Introduction
Every person is entitled to have the same rights and protections under the law.
However, society treats some of the social groups in a discriminatory manner.
Social discrimination may define as sustained inequality among individuals based
on religion, disability, illness, sexual orientation or any other characteristics
(Bhugra, 2016). Society usually discriminates against those social groups who are
different and do not fit under standard structure carries by that particular society.
People face discrimination at many places and areas of life such as during their
schooling, employment or seeking any other rights that are usually confirmed
under laws. The motive behind development and presentation of this report is to
gain an understating over the issue of unlawful discrimination, the manner in
which it influences some people that belongs to particular social group and rights
confirmed under the law to prevent such discrimination.
The social group selected for the discussion here are heterosexual, gay, lesbian or
bisexual people (LGBT). The area of discrimination selected for the study is unfair
dismissal at the workplace. To discuss the definition of unlawful dismissal this is to
state that, unfair dismissal is when an employer dismisses the employee in a
harsh, unreasonable, and unjust manner. The situation is very common in the UK
where people belonging to the LGBT community often get dismissed from
employment when employers get to know about their sexual orientation. It is a
dangerous state where people have to leave their employment due to their sexual
orientation and the same is considered as unlawful dismissal for the purpose of
the Employment Rights Act 1996, which is further discussed in this report. Other
