About This Document
Australia is a highly wildfire prone area due to its Mediterranean type of climate. The Victoria Black Saturday bushfire in 2009 and the Wye River/Separation Creek bushfire in 2015 caused massive damage and loss of life. Building regulations and safety measures such as fire-resistant houses, bushfire shutters, non-combustible decking, roof sprinkler systems, mesh fly screens, and taking shelter in underground areas can protect houses and inhabitants. The Victorian Royal Commission has generated the ‘stay or leave’ policy and provisioned that reducing fuel loads from the area can reduce damage and death rates caused by wildfires.
