Purpose: In this assignment, you are required to show understanding of different
techniques or strategies to present the meaning of new vocabulary, the application
of those techniques, and the appropriate level*.
*Note: Even though you may not be familiar with students’ level, you need to begin
considering what words would be appropriate to teach at what level.
Task: Write two different presentation techniques for each of the following words
and state for what level the technique is appropriate. Use varied techniques, write a
description of the activity, and provide an example for each technique.
For this assignment, consider the following points:
a- The words on the list should not be part of one lesson. They are independent of
one another. In a real lesson, the words to pre-teach are always an integrated
part of it.
b- Some of these words have more than one meaning; therefore, choose the one
meaning you want to teach.
Wait for your tutor’s correction of this assignment before submitting
assignment 5.
Example: To bend
Technique 1: demonstrating /miming (Low level)
I would bend down to show the meaning of the word “bend” or I would show a piece
of flexible material and I would bend it.
Technique 2: definition (Intermediate +)
I would define the word bend as follows: shape or force something straight into a
curve or angle.

3. Fascinating (Intermediate onwards)
Technique 1: Object based example and definition (Intermediate +).
I will use an object that the students would be extremely interested in, or I will give them a
proposition that will interest them, like a dinner party or a movie. Then I will inform them that
their state of excitement and interesting is also called being fascinated. Then I will define the
word ‘fascinating’ as : Something that is extremely interesting.
4. Outrageous (intermediate onwards):
Technique 1: Real life example and definition (intermediate +).
I will tell the students ‘somebody has stolen all the food and gifts for the orphan children’, and
ask them what they think of such act. They will say that it is extremely bad, or something on
similar lines. I will define the act as ‘outrageous’.
5. To get along with:
Technique 1: Acting (Low level)
I will select two students as volunteers and make them pretend to have an argument. After a
while I will make them do a task together. Then I will explain the class – In the first case, they
were not getting along with each other, while in the second case, they are.
Technique 2: Definition (intermediate +)
I will define ‘to get along with’ as: To have a friendly relationship with someone.
6. Butcher:
Technique 1: Video (low level)
I will show the class, a video of a butcher cutting meat (I will make sure that the video is age
appropriate. For younger students, I would use a cartoon picture). Then I will tell them the
definition.

7. To shake (Beginners’ level only. Shaking is a basic action and intermediate students are
expected to know it):
Technique 1: Acting (low level)
I will pick up an object and shake it. I will ask the students to do the same with something near
their hands. Then I will tell them that the act is called to shake.
8. Polite:
Technique 1: Acting + defining (Both levels).
I will select two students as volunteers. I will make one student throw a paper ball at the other
and make the other student rudely talk to the former. Then I will make the second student throw
the paper back at the first student and apologise to him / her. Then I will tell the class that being
polite is to behave in the second manner.
For intermediate students, I will provide the definition first, then make them act but remove the
‘being rude’ part.
9. Soil (intermediate only for this definition):
Technique 1: Define and picture example
I will define ‘soil’ as ‘to make something dirty’ and mentioning that it is a verb. Then I will show
them some picture examples of dirty objects and tell them that the act of spoiling these obnjects
is called soiling it.
