(Based on Block 1 concepts) consider the following description of an ICT and draw a detailed
block diagram taking care of processes and data flow directions.
An employee has a laptop connected to a mouse and a headset via Bluetooth. At the same time
the laptop is connected to the company wired LAN and access the database server. Also the
company has LCDs in different floors for urgent announcements and fingerprint scanner
machines which are used for log in/out by employees.

In Block 2 Part 3 you learnt about many wireless technologies, but still there is more. LiFi is a promising
wireless technology. Search the web to answer the following.
1. What does LiFi stands for? (1 mark)
Answer 1: Lifi stands for Light Fidelity.
2. What is the standard family of LiFi? (1 mark)
Answer 2: the standard family of LiFi is similar to Wi-Fi’s IEEE 802.11
3. How transmitted? Types of electromagnetic spectrum waves used. (1 mark).
Answer 3: LiFi used the optical spectrum as Visible light portion (from red to blue) to
provide large bandwidth.
4. What is the data rate of LiFi? (1 mark)
Answer 4: Lifi can transmit 10 Gbps to 100 Gbps depend on the environment.
5. What is the optimum operating range? (1 mark)
Answer 5: Optimum operating range of LiFi is between 380 nm to 780 nm.
6. Explain three applications for LiFi. (6 marks)
Answer 6: There are multiple applications of LiFi from internet access to auto pilot cars
that communicate through headlights.
1. Traffic management: Li-fi can be used to communicate with the passing vehicle
through the lights of cars, can assist to manage the traffic in an efficient manner.
2. Efficient internet connection in aircraft: in aircraft, the typical connection provide
low connection rate at very high cost. Also Wi-Fi cannot be used as it can interfere with
navigation system. Lifi can be useful to provide high connection rate through light
sources such as bulb present inside the planes.
3. Underwater application: Typical remotely operated vehicles (ROV) are connected with
large cable for power and signal transferring. It is a drawback as vast areas cannot be
explored. Li-Fi can be utilized to connect the ROV and the pilot through underwater.
7. List four limitations of Li-Fi. (4 marks)
1. For efficient transmission, the connection the lights needs to be connected directly. If
there is any obstacle between receiver and transmitter the signal connection will be
disable.
2. Other sources of light can interfere the connection such as sunlight, normal bulbs.

3. Needs high cost investment to implement a large scale Li-Fi system.
4. It provides point to point connection only while using high frequency (400- 800 THz)
