1BELIEFS AND VALUES OF SOCIOLOGY
The essay describes my current belief systems and values related to Social Work. I
would also like to put forward my line of thinking as a social worker by throwing some light
on the social work literature and social ethical values. The essay describes my future
prospects of working in Australia, the various advantages and disadvantages of working as an
employee of an organization of Social Work. The ideas and thoughts about my future
professional development as a social worker are discussed along with my knowledge on
social work literature. (Chenoweth & McAuliffe ,2005).
Regarding my personal background, I am a student of Nigeria, having pursued a
course in psychology in my graduation. The reason behind me pursuing a post-graduation
course in social works is that after graduation, I started to take a keen interest in what are the
various courses of Action that people take to survive in a community and what are the
barriers to prevent people from realizing their full potential. Belief systems are a sort of
structural frame that defines the unspoken truths of an organization. They have characteristics
such as personal commitments, having an existence independent of their committed believers,
possessing psychological mechanisms such as maintaining compatibility among individuals
and reliability on evaluative and effective components. (Chenoweth & McAuliffe 2005). As
a social worker, I can work on a macro level, with the organization I choose to work with as
well as on a micro level such as providing individual counselling. I can provide humanity
service by putting needs of others before myself .Another key aspect of Social Work that I
can provide to Australian customers is social justice. As a social worker, I need to respect the
social values of my future clients by considering ethnic and cultural diversities. Another
value which I need to implement is Integrity in my work approach. I need to be trustworthy
and avoid betraying client confidentiality. Lastly, I need to be competent in my area of
expertise in Social Work so as to deal with competitors effectively. (Gitterman & Germain

1976). I can choose to work as a social worker in the following fields to match my
preferences and tastes. Community Social Workers is a field that I can choose which
identifies areas needing improvement in communities. I can create and implement plans to
remedy problems and measure effectiveness to foster new growth. As a community social
worker, I could work for international organizations, travel abroad and work for grassroot
organizations. Healthcare Social Workers give frontline services to patients and their
families. By being a health social worker, I can find a job in schools and hospitals. This
would mean helping underpriviledged children get proper facilities for their education.
(Osborne, Benner, Sprague & Cleveland, 2016). Military and Social welfare workers work
with military veterans .In this field, I could find employment in military bases and hospitals,
mental health clinics, addiction centres, community centres and medical facilities. (Himle,
Jayaratne & Thyness 1991). By studying social work, students are equipped with knowledge,
skills and values that can be applied across communities and populations. (Mlcek, 2013). As
a Social Worker, I may have to deal with serious criminals and drug addicts. Professionally, I
may have to deal with clients having disabilities and mental problems. Social Workers in
Australia provide valuable services to enhance the quality of life of their people. These are
dedicated professionals who like to create a positive impact. Social work has real rewards and
challenges. After a thorough analysis of prospects in Social Work in Australia, I want to put
forward some advantages of pursuing Social Work in Australia. (Banks, 2012). Social
Workers have limitless opportunities, as it is one of the fastest growing professions having a
high demand both in Australia and throughout the world. Moreover, social work is a great
way to gain valuable local experience locally. As a social work professional in Australia, I
will implement my knowledge of human behaviour and development, various stages of life-
cycle, social networking and human disabilities, both mental and physical. (Thompson,
2015). The next reason why I would like to pursue social work as a profession is that real

changes are brought about by social workers. I would bring certain values to the organization
I will be working for such as service, social justice, dignity and worth of an individual,
importance of human relationships, integrity and competence Making Social Work as a
profession will see myself on the frontline of social change. Albeit challenging, this
profession is extremely rewarding where I, as I social worker, can bring about a positive
impact on lives of people and communities. (Gray, Joy, Plath & Webb , 2013). The future
work aspects of being a social worker in a company include doing many tasks in a single day.
As a professional , I might have to work at my desk or else working face-to-face with
people. I might have to engage in community development programmes, social research and
client advocacy. If I start my career in Australia as a Social Worker, I have to deal with
unfamiliar governments, education requirements which need to be allowed in Australia.
(Howe, 2017). I have to inculcate awareness of justices in societies through professional
standards and bringing positive changes in the societies. I may be faced with situations where
I have to deal with people living in slum areas and help in improving their way of life.
Moreover, I must deal with different providers to make my living affordable in Australia such
as health insurance and medical services, accommodation, phone and banking services. While
working as a Social Work professional in Australia, the future challenges posed may include
cost-efficiency challenges in close-knit communities, poverty and an increased need for
medical care. (Garbarino, 2017).
In conclusion, I can say that as a professional of Social Work in Australia, I would be facing
certain problems regarding my ethical perspectives such as social workers do the job of both
controllers and helpers. Working as a professional of Social Work, I can make lives of people
better in Australia who are struggling to survive, feel alone and cannot solve their problems
alone. To develop myself professionally, I will engage with people whose physical
incapabilities or constraints reduce their ability to protect themselves as well as their near and

dear ones. Focusing on child welfare, I will ensure that children are safe and well, and are
getting a proper life of education and well-being. (Reamer, 2013). As a social worker, I may
have to deal with analysis of policies and driving reforms. Professionally, as a social
worker, I can provide service to the underdeveloped individuals .Social workers need to
focus on developing human relationships. The biggest advantage that I will gain by adopting
Social Work as a profession is that I would get inner satisfaction by helping others in need. I
will develop certain traits and qualities within myself by working as a social worker like
compassion, listening carefully to people and problem solving ability. (Thompson, 2015). By
working as a social worker, I can actually live out my beliefs and values such as fairness and
justice to improve the overall well-being of people in a community. This will provide me a
chance to grow and develop my personality and become a better human being. (Garbarino,
2017).
