Financial Analysis and Recommendation Report

The assignment is for a Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) course, where students are required to conduct research on two company shares and submit a written report. The report should include an executive summary, company background, calculation of average returns and standard deviation, comments on financial health, recommendation, and rationale. Regulations
A. Late Submission
 A 10% deduction per day of total coursework marks (excluding weekends and public
holidays).
 Late submission between 5 to 10 days, results in a 50% deduction of total coursework
marks.
 Late submission past 10 days results in an automatic 0% for coursework and the
student will be barred from the final examination.
B. Deliverables
Students must submit all materials supporting their coursework listed in the deliverable
section.
 The coursework must be entirely your own work. Please make sure that you are aware
of the rules concerning plagiarism. If you are unclear about them, please consult your
program coordinator/lecturer.
 The coursework should exhibit formal research skills i.e. with a table of content,
proper citations, references, and appendixes.
 The coursework write up must be able to demonstrate critical analysis and application
of both theory and practical issues to the company that you have selected.
 Student may include additional relevant data/information apart from the proposed
guidelines in conjunction to your research. Additional marks will be awarded for such
attempt.
Plagiarism is presenting somebody else’s work as your own. It includes: copying
information directly from the Web or books without referencing the material; submitting
joint coursework as an individual effort; copying another student’s coursework; stealing
coursework from another student and submitting it as your own. Suspected plagiarism will
be investigated and if found to have occurred will be dealt with according to the
procedures set down by the university/college.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT (25%)
You are a financial intern for a local company. In the course of your internship your
manager needs to make a decision on which company share to invest in. You are required
to select 2 company shares and conduct a research to determine the performance of the
companies. These are the tasks that you are supposed to undertake:
1. Identify 2 companies to conduct your research on
2. Obtain a 5-year historical price of the share of both companies *refer to guide 1*
3. Calculate the average returns and standard deviation for both companies
4. Compare both companies in terms of average returns and standard deviation
5. Obtain the latest annual report for both companies no earlier than 2012 (annual
reports must be from the same year) *refer to guide 2*
6. Analyse and compare the financial health of both companies in terms of:
a. Liquidity
b. Leverage
c. Profitability
d. Market Perception
7. Provide conclusions on the financial health of both companies
8. Provide recommendation on which company share to invest
9. Provide rationale to your recommendation
Guide 1 – obtaining 5 year historical share price
1. In your web browser, go to http://finance.yahoo.com/
2. On the left sidebar, search for the company of your choice in “Quote lookup”
3. On the next page, click on “Historical prices” on the left sidebar
4. Select the appropriate Start date, End date and select the Weekly timeframe
5. Download the spreadsheet with the link at the bottom of the table
6. Delete all columns except the date and the adjusted close (the first and last
column)

Guide 2 – obtaining annual report
Annual reports should be available with a simple search in the web or even gotten it from
the website of a public listed company.
Note: Please refer to the sample annual report given in Blackboard
You are required to produce a report based on your findings. Your report should consist
of the following topics:
