Case study summary
Darren is a 19 years old Australian boy, born in Australia to Australian parents. He experienced
problems in meeting the requirements of attendance and other TAFE course work related
programs and discontinued his high school studies. Darren suffered from depression and anxiety
and was prescribed was prescribed antidepressants. His behaviour has become aggressive and
threatening to his mother and siblings. When Darren was just 13, his father, who was an alcoholic,
left home and has had limited contact with the family ever since. Darren’s father has been unable
to support his family financially and has not been able to spare time for his kids. Darren has
indulged in late night activities and spends most of his day sleeping. Moreover, Darren does not
have a stable relation with his high school friend, David. Darren’s mother is suspicious of her son,
Darren to be involved in a sexual relation with David. However, when she tries to discuss with
Darren about this, he behaves aggressively and declines to discuss about the matter. His mother is
suspicious that Darren does drugs and other substance abuse as his mood swings between
extremes. Sometimes Darren seems to be full of energy and outgoing while at other times he
seems to be dull and irritable. His mother is perturbed by his threatening behaviours and for the
safety of her other children, she is exploring the option of shifting Darren from her house.
