The reading review sheet must be completed each week and your responses should be posted onto
Camion. The purpose of reading sheet is to give you the opportunity to reflect on the reading, share your
understanding of the reading, and to let me know that you are using the readings to further your
understanding of the topic. In order to properly engage with the reading review sheet, I have added the
following prompts. Keep in mind, I am not expecting you to read the article word-for-word; however, I
am expecting that you will properly engage with the article by skimming and focusing on parts of the
article that might hold the best source of information...keep this in mind as you look over the
articles/readings.
1. Was the reading useful and in line with the topic for week? If yes, why was the reading useful? If
no, why not and what would have made the reading more useful; in your opinion?
A reading entitles “superintendent perspectives of financial survival strategies in small school districts” is
fundamental and in-line with the topic of study this week. The article advances on the knowledge
acquired in the classroom setting by exploring real world strategies of finance. The article also brings
forth an understanding of finance related challenges in small district schools in Texas. Most importantly,
the article explores the methods used by district schools to overcome financial challenges.
2. Did you find something significantly important within the article/reading that informed your
understanding of school finance? If yes please share this along with a page and or passage from
the reading.
The article has vital aspects that promote my understanding of school finance. The article brings to board
effective money management as a significant aspect for the survival of a school superintendent. Some of
the school finance concepts required to be articulate in the learning process include the legal aspects of
managing resources, data management, budget formulation and budget management. It is also essential to
avoid making errors as this might hinder the trust of the community and the entire school board in the
process. This article directs me to get a deeper insight into the effects of deficit budget because I realized
its adoption has been the cause of financial crisis among Texas district schools.
3. What part of the reading caught your eye/grabbed your attention and why? (In order to respond
to this question you are required to give as specific page and part of the reading, then explain
yourself).
My attention was caught by the challenging financial climate in education located on page 3 of
the article (Abshier, Harris, & Hopson, 2011). The author argues that school leaders are being
asked to stretch the existing resources and expected to deliver more using minimal resources. On
the same note, resources are dwindling and expectations are always escalating. This part of the
article reminds me on the need to be an effective manager as much as finance is concerned. The
work environment might not be as greener as theory may seem. Stress and anxiety might be the
future zones of discomfort in the profession if school finance is not pursued with an interest.
4. How do you see yourself using information from the article in the future?
This article is fundamental in my future profession. I will employ some of the strategies applied
by superintended in curbing the challenges relating to my profession. For instance, I shall engage
in personal evaluation and development programs to increase my efficiency in promoting
financial wellbeing. I will also ensure that expenditures in energy are minimal to prioritize
essential needs (Salvalai et al., 2017). Furthermore, I will play a vital role in uplifting my
understanding of shrewd management of purchasing methodologies.
