BASIC CONCEPTS OF TOYOTA PRODUCTION SYSTEM
Introduction
The prime determination of the paper is to focus on the basic concepts such as J.I.T,
Kanban, Takt-Time, Muda, Jidoka, Genchi genbutsu, Standardization, Kaizen, 5S’s,
Environmental management system ISO 14001 and Health and safety management system
18001 of TPS (Toyota Production Systems).
Discussion
Just-in-Time
The time in the production houses can be minimised effectively in Toyota Production
houses with the Just-In-Time manufacture (Balakrishnan 2015). This aspect helps in lowering
the labour costs and improvement of the quality of service offered by this organization.
Kanban
It is defined as the type of scheduling system used in the TPS for the JIT manufacturing
and the lean manufacturing. The manufacturing efficiency of TPS can be improved significantly
with the use of this scheduling system.
Takt-time
It is defined as the average time between the start of one unit of the production and the
next unit of the production. This aspect is applied in the Toyota Production Systems. The flow of
good can be managed effectively with the help of this process.
Muda
It is defined as the uselessness in the lean process thinking. Categories of Muda are Muda
type II and the Muda Type I. The Muda Type I is very much essential for the consumers of this

system and the Muda type II is the hidden costs associated with the production house which
should be eliminated.
Jidoka
It is defined as the type of principle which involves the application of intelligent
automated systems. This system requires minimum human intervention. According to the
concept of Jidoka, if there are any kinds of issues in the production units then the workers will be
stopping the production activities.
Genchi genbutsu
It is defined as the type of approach which is required in TPS for solving any kinds of
challenges associated to the production units (Gao and Low 2015). The problem solving
approach is very much essential for this business corporation as the growth and development
depends upon this approach.
Standardization
It is defined as the type of lean tools which is needed in every aspect of the production
unit of Toyota (Pinto et al. 2018). The different types of business processes in Toyota is
managed with the help of this tool. However, it is found that this is the least used tool among all
the other tools.
Kaizen
It is defined as the type of continuous improvement of all functions of a business process,
the TPS uses this concept in their working environment, it involves all the stakeholders
associated with the business.

BASIC CONCEPTS OF TOYOTA PRODUCTION SYSTEM
5S’s
The 5s methodology followed in TPS are Seioso, Seiri, Shitsuke, Seiketsu and Seiton.
This methodology is very much useful in the production houses as it helps in the enhancing the
efficiency of the stakeholders (Gao and Low 2014).
Environmental Management System ISO 14001
This system is very much useful for this business organization to deal with different types
of environmental conservation activities such as product technology, energy, pollution,
prevention and utilization of resources.
Health and Safety Management System
The flexibility of the stakeholders associated with TPS is maintained with the help of
health and safety management system. Security of the employees is maintained with the help of
this system.
Conclusion
The paper helps in concluding the different aspects of the TPS such as the Takt-Time,
Muda, Jidoka, Genchi genbutsu, Standardization, Kaizen, and Health and safety management
system 18001 which are used in the business for increasing the business efficiency.
