BARRIERS TO INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
Introduction
Intercultural communication is the form of exchange of information take place among
the mix of people from difficult cultures and backgrounds. A scholar named Edward T
Hall, in his book named The Silent Language in 1959, uses this term intercultural
communication first time. Intercultural communication can be based on various aspects
of the conscience of an individual like psychology, sociology, anthropology, and
linguistics (Jenifer & Raman, 2015).
Levels of Culture
When an organization is looked upon then one can find about the presence of various
cultures in the organization. Mainly there are three levels of cultures in an organization
and society as well. There is a scholar named Edgar Schein, who have divided the
culture mainly in three levels that are Espoused Values, Basic Underlying Assumptions
and last is Artefacts and Symbols (Schein, 2010).
Espoused Values: This cultural level concerned with the values, rules of
conduct and standards. It deals with the methods chosen by the organization to
express the organizational objectives, strategies, and philosophies. It also takes
care of the methods to make them public. In aligning, the ideas of managers and
organization can arise some problems; however, it is the responsibility of both to
conclude.
Basic Underlying Assumptions: these are the assumptions that are deeply
embedded in the culture of an organization. This is the foundation of the cultural
atmosphere of an organization. These are expressed as the behavior that is
considered unconscious and self-evident in nature.
Artifacts and Symbols: this cultural level marks the physical surface of the
organization. It implies physically and tries to influence the minds of customers
and employees of the organization.
