in order to attempt the conformity with
standard of beauty which is established by socio-cultural factors. It generally involves
imaginations, physical sensations about bodies and emotions which are perceived through the
society in which people live or to culture with which they belong and social interactions. These
beauty standards which are fixed by the cultural trend and society affected the way females view
beauty and the way they live in this society. These trends may involve particular dress code that
women should wear to represent their culture, sort of jewellery they carry and the hairstyle they
women have or prefers in order to look beautiful along with maintain the standards depicted by
society. So in order to achieve these beauty standard women started opting for the options such
as cosmetics and other treatments to improve their look. These treatments may include cosmetic
surgery to improve their skins and other bodily part such as scars, accidental wound, uplifting
their facial features, changing their colour complexion, improving their hairs and so on. Apart
from this female also opt for an option of plastic surgery to enhance their beauty or improving
their body part shapes such as shaping up nose, Jaw reduction, tissue expansion, forehead lift,
face lift, tummy tuck etc.
As per the view point of Mitter, P., 2013, society affects the way beauty has been defined
and consider by people. As society creates certain expectations and set high standards for

women's beauty and the way they live. When they are unable to deal up with such standards than
females started losing their confidence in themselves which also lead to some mental issues such
as depression or anxiety. Women in society are being taught from the beginning to compare
themselves for most of their lives. There always remains a sign among people which flashing
over some new ways or methods that women have to try in order to look prettier. No matter how
much they are self-confident or motivated, it become impossible for girls to ignore what society
defines about the beauty. These standards have been defining by several people from the society
and culture which get changes with the time passes. Like in ancient time people depict that girl
with great hairs, full of jewellery, curvy body etc. looks beautiful. But in modern time people
define it in a way that girls should talk and walk pretty, must have perfect skin, apply make-up,
must concern about their weight and always try to wear trendy clothes.
Influence of cosmetic and plastic surgery on art of female beauty: -
As per the view point of Alicia and Christina (2017), from last few decades a large
amount of money has been spend by women mostly on expensive cosmetic surgery procedures
for an attempt to look prettier or more attractive. Despite of this fact that these treatments may
cost higher and changes the existing features of body, cosmetic surgery has now become a
worldwide phenomenon. Therefore, it can be said that plastic as well as cosmetic surgery has a
great influence over the female beauty. Because women are getting more attracted toward the
face and look of actress and their role models at movies and try to look alike them. For this they
generally approach the surgeons to get the similar look or feature that their favourite celebrities
and what other people in society consider it. The women who undergoes such surgery report that
they feel higher self-esteem and confident after surgery.
According to view point of Luo, 2013 plastic and cosmetic surgery has been invented to
benefit the people with a treatment which support them to improve their external health issues or
transplantation of different body parts. But from the several years it has been used as an art to
enhance the female beauty. This trend has been started from the females those are working in a
profession like model or actress but now it also getting more demanded among working women.
As they are also become more attracted toward the transformational result it provides to them.
Therefore, it has said that plastic as well as cosmetic surgery also influence the art of female
beauty by introducing several new techniques or methods to enhance the features or skin of girls
and help them to look beautiful. This may include removal of skin discolouration, birth marks
6

and scars from accidents, reshaping up their body parts, hair transplantation and many more.
These all treatment work better to enhance the beauty of female by fulfilling their expectation
toward them. This also help them in boosting up their confidence within the society up to great
extent. Plastic and cosmetic surgery great work or providing a benefit to women in enhancing
their beauty in term of their own standards.
But as per the view point of Little, J., 2013, standard of beauty has been fixed by society
which influence the way people look over the concept of beauty and the way women think to
improve their living standard. The expectation of looking beautify is a never ending desires
which changes with the fulfilment of one's need. In order to satisfy this desire, the trend of
getting plastic and cosmetic surgery done is increasing day by day as people becoming more
curious toward trying this treatment to enhance their beauty. But despite of all these benefits
these treatments also sometimes bring up disaster due to failure in surgery or side effects which
somewhat creates a new health issues to the patient. These side effects may include pain,
scarring, bleeding etc., sometimes medicines may perform allergic reaction which may worsen
the situation and this in turn also lead to failure in operation. For instance, most of the women
opt from such surgery in order suction fat from their thighs and lower abdomen which may
destroy the fat cells. This may affect their body when they regain fat as at that time fat will
distributed unevenly often to less flattering area like upper abdomen, back and arms.
Pros and Cons:
According to Edmonds, 2013, The cosmetic and plastic surgery is most trending and
common among women to enhance their beauty which provide them a chance to achieve their
desired beauty and make them feel happy as well as confident. Following are the pros of plastic
and cosmetic surgery:
Cosmetic surgery: It offers a wide range of options, yet precise spectrum of change which
provide an instant recognizable result without any major bodily operation as compare to other
surgeries. It supports a person in improving their appearance and also benefit them at a
superficial level.
Plastic surgery: Women can undergo with nose surgery which help in altering the shape of nose
and also support in getting rid of nasal problem which facilitate better breathings. Plastic surgery
like tummy tuck will support over weighted women to get free from excess weight to reshape
7
Document Page
their body which in turn will also support in reducing the obesity related disease like pressure
over joints and pain etc.
Apart from all these benefits, plastic and cosmetic surgery have several consequences
also and these can be better understood using following points:
Cosmetic surgery: - The cost of getting cosmetic surgery is relatively higher. Main disadvantage
of this surgery is that it takes to get fully treated or in recovering from this operation and for this
patient has to take time off for these treatment.
Plastic surgery: - Like other surgeries tummy tuck, facelift, nose surgery etc. all come up with
some side effect such as pain, scarring, anaesthesia reactions, bleeding etc. There is always a risk
of complication in plastic surgery such as muscles and tissue damage, infection etc.
Hence from the above discussion it can be consider that plastic as well as cosmetic
surgery has a great influence over female beauty as it involves set of techniques which support
them to enhance their beauty. But despite of this factor these surgeries have more side effect or
negative impact over the people and their health. Apart from this, these surgeries also change the
existing features that women have before surgery. So, surgeries are good only for the case when
they are required to do in order to improve certain health issues and not to re-featuring the
existing facial features or body parts.

CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Methodology refers to certain techniques and procedures that help in
identifying, selecting, processing and analysing information on a certain topic. It is one of the
most crucial parts of a research and is concerned towards critical evaluation of the validity and
reliability of the study (Dingman and et. al., 2012). There are various aspects that are required to
be considered in this section that are described below:
Type of Investigation: There are two types of investigations that are used in a research
namely, qualitative and quantitative research. In qualitative, the data and information used are on
qualitative terms, i.e. theories and concepts, plus information used cannot be measured in
numerical terms. Whereas, in terms of quantitative data, the information used are in numerical
terms and are used to represent statistical data that could be quantifiable and measured
effectively. For this research, qualitative investigation is used.
Research Design: It is a blue print of the research topic that comprises of a set of
methods and techniques chosen by a researcher to combine the various components of the
research in a manner that the whole will be covered. So, it gives the path to research to be
conducted in an effective manner. Research Design are of three types, i.e., Descriptive,
Exploratory, and Experimental. Every type of research is used for a different purpose as the
descriptive and exploratory is used in case when the research is conducted on qualitative basis.
And Experimental is used when the data is used quantitative. The researcher may use it
according to the need of the topic provided for research. For this research, descriptive research
design is used to aid the purpose.
Research Philosophy: This refers to the belief that the information regarding the
research topic is effectively collected, analysed, evaluated and used. Under this, indication of
investigator's view of about the whole study is outshone. There are two major philosophies of
research; interpretivism and positivism. Positivism research effectively provide validity to
overall research and support investigation by providing statistical information. On the other
hand, interpretivism give various different options which effectively help researcher to maintain
differentiation. For this research, interpretivism philosophy is used.
Research Approach: For conducting a research, various plans and procedures are to be
accomplished and contains of detailed method of data collection, analysis and interpretation.
Therefore, while using an appropriate research it is important that researcher go through with all
10
Document Page
the approaches that are available to them so that best amongst them can be adopted. The
Research approaches are also classified into two types, i.e., inductive and deductive. Both these
type of approaches have their own uses. As the first which is Inductive is used in case of
Qualitative Research and Deductive Approach is used in case of Quantitative Research.
Data Collection Tools: It is considered as one of the most crucial steps of any kind of
research. The motive of the researcher to collect data is to effectively develop a better
understanding of the research topic. In addition to this, the data collection helps in coming to an
effective solution about the research (Edmonds, 2013). There are two ways through which the
researcher could collect the data. One way of data collection is primary method. This method
concerns with collecting first-hand information about the research topic through questionnaires,
observations, etc. The other type is secondary method where researcher effectively analyse
certain secondary resources like journals, books, newspapers and so forth to collect information.
Data Sampling: Data Sampling refers to the collection of primary source of data from a
wide population for conducting taking the opinions of people. They are also of two types which
are Probabilistic and Non-Probabilistic. For this research, the researcher has used probabilistic
sampling as it will help them in getting a better result. For getting an effective result the
researcher has taken sample size of around 50 respondents.
Data Analysis: This step is the most crucial step of research report where the information
collected is briefly analysed to fulfil the research purpose. For this research, thematic analysis is
used to effectively analyse the data collected by the researcher.
Ethical Consideration: This undertakes the issues faced by the researcher while
processing and analysing the information about research topic. Research is a complex activity
and it is highly likely that some issues are faced by researchers. For this particular research, the
issues were sources through which data was supposed to be collected, time required to finish,
analyse and evaluate the research. Another issues were cost required to collect the data from
different sources as well as confidentiality of the respondents.
Validity and Reliability: This part covers the validity and reliability of the research. The
reliability of this research depends upon effective execution of test instrument which, in this
research, is questionnaire. To ensure the reliability, the questionnaire was effectively revised to
address issues and matters that were not understood by respondents. To ensure validity the

CHAPTER 5: RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION
The art of female beauty is a wider concept and there are various methods like cosmetic
as well as plastic surgery that help a woman in enhancing her beauty. There are various
techniques and different types of treatments associated with these methods that are adopted by
women to aid the purpose.
However, there are various issues and dangerous risks associated with plastic and
cosmetic surgeries. One such risk is of improper treatment. The results are not always expected
and sometimes the women opting for these methods have certain side-effects like blisters and
skin irritations that causes various type of skin problems to them. There are various factors that
causes such effects post-surgery. One of the major factor is the surgeon. Women sometimes opt
for those surgeons who still requires practice and lacks in experience. These surgeons fail to
determine the elements that could affect the skin as well as the whole body. Thus, women must
opt for the ones which are highly experienced in the field and must get themselves effectively
27

checked to determine the safest treatment for their surgery that help them in enhancing their
female beauty rather than causing risk to their skin.
Another risk associated with the treatment is the uneven weight distribution after
Liposuction. Considered one of the most dangerous treatment, this technique is quite ineffective
to certain individuals who don't stand up to the mark for treatment. In other words, it can be said
that while opting for this treatment, women must opt in for check-ups to determine if their bodies
are fit enough to handle the after-effects of the treatments. One good candidate is an adult who
have elastic skin and a good muscle tone and those who are within 30% of their ideal weight.
Moreover, they must ensure that they are receiving proper care post-surgery and right amount of
medication to reduce and mitigate any risk related to their health and skin.
There are many other disorders associated with these surgeries like Disfigurement as well
as Nerve Damage that impacts negatively on the health of an individual. One of the
recommended ways for women opting for these treatments would be to try natural therapies and
methods like Yoga and Ayurveda that could help them effectively get desired results without the
risk of safety.
Conclusion:
From the given information, it can be concluded that The Art of Female Beauty is
concerned on improving the beauty of women and setting standards for seeing and measuring the
beauty. The methods like Plastic and Cosmetic surgery, however contributing in enhancing this
beauty, must be avoided until very necessary. It means that one must adopt natural methods as
these treatments have a lot of side effects as well risk of life and damage of body parts which are
too valuable for an individual to lose. Society influences the female beauty to a great extent up to
which beauty and the way of living of women is determined. Thus, societal norms, values and
beliefs must be role model for women to effectively decide upon their own beauty standards and
qualities.
CHAPTER 6: REFLECTION
While going through this research I have learned so many things about different things
that depict and define about what beauty is meant for them and how society perceive this. I also
came to know about the several arts such as painting, sculpture, holy books etc. which represent
about the the way people consider the beauty of female in past decades and up to what extend it
has been changes in thoughts of people now. Apart from this throughout my research I also came

to known about various methods or things that women are using from ancient time in order to
improve their looks. In addition to this I also get familiar with the fact that how society influence
the way people look toward the concept of beauty.
Throughout the research I have faced many issues like the time given to conduct this
research was not accurate. As the concept is very wider and along with this the topic “Art of
female beauty” also have a great history which is required to be consider in order to find out the
more accurate outcome for evidencing the research. But still I have tried my best to provide with
a relevant information in order to achieve the objective behind this research. Another major issue
that I had faced during this research is that while surveying over my questionnaire I have to
interact with respondents and some of them are not interested to answer them effectively. Apart
from this some of the women are shy to talk about what sort of surgery they go through and
reason behind them. So these are the major issues that I generally face throughout my research
but still I tried to complete my research with resource and time available to me. Luo2013
