Introduction
Aviation management can be described as the aviation related operations in the industry
of air transport. The aviation managers that work in this field or the industry work for the
airplanes and the airports and thus are responsible for the overall smooth functioning of the
business operations (Merkert & Morrell 2012). The Australian International Airlines (AIA) is
considered to be the low cost carrier and it operates schedules flights through 10 leased Airbus
A330-200 aircrafts and the aircrafts has an all economy class seating arrangements. Recently, the
CEO of the board of the Australian International Airlines wishes to bring changes in the present
business model so that AIA can become a full service carrier. The AIA wants to expand its
business operations by expanding the current route network. This will enhance the business
operation and bring desired profits. Thus, a specific part of the strategy includes the acquisition
of the 20 Boeing B787-8 or B787-9 aircrafts to support the new product offering and network
expansion. The study is based on the analysis of the Boeing B787-9 which is an improved
version of the 787-8 aircraft. This study will be divided into two different sections, the first
section will emphasis on the investigation of the route opportunities of the Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
While, the second section will be a proposal for AIA Boeing B787-9 product design and route
network.
Investigation of route opportunities for Boeing B787-9 aircraft
The payload range capability for the Boeing B787-9 aircraft is 15742km or 8500 nautical
miles. The passenger capacity of a Boeing B787-9 is 252 with 3 major classes. The length of the
aircraft is 62.8m, and the wingspan is 60m, height of the aircraft is 16.9m. The engines are 2x
Rolls Royce Trent 1000 with a maximum speed of 954km/hr and a maximum range of 15,400
(Sodhi & Tang 2012).
Proposed new routes for AIA- The new routes that can be proposed for the AIA service
includes the following:
Sydney-Port Vila (Vanuatu)
Sydney-Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea)
Sydney-Honiara (Solomon Islands)

Qantas air routes-The competitors of AIA are several domestic and international airline
companies like Qantas, Jetstar airways, Tigerair Australia, and Regional Express Airlines.
However, for this study Qantas airlines is considered due to it market presence and it provides
international flights. The various flights that are offered majorly by Qantas from Sydney are as
follows:

Routes from which Qantas previously has withdrawn-However, it is important to note
that the Qantas has stopped its service to the island nations like Port Vila (Vanuatu), Port
Moresby (Papua New Guinea), Honiara (Solomon Islands), Kawasaki (Japan). As, it has already
been mentioned that these are the proposed air routes where AIA can operate by using their
Boeing B787-9 aircraft (Homsombat, Lei & Fu 2014).
Opportunities-The existing networks provide excellent opportunities for growth for the
existing networks by introducing the higher frequencies of flight along with the increased class
differences that can highly impact the revenue earned by the AIA. Previously, there were only 10
aircrafts which were operated by AIA with reduced frequency and limited to only 2 flight
services per day. The existing routes will also provide an added benefit of new classes and at the
same time the affordable rates of air travel.
Market competition-AIA will face stiff competition from the Qantas airlines in terms of
the some of the air routes which connects the big capital cities. Qantas provides services to
Singapore, Bangkok, Beijing and this a major area of competition for AIA considering the
overlapping services. A reduced amount of demand can be noticed considering the dominance of
the Qantas airlines in this air routes. However, the highlighting fact is that Qantas has stopped
providing service to the small island nations. The competitive and affordable rates of fare
charges will greatly benefit AIA in maintaining monopoly in the short distance flights. Both the
small islands that surround Australia will be greatly benefit from the existing and the new
proposed air networks or routes (Scotti et al. 2012).
Recommendations
Pre-flight- Pre-flight checks are one of the important aspects for any airline company to
maintain its service quality at par with the other airline companies. This is done to ensure that the
aircraft functions properly and at the same time ensures that the passengers safety at all costs.
Thus, pre-flight checks include the following aspects:

Performance check of the aircraft

C.G and weight is checked
The baggage is secured, stowed and weighed.

In-flight- the inflight services that the AIA can offer to its passengers will include the
both the free and the paid services and this will have an impact on the flying experiences of the
passengers. The free services that ca be rendered by the AIA to the passengers will include the
beverages, snacks, and meals.
Seat configuration- the new Boeing B787-9 aircrafts will have 3 major classes such as
economy, economy plus and business class. The economy class (EC) will have 116 seats (3.0
recline), economy plus (EP) will have 88 standard seats (4.0 recline), and the business class (BC)
will have 48 flatbed seats (180 degrees recline). The inflight entertainment systems will include
the features like moving map systems (BC), audio entertainment (BC, EC, EP), video
entertainment (EP, BC), personal televisions (BC), inflight movies (BC), closed captioning (BC),
inflight games (BC). The business class passenger will have the delight of the 5 course meal
consisting of the ice-creams, cheese course, choice of entrée, salad and chilled appetizer.
Depending on the flight time, the mid-flight snacks will include the snacks, fresh fruits and along
with the option for the wines and beers. While the economy class and economy class passengers
will have the delight of the bistro menu, snack menu, beer and wines and mid-flight snacks and a
complementary meal service (Kaminski-Morrow 2014).

One of the highlighting theory that can be applied here is the Maslow’s hierarchy of
needs, this theory is an entirely based on the consumer behaviour and it takes into account the
self-actualization, esteem, belongingness, safety, and the physiological needs of a consumer.
Maslow’s provide an insight into the prospect of a customer and how the security, safety and the
needs play a major role into the needs of the consumers. This has strong connection with the way
consumers plan to make an air travel and for that purpose, and for that purpose a consumer look
for how safe will be the airline service provider is. Along with the it the consumers that

emphasize on the riding the business class will focus on the benefits provided by buying tickets
of that class. This validates the consumers’ needs towards the validation and recognition (Lester
2013).
The theory of Autocratic leadership is applicable in this scenario of aviation
management. The CEO of AIA took the decision of acquiring 20 more Boeing B787-9 aircrafts
to enhance the existing the airline operations. The decision is taken to enhance the existing of
flight of airlines and along with it gain competitive advantage over it market competitor, Qantas.
The underlying aim was to make a transition from a partial to a full service network carrier. The
existing fleet of 10 A330-200 was not sufficient to cope up with the increasing number of the
consumers. Thus, it was thought by the CEO of AIA that increasing the number of the existing
fleet of aircrafts will increase the frequency of the flights in the existing routes. This will also
help AIA in increasing the number of the flights and cater to the needs of increasing the
international flights (Rast III, Hogg & Giessner 2013.).
The new markets for AIA are the island nations in which Qantas do not provide service.
Such nations are located near Sydney airport and this will help AIA to operate frequent flights to
and fro from Sydney. The flight frequency of AIA will increase with increase in the new
markets. The island nations that are located near are Sydney airport will provide higher freqnecy
of flights while the flights that connect the major capital cities of China, Japan, Malaysia,
Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand will have one flight per day.

Pre-flight- The on-ground service will cater to the needs of the passengers that will be
waiting to board the aircraft. The waiting rooms will have the provision of the eateries and
reading rooms with good collection of books to suit the taste of the passengers. The waiting
rooms will have the resting provisions. The business lounges will be made accessible for the
business class passengers that will want to take the facilities of the first class service. The
passenger check ins will have the best in class LCD panels to show the arrival and the departures
of the aircrafts. Additionally, the check in places will have the help desk to help the passengers if
they have confusion (Namukasa 2013).
