Introduction
Employment relationship is defined as the efforts and initiative of an organization in order to build and
manage effective relationship with human resources of firm. The main reason of making positive
employee relation is to keep employees and staffs loyal, trustworthy and engaged them with goals &
objectives of firm (Greenwood and Rasmussen, 2017).
Sainsbury' s is the second largest supermarket chain of UK that offers everything from groceries,
electronics, clothing to home wares and more. The company founded in 1869 with a shop in Drury
Lane, London, it became largest grocery retailer in 1922.

Practical And Legal Challenges In
Employment Relationship
 Paid leaves: It is stated from last few years that state and local government made various laws
that assist paid leaves for workers which creates a lot of confusion and problem for employer in
order to assess who is needed associate with laws at every level as well as risk compliance
issues. Thus it creates barrier in managing employment relation in better ways. Employer will
need to constantly stay update tow-heads all paid leaves that are approve in states where they do
business (Countouris, 2016).
 Minimum wage: Local level of government changing the law of minimum wage. Due to
unchanged minimum wages law from decades, many states are boosting minimum wage as per
themselves. This creates barrier in effective employment relationships. Thus employer needs to
update with several changes taken within minimum wages so as to ensure submission at local
and state level.

These challenges affect the working environment of business. Challenges that are faced by
Sainsbury are as under-
Competition- It very important for businesses to recruit and retain potential employees in order to
accomplish goals. For Sainsbury it difficult to do so, as it has to compete with others who are
providing good benefits to their employees. New employees are not ready to work for Sainsbury
as they are ready to come out of their comfort zones. Platform like Glassdoor provides different
options and they are influence by them and they create strong brand image.

Compensation and Benefits- It becomes difficult for small enterprises
to provide same or more benefit and compensation, that are provided
by big names. Sainsbury needs to modify its policies so that it can
provide good compensation and benefits its employees. Good perks
are reasons for employees resign.
Succession Planning and Continuous learning- These both factors
are crucial as they leads to growth of employees and organisation. For
Sainsbury HR its difficult to motive employees to learn and go
according to plan. Employees growth path is neglected as they are

Legislation- Laws are become more employees friendly this has created problems for companies. As
these laws also covers hiring practices, payments etc., this make difficult for Sainsbury to
operates. Company employees can easily misuse their powers.

Recommendations
Sainsbury needs to modify its policies in order to provide good compensation and benefits to its
employees. They should provide rewards to motivate and to attract employees so that they
increase their performance. Company should hire statutory compliance agencies. These agencies
work with guidelines according to standards of industry, that will provide expert opinion and it
will be time saving. Corporate social activities will create bond between employees and
employers. Process of structured onboarding helps employees to come out from awkwardness.
Company employees can solve their conflicts, questions and concerns from this structure.

 Sexual harassment at workplace: One of the biggest challenge arise within employment
relations. Employee altering their ways towards training and presentation after #metoo
movement. Legislations regarding workplace harassment has been passed on many states and
municipalities that outlines several laws and regulation that have to comply by employees with
consisting training and policies.
 Reasonable accommodations: It is most common law that creates confusion for both the
employer and employee. For instance emotional and service support at work place. In terms of
employers of Sainsbury it is advisable to not to heritage for complying with HR and experts if
they are not sure for how to handle reasonable accommodation laws (Drahokoupil and Fabo,
2016).

 Civil rights act: This consist as the employee in within a organisation should be respected
regardless their colour, gender, occupation, nationality. This gives legal tool for women
employees regarding sexual harassments. In terms of respective organisation employer's feels
challenge of building effective employment relationship due to misuse of civil right act.
Thus some legislations creates difficulty for employers to fire employees for act of misconduct,
misuse of laws may, expecting extra work is also a problem due to some laws that forces employers
to fulfil requirements of employees in order to accomplish business objectives.

Recommendations To A Set Of Employment
Relations Issues
 Use digital technology: In terms of building effective employment relations it is suggested for
employers of Sainsbury to develop a mobile communication app that helps to showcase trust
and transparency between employees. This helps to know when to focus on employees in term
of clearly communicate goals and take mutual decisions that are important for both employees
productivity and firm's performance.
 Create growth and leadership opportunities: Another way to fix issues related is to provide
training to employees based on digital workplace can be helpful for employees to use and
improve their skills and abilities. In terms of employer of respective organisation should
motivate and inspire its employees to use digital tools that helps them to become more
valuable for themselves, firm as well as for their families (Audenaert, George and Decramer,
2019).

 Develop a centralized employee relations oversight team: It is also an important method of
solving the challenges arise at workplace in terms of employment relations. In terms of
management of Sainsbury should build an effective team that represent various departments for
well rounded presentation of firm. This helps to meet objectives that build ideas and strategies
based on digital data towards employee motivation. This helps in resolving conflicts, track
employees engagement and feedbacks.
 Establish complete transparency & open communication: In terms of engaging employees and
building better relationships with them it is suggested for management of respective firm use
digital workplace for encouraging open communication and let each and every employee
contribute and participate within it. Thus open communication and transparency plays
significant role in driving engagement and employment relationships that reflects better
performance of employees.

firm employers of Sainsbury needs to identify actual desires of employees or teams that affected
them in producing of effective performance. It is important for employee satisfaction to
understand the needs fr which managers of respective can use employee apps, to conduct
surveys and feedbacks for employees in order to make them assure that their needs are to be
meet (Aloisi, 2018).
Thus all these are the methods that helps employers of Sainsbury in dealing challenges occurs in
employment relationships, helps to engage employees and building effective relations at work

As per above discussion it is observed that employee relationship is the tool that helps the
management of firm in developing successful relationship within people and group of people at
workplace. There are several legal challenges comes within employment relations that creates
barriers for employers in order to gain effective performance. There are several ways and methods
that guide employers and management regarding developing better employee relations for
accomplishment of better results.
