Executive Summary:
The aim of the report is to provide an insight into three different organizations and their growth
in the international business environment. It comprises of both the public and the private sector
healthcare firms that include NHS, Bupa and Marie Curie. Public sector firms represent
organizations that are operated and owned by government and provide services to the citizens.
This sector through the process of outsourcing will engage the private enterprises in the delivery
of goods as well as services to the citizens. Private sector represents firms that are run by the
individuals with the sole aim of making profit. The findings of the report shows a detailed
analysis of each of the firm with respect to background information, vision, mission and
objectives, products or services, organizational structure, size, scope, legal structure and the
stakeholders. The report also portrays an interrelationship between the organizational function
and its structure and objectives with respect to a particular organization.

1.0 Introduction
The report aims at providing an overview of different organizations and the growth they
experience in international business environment. The chosen organizations include NHS, Bupa
and Marie Curie. NHS and Marie Curie has been a public sector organization while Bupa
operated both as a public and private sector. The international business environment helped in
enhancing the competition within the domestic market along with introducing newer
opportunities in the foreign market. The presence of global competition encouraged the company
in becoming more efficient and innovative in using the resources.
2.0 NHS (National Health Service)
a. Background Details of the Organization
The NHS has been born out of an ideal that implied good quality healthcare must remain
accessible to everyone irrespective of the wealth (england.nhs.uk 2019). This public sector
company had been launched in 1948 by the health minister Aneurin Bevan. NHS worked on
three basic principles which included meeting everyone’s needs, providing free service at
delivery point, meeting clinical need irrespective of the payment abilities.
b. The Products and Services They Supply
NHS puts across healthcare service for all the citizens of United Kingdom depending
primarily on the need of the healthcare instead of the ability of payment (nhs.uk 2019). The
organization is funded by the taxes.

c. The Size and Scope of the Organization
As far as the size is concerned, the hospital, community and the primary care settings of
NHS comprises of close to 150,000 doctors and more than 320,000 nurses and midwives
(nhsconfed.org 2019).
The scope of the NHS lies in responsibly helping people in improving the well being and
health. The role of NHS in prevention of poor health and promotion of healthier living
essentially reduces the inequalities of health and ensure the promotion of good health for
sustenance of the future generations.
d. Their Vision, Mission and Business Objectives
Vision: Their vision lies in connecting organization and people for creating an
environment that implements innovation and change for improving people’s wellbeing and
health (www.england.nhs.uk 2019).
Mission: The mission of the company lies in improving lives through improvement of
well being, health and experience. The company strives to undertake day to day things by
implementing professionalism and experience thereby making lives better.
e. Business Objectives:
The SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely) objectives of the
firm include:
ï‚· Increasing range of service wherever there is existence of opportunities for meeting a
customer demand and need.
ï‚· Providing a therapeutic and safe ambience for the staff , visitor and patient
ï‚· Enhancing the satisfaction level of the employees, patients and the medical officers.

As far as the short term plan of NHS is concerned, the company has been found to respond
to the varied needs of the populations. It not only put across plan for improving quality of the
service and minimizes errors but also value and support the staff. It makes sure that the public
funds are solely devoted to the patients of NHS. As a part of the long term plan the company
would balance the national direction with the local autonomy for securing best patient outcome.
Local implementation would be led by the leaders and the clinicians who remain directly
accountable for the patient care thereby ensuring the effective use of the public money.
f. The Organizational Structure
The organization is run by consultants, nurses and the general practitioners who are
responsible for accessing the local needs for health and thereby commission services for meeting
them. They also hold the responsibility of close to 60 percent of NHS budget
(www.nhshistory.net 2019). The Foundation Trust of NHS provides care and delivers
ambulance, hospital, social care, mental health and all basic healthcare services.

The legal structure of NHS is represented by the Foundation Trust that comprised of the

Foundation Trusts of NHS remains accountable to the regulator and the members.

This primarily includes the external stakeholders who remains engaged in contributing
experiences and views in addressing issues that are crucial to the service users, patients and

3.0 Bupa
a. Background Details of the Organization
The establishment of Bupa dates back to 1947. It is a company without the shareholders
which implied that customers have been their focus. Bupa represented an international healthcare
company that provided health insurance, treatment in the clinic, hospitals and dental centre and
the running care homes where the residents felt completely at home (bupa.com 2019).
b. The Products and Services They Supply
The products of the company included travel insurance, international health insurance for
the business, premium level international private health insurance, travel insurance and service s
related to the health centre, care homes and health insurance(bupa.com 2019). Bupa thus, puts
across ample options of health insurance with faster access to treatment, diagnosis and the
support based on the cover chosen by clients.
c. The Size and Scope of the Organization
As far as the size is concerned, Bupa serves close to 16.7million clients opting for health
insurance, provides healthcare services to close to 15 million people across its clinics, hospitals
and the dental centre. The organization also took care of over 22, 300 aged residents (bupa.com
2019).
As far as the scopes of the company are concerned, it creates value for the customers,
people, partners and the society. Bupa focuses on the customers and works with wider range of

Mission: The mission of the company lies in accomplishing the three pillars, customer,
people and performance.

include:
ï‚· Providing healthcare through hospitals, clinics, aged care facilities, advice services and
health insurance.
ï‚· Providing greater insight into the working of health systems thereby enabling better
meeting of the customer needs.
The short term plans of Bupa included investing in depth and strengths thereby prioritizing
the existing business and geographies including selective expansion in newer market and the
related lines of business. The short term plan also included winning locally. The long term plans
of the company remained in being focused on the efficiency, quality, compliance and safety

strengthening accountability and governance thereby increasing efficiency and speed. Presently,
the organization is structured into three market units thereby increasing accountabilities the
marketing units of Latin America, Europe and UK. The marketing units of New Zealand and
Australia will however remain unchanged (bupa.com, 2019).

Bupa has a peculiar legal status. This is because the name itself reflected it as a provident
and industrial society but in reality it was not. In reality, Bupa reflected a company that could be
limited by guarantee and could be demutualised easily from the legal perspective.

The external stakeholders of Bupa included physicians, patients, employers,
pharmaceutical firms, insurance companies and the government.
4.0 Marie Curie
a. Background Details of the Organization
When famous Nobel Prize winning physicist Marie Curie was admitted to Hospital and
transferred to NHS then committee members of the hospital took a decision to preserve Marie
Curie’s in the medical field. This led to the foundation of Marie Curie organization which was a
charity dedicated that alleviated people suffering from cancer (mariecurie.org.uk, 2019).

b. Products and Services They Supply
Marie Curie organization was established in the year 1948 and put across charity care to
closer to 40,000 patients who are terminally ill within the community.

The nine Marie Curie hospitals recruited over 2700 doctors, nurses and healthcare

Organizational structure represents series of divisions and functions and a divided chain
of command based on the structure and the area of interest of the business (Jones 2013). In case
of Bupa, the well structured organizational structure played a key role in global arena since it
allowed the organization to remain connected with the various elements of an organization.
Interaction with people, communication pattern, coordination and harmonious relationships has
been vital characteristics of an organizational structure that assisted the company in attaining the
foremost position within the healthcare sector of UK. The organizational structure have also
enabled Bupa to implement ease, levels, stiff delegation and on its overall functioning.
