Introduction
According to Cherry and Jacob (2016) performance improvement in healthcare refers to
activities carried out in a healthcare institution in order to improve health outcomes. Performance
improvement also entails the process of measuring and quantifying inputs and outputs of a
business, identifying the weaknesses and implementing changes in order to increase efficiency.
Performance improvement in healthcare therefore entails processes of setting objectives,
assessing and measuring outcomes, inducing and effecting change and making continuous
improvements to improve patient care and health outcomes.
Importance in healthcare
The importance of performance improvement is that it helps in mitigating risks and risk
factors that affect a health institution negatively. It also helps in assessing performance level and
coming up with strategies of improving performance. In addition, performance improvement
helps in predicting future outcomes which helps in planning effectively to ensure positive
outcomes (Graban 2018).
Case scenario
A certain problem was identified when there was a cholera outbreak. Hundreds of
patients visited the facility which was way higher than the staff could manage. This made the
nurses and other health workers to work for extremely long hours leading to fatigue and burnout.
With time, the workers could not manage their personal work effectively which resulted to stress
due to inability to achieve balance in work and personal life.

Using the performance improvement theory and techniques, it was easy to resolve this
challenge by setting goals and working hard towards achieving them, improving time
management, prioritization, effective communication and improvement of organizational skills
(Sherwood and Barnsteiner 2017).
Improved results from use of PI
Performance improvement efforts led in better results as workers were able to achieve a
work life balance. It also improved their commitment towards work and also helped to equip
workers with organizational and managerial skills best suited to handle similar critical situations.
