INTRODUCTION
The environment in which business operates is changing tremendously affecting
operations of organisation. Business environment comprises different internal and external
factors which affect strategic business decision making. In today's changing environment,
organisations are a vital part of society as they generate employment for the community and can
be seen as an important source of economic growth. Organisations come in many sizes, forms,
types and operate in different environments.
For accomplishing the purpose of the report, different organisations are taken into
consideration and the impact of environment on their performance is evaluated.
P1 A. Types of organisations.
There are various types of organisations which have different scale of operations and
purposes to be fulfilled impacting the economy (Hilton and Platt, 2013). There are three main
types of organisations prevailing such as profit generating firms, non-profit making business
units and non-governmental organisations.
The UK economy has all three sections of organisations working impacting its
environment and growth rate.
Profit based organisations:
Any organisation whose prime motive is to earn money is known as profit making
organisations. Being a trading company, Asda is a merchandise and grocery retailer of British. It
is amongst the top three retailers in terms of profits. It earned £21,000 million revenue in the
year 2017 and has approximately 600 stores working selling daily utilities to customers. The sole
motive of Asda is to generate wealth for its shareholders and investors thereby, reducing debt
amount for company (Gouldson and Sullivan, 2013). The company starts its operation in 1965
with just one store and expanded to 600 stores till date thereby making huge profits.
The company diversified in different sector and has Asda supercentres, Asda living, Asda
petrol etc. Each different segment generates their own profit thereby contributing to GDP of UK
economy providing employment to a large section of society. The company has involved internet
and grab around 35% or market selling groceries online. However, the advantage of home based
shopping has provided Asda competitive advantage over others thereby generating revenue.
Lidl is a discount supermarket German based retail store having 1000 stores globally. It
has been incorporated in year 1930 serving employment to around 300,000 employees (Iskanius,

Page and Anbuudayasankar, 2010). It is the fifth largest retailer store selling discounted products
and had a sales revenue of around $85 million in year 2011. Lidl being a part of Schwarz Group
has a brand image which helps in generating profit for the company.
Non-profit based organisations:
An organisation or business unit which operates on a said objective that is to serve the
society or community thereby making only that much profit which is necessary for carrying out
its operations is known as non-profit organisations (Hilton and Platt, 2013). The NHS or
National Health Service is a public organisation constituted in 1948 and operates in England,
Wales, Ireland and Scotland providing health care services to all. The purpose of NHS is to
provide free of cost health services to needy and poor people. It focuses on rendering routine
health check-ups, emergency treatments, sole treatments, etc. to people irrespective of their
financial condition in and across UK.
Being a non-profit making organisation it is funded mainly from government taxation and
contribution made by National Insurance. It is a major employment provider which accounts to
60% of budget being distributed in form of salaries (Iskanius, Page and Anbuudayasankar,
2010). The NHS being the system of health aid focuses on building a strong community of active
staff who provides aid as and when needed to any place or in any situation.
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs):
NGOs are not constituted by government though being a non-profit making organisation.
These organisations are formed by either group of people or individuals whose aim is to serve
the society and do not require any legal formalities to start its operations as they are not a part of
government (Gouldson and Sullivan, 2013). Their focus is to develop the society by providing
education, health and safety, eradication of poverty, etc.
The Oxfam founded in the year 1942 is an organisation formed through integration of 20
charitable concerns whose motive is to eradicate poverty globally. The company directed by
Winnie Byanyima is situated in England and operates globally. It emphasizes on providing basic
amenities, sustainable resources, security, basic information and recognition to all. The company
operates through various shops located globally which sells fair trade and donated items. It has
around 1200 stores providing fair-trade items and necessary products which include CD's, books,
instruments, food and toys which will enhance their life. Though totally based on sponsorships

and charitable work for earning so as to help the society, Oxfam is an NGO responsible for
uplifting community (Iskanius, Page and Anbuudayasankar, 2010).
P1 B. Business purpose and supply of goods and services.
The business purpose of Asda and Lidl being a profit making organization has a defined
purpose to enhance its scale of operations so as to increase its sales figures. On the other hand,
both NHS and Oxfam has a similar purpose of serving the society in one form or the other. The
NHS and Oxfam has a sole motive of uplifting the people of society by providing them proper
healthcare and education facilities so as to enhance their standard of living.
The Asda and Lidl being a multinational retail supermarket companies are engaged in
supplying of daily routine goods and services to customers. Both the companies are engaged in
production of goods for profit making whereas NHS and Oxfam are service providing
organization which renders services for free.
P2 A. Difference between micro, small, medium-size and large enterprises.
Micro Enterprise -
These refers to the smallest shops in localities with minimal workers and small capital
investment. They are usually high in numbers as no formal training is required and small
investment is engaged.
Small Enterprise -
In today's era, small businesses still have a huge number of entrepreneurs running their
own family businesses or start-ups. Small business also known as the survival ventures have
limited resources and is solely responsible for all the risks and rewards of his or her business
venture. The business usually has less or no premises with few assets of its own and majorly
function on cash basis.
Medium-size enterprise -
Medium-size entrepreneurship are those businesses which have said mission, vision and
objectives clearly defined. They focus on rapid growth of the organization with increasing
business without incurring additional costs. Such Medium-size entrepreneurs focus on high
production, quick and easy distribution, faster networks and huge infrastructure availability to
make larger profits in the long run.
Large enterprise -

Large entrepreneurs are core innovators and high risk-takers which leads to evolvement
of new business ventures. Large entrepreneurship may even alter the competition through
tracking the external changes arising through economic and political instability. Such
entrepreneurs possess a niche market and influences cost to company. Below is a detailed
example of all 4 organisations-
Range of products and services of Asda with total number of employees- it provides the retail
goods including groceries, clithings and food items. Asda currently has 180,000 employee's.
Range of products and services by Lidl with total number of employees – It is also a retail firm
providing the goods including groceries, clothings and food items. The number of employee's of
Lidl is 315,000.
Range of products and services by NHS with total number of employees – it product and services
ranges from primary care, in patient care, eye care dentistry etc. It is the largest health care firm
in UK with work force of 1.4 million employee's.
Range of products and services by Oxfam with total number of employees – it works for
providing the proper livelihood, food, shelter, and rights of people. It has approximately .98
million volunteers.
P2 B. Scope and Size of Organisations.
The goals and objectives define the size and scale of operations that business will fulfil.
Every company has certain emphasizes on its operations whether it is profit making, non-profit
or voluntary organisation. The company decides its size and scope based on the activities it
performs. Either a small, medium or micro enterprises works to fulfil an aim which helps in
generating profit and satisfaction.
Micro enterprises are small business units comprising of small capital and few employees
(Hilton and Platt, 2013). These firms add value to the overall economy by enhancing income and
reducing cost of operations. Small enterprises or businesses are operated individually and
incorporates small number of employees thereby generating smaller revenue. The size and scope
of these concerns is small as they are owned privately as proprietorship or corporation. On the
other hand, medium organisations have a moderate scale of operations and an average size
employing minimal employees necessary to carry out operations. They have usually greater
investment of capital which generates higher revenue (Gouldson and Sullivan, 2013).

The Asda and Lidl has a large size of business concern generating revenue in millions by
providing groceries and merchandise to customers through in store and online facilities. Being a
large organisation it has a huge scale of operations which is carried out with the help of
employees thereby integrating business functions as well (Hubka and Eder, 2012). Both NHS
and Oxfam have a single priority of helping the society through providing healthcare services
and education to all irrespective of their financial status. They operate on a larger scale
performing services for the people.
Market share:
The term marker share refers to a particular portion which has been grabbed by a
particular company or in other words loyal customers of a company residing in a particular
market is known as market share. Asda incorporates around 17.5% of total market share and is
among the four big supermarket stores. Being one of the leading grocery and merchandise store
the company earns a net total income of £800 million in 2016 thereby employing 160,000
employees all over (Grundvåg, Larsen and Young, 2013). Lidl has grabbed 7.5 % market with a
huge brand image and its positioning as a discounted supermarket. The NHS and Oxfam
generally contribute to economy by minimal market capture.
Profit share:
Being a large organisation the company shares profits from top management to all
workers in a valuable proportion (Iskanius, Page and Anbuudayasankar, 2010). The revenue of
£40 million recently was paid as staff salaries as well as a portion of it was invested in new

P3 Organisation structures and functions on the basis of different factors
On the basis of functionality, there is multiple variation of the organisations that operates
in the market. Thus, to handle the better share of the market, these organisations play a very
crucial and vital role as per the needs and demands of the company. The organisational structure
is the setup or framework of an organisation according to its functioning and capabilities.
Effective following of organisational structure will help the firm to have high productivity and
functional effectiveness to perform the business operations.
Some different organisations on the basis of scope are:
a) On basis of profitability
For profit organisation: These are the organisations that will work for the overall
functionality to gain a better profit margin and meet better handling of business
operations that operates in private sector. They are basically owned by single individual
or group and don't have any sort of collaboration with the governmental or public bodies.
Although they are regulated by state, it doesn't share the profit with government. This
organisation primarily works in fashion, retail or technology sector (Schaltegger and

functionality. To improve the standard of living of people’s life. Such organisation works
in medical or social care sector. For example, NHS has a matrix structure that will help in

requirements of the clients and stakeholders in a better way. It helps in better execution of
skills and knowledge. It will also help in better interlinking of the organisational

organisational level. But the work process will be segregated and will be divided into
multiple departments which requires to be in regular coordination with each other in
order to avoid any negative impact.
On the basis of size and scope: On the basis of size and scope the organisations are of
following types:
Micro business enterprises: This consists of the low scale of operations, that are been
taken for the effective growth of organisation. These are usually owned by a single
individual who will look after the business operation. The profit margin is limited and is
utilized for the growth of the enterprise. Also, the area of operation is limited to local
level (Sodeyfi, 2016).
Small and medium level enterprises: This are bigger in scope and operational capacity
as compared to the micro level but are smaller than the large scale industries. This may
be owned by a single individual or a group of people and may be operational on the local
or the international level, depending on the functionality. This helps in meeting the needs
and demands of the users and helps it to gain sustainability. They consist of the largest
number of employee's and generate big number of jobs, supporting the financial growth
of the company.

Large enterprises: Such firms have the high level of operational capacity and are owned
in either collaboration or in partnership. These organisations may or may not base on the
SME's for the gaining of employee's and raw material and will help the firm to produce
the major products and services. They generate high amount of revenue which is been
shared among the stakeholders of the firm.
b) Complexities of transnational, international and global organisation structures
Besides this, the international, transnational, multinational and global firms also operate
in the market, adding to the complexities and high level of the operations. They are as follows:
International firm: While the international firms primarily work for import export
of goods and services, MNC's coordinate with the countries to lay their offices
and get the employee's on the local level to outsource their business. The
international firms are operational in more than one country.
Global firm: The global companies lay emphasis on cost efficiency, productivity
and volume generation. The product uses the same coordinated process to
manufacture different products and services. One, central firm makes the global
strategies for the firm.
Transnational Firm: Transnational firms are the most complex. The transitional
organisations invest in other companies, have a central decision making policy
and R & D to develop the products and services. They have a cost effectiveness
and utilize the available resources in a better way. They also lower the labour cost
and develop deep cultural understanding by generating jobs.
