Significant Learning
Experience: Describe
one significant learning
experience in this course
related to the CLPNA
Competency identified.
Provide an example
One of the key learning experiences which I encountered
during my practice in this course is the need to demonstrate
the 10 ‘rights’ of administering medications to a patient.
These include making sure that the drug to be administered
is right in terms of form and name, is administered to the
correct patient in need of it, at the right dosage, right
routes, right frequency and time, using correct patient
documentation, adequate patient assessment and history
along with ensuring that patient autonomy to refuse even
after explaining the drug’s purpose and evaluation possible
interactions. The learning experience also comprise of
checking the medication thrice prior to medication
administration, when acquiring it from the cart, followed by
checking when taking from the container and lastly when
the medication is being returned to the cart (College of
Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta, 2019).
A key example of this learning experience was when I had to
administer medication for a diabetic medication metformin
to a diabetic patient, at a dosage of 1000 mg, at 3 pm via
oral tablets after taking consent from the patient after
explaining to him regarding side effects like fatigue and
weakness and need to avoid consuming with alcohol or in an
empty stomach.
What you Learned:
Describe what you
learned and how it relates
to the competency
identified.
This learning experience taught me how I can administer
correct medications to the patient, which are compliant to
his or her healthcare as well as safety needs by using the 10
rights as well as the 3 checks pertaining to the correct
medication administration. This practice and learning
experience allows nurses to prevent any medication errors -
a pre-requisite mentioned and related significantly to the
identified competency (College of Licensed Practical Nurses
of Alberta, 2019).
Proficiency Rating: Use
the “Proficiency Rating
Categories” (excellent,
good, fair, poor) to rate
Based on my learning till date, I would rate my proficiency
as ‘good’ for this particular CLPNA competency. Adequately
and diligently adhering to the 10 rights and 3 checks criteria
