1BUSINESS COMMUNICATION
Introduction
Reflective practice has been progressively applied across varied disciplines which entail
individual and behavioural change, such as education, nursing, psychology as well as social
work. In the domain of business disciplines, reflective practice has been specifically applied in
the field of management studies. Authors have argued that reflexive practice efficiently aids
students to associate knowledge with practice and further develop a great sense of ethical
management. It further enables them to make self-judgement from an ethical standpoint.
Additionally to the individual benefits, Moshiri and Cardon (2014) have shed light on the
importance of value reflective practice for shared decision-making as well as organisational
change. Even though reflective practice has been applied in the management learning, is yet to
be intrinsically incorporated in the curriculum of broader business education. In my wide-
ranging Business Communication course supervised by my lecturer Ms. Catherine Lewis and
tutor Mr. Ajay Kumar, I have acquired ideas of the way varied effective business management
skills and strategies tend to serve decisive role in the success of any business. It is highly
essential to note the way diverse topics explored in the course namely oral communication,
group communication, organizational communication, interpersonal communication along with
creative and report writing and social media handling have improved my level of understanding
as a learner. The following report aims to evaluate my understanding of this course through my
personal reflection of two of the vital topics covered in this course namely oral and group
communication.
Importance of Oral and Group Communication in my course
Communications has become increasingly imperative for the continuation as well as
endurance of organizations. According to Wixome et al. (2014), smooth and effective

communication process of creating and sharing ideas, sharing business strategies, disseminating
information, facts, data, among the employees in order to attain a common understanding has
been seen as highly critical for majority of employers in recent times. Thus, communication has
become a key to the directing function of management. Reports of Moshiri and Cardon (2014)
have revealed that currently managers and leaders have been emphasizing on oral
communication as it provides personal importance to the whole business. Moreover, any conflict
resolution process will not be achievable in the absence of oral communication unless managers
or supervisors verbally share their opinions to the personnel in a persuasive tone. According to
Valenzano III, Wallace and Morreale (2014), while demand of documented communication
distribution from the managerial level to workforce has been increasing, there still lies an
importance of oral communication in the organizational sector. However, while delving into this
particular topic I have learned about certain critical barriers in the process of oral
communication. Woolworths at this stage has been taken as a suitable example by me for
illustrating the importance of oral communication. As in Woolworths 2% of all employees
comprise of regular access to workplace email and intranet, the majority employee
communications take place face to face or audio visually. Face to face or oral communications
are primarily conducted on a formal and informal basis in the company
(Woolworthsgroup.com.au 2019). A monthly CEO communications meeting at Woolworths’
Norwest Support Office offers employees an opportunity to play a part in a question and answer
session with the CEO, Brad Banducci. To my understanding, certain factors related to
organizational structure mainly rules and regulations, power, authority relationships tends to
pose challenges to the process of effective communication among employees. Furthermore,

organizations constituting highly centralized pattern often condense the enthusiasm level of its
employees to participate in liberated communication process.
On the other hand, acquiring knowledge of group communication has helped me to
identify that the achievement of a team or group in any organization has great reliance on the
way group members direct their actions in a proficient manner. Conversely, coordination can be
complex when group members dynamically tend to adapt their managerial, supervisory as well
as communication skills along with planning strategies. Research paper of scholars, whom I have
studies in this course have anticipated that teams which establish universal ground in relation to
the objects and locations in the business setting, perform more proficiently comparatively to the
other groups which show incompetence in doing the same. For example, Rasiah (2014) have
noted that speakers in a group exhibiting high receptiveness to their group members by
constantly looking for affirmation of the delivered message being comprehended or that
performed action has been effectively accomplished. Thus, the receptive co-workers tend to
create new dialog moves which indicate proper understanding.

Group Report Writing
Group report writing has been one of the standard assignments in my business
communication program. During several lectures I have learnt how writing an effective business
report has been identified as an indispensable skill for conversing ideas in the business
environment. With the group of five members, we initiated our group assignment. As this
particular assignment has addressed specific issue have typically bespoken when a decision
needs to be made, there emerged certain amount of conflict among the group members which led
us come to a decision of having a group leader who will efficiently show other associates how

they have interpreted their findings. However, while dealing with report writing assignment we
have realized that significant amount of communication between these groups has been spent on
clarifying the actions of co-group associates and further regulating activities than focusing on
content and ideas. Thus, in order to attain success in this assignment we have extracted ideas
from lectures given by Ms Catherine and Mr Kumar on proficiently strategizing plan which will
help in reducing the risks associated with recognizing varied writing tasks and proficiently
distributing those tasks among group members, proper persuasion of individual idea generation
and understanding regulations for document management, conversing ideas and most essentially
managing conflicts. However, I have gathered the understanding that with proper development of
a reliable and trustworthy climate, any group member will be able to successfully attain
constructive criticism without becoming defensive. Thus according to authors, a productive way
of nurturing a reliable relation and circumvent frustration is to clarify at the beginning of the
assignment that all documents undergo a review process.
Individual essay writing
Writing has been something which I found immensely challenging. As individually
writing essays involves critical thinking which entails a determined and reflective analysis in
order to reach conclusions, it has posed severe challenges to me in analysing arguments and
positions which may have been hypothesized in receiving them to expand the arguments through
methodical approach. The business communication learners in this course have been provided
with 4 different subject areas with varied submission date. The primary purpose of this task has
been to assess our understanding and knowledge by assessing claims, investigations in addition
to detailed examples along with the conclusions we have drawn concerning the topics explored
in the course. However, one of the major challenges I encountered is identify areas where to

draw purposeful debate with diverse points of view which will be comparable to my chosen
position and the positions which have been refuting the claims I have been positioning.. During
this particular assignment, I have delved in academic business reports, literature in addition to
seminar sessions which have been essentially designed in order to learners to engage in such a
dialogue. However at the end, these served as significant openings for me to understand,
successfully reflect, inquire as well as evaluate and further to assess the point of views and
helped to improve my areas of weaknesses. Moreover, the books, journals and articles my
supervisors have recommended throughout this course have aided me to understand certain
major issues which I have referred to these within my own argument I will provide in my next
assignments.
Presentation
According to Mayfield, Mayfield and Sharbrough III (2015), presentation has emerged as
a comparatively lately developed form of interactive communication. The growing demand of
presentation in business world in current times has developed this way of communicating ideas
as a highly decisive factor for all employers operating in this competitive business environment.
Furthermore, in the view of authors, speeches, tone and presentations have become fundamental
part of business transactions and dealings. Thus the competence to produce a comprehensive and
convinced speech along with effectual presentation tends to offer great worth to a professional or
any individual associated with the world of business (Jackson 2014). At the initial stage of this
assignment, I failed to develop confidence regarding the appropriate choice of words, suitable
use of jargon, confidence of language, presentation technique, audience analysis in addition to
such other concerns which have been highly significant in involving with and engaging the
audience with whom I will be dealing. Even though I completed this assignment on a successful

note, there were certain areas where I shifted from the concept or area of interest due to lack of
participative manner.
Reflective Journal
Reflection has develop into a catchphrase in the domain of academic as well as
professional literature, and due to composition of wide range of reflective journals, learners
engaged in specialized degree programs have been given to focus on reflecting their own
experiences in order to review as well as improve their performance. This particular assignment
has been highly critical for me to achieve the desired outcome of this course. Critically delving
into several studies of scholars regarding reflective journals, I have gathered the information that
reflective journals primarily focus on personal records of learning experiences faced by students.
According to Moshiri and Cardon (2014) students writing style for journals can be informal and
must incorporate their own understanding perceptions and events experience by them in their
own language. These factors have led me to read several reflective theories on cycles in order to
deliver a comprehensive and interesting reflective journal. Wixome et al. (2014) have stated that
reflecting primarily focus on the cyclical process where recording and individuals thoughts
primarily results to the enhancement and insights. Communication has been playing a highly
diseases role in all aspects of the business in recent times.
Theory Support in practical life
Delving into the business communication course has not only helped me to improve my
efficiency and understand range of unforeseen problems which tends to occur in every business it
has improved my understanding that achievement of any business project is primarily dependent
upon the ability of employees to successfully collaborate in which effective business
communication is the key to successful team performance. Prior to the starting of this particular

course, I had this understanding that communication either in the form of oral or group only
plays an important role in understanding communication between suppliers and buyers. Ms
Catherine, while exploring this particular topic on group and oral communication in business has
shed light on the way business enterprises have been becoming globalised in order to expand
their customer base. She further has put emphasis on the way business and innovation primarily
develops when employees are enthused to convey their opinions and proposes and creative ideas
regarding any project. She mentioned about the speech of Apple's CEO, Steve job which has
been delivered by introducing Mac book in the market. Such an example has made me realize
that while considering a successful launch of any new product defective and confident
communication or verbal presentation play an integral role in the rapid success an expansion of
the new product to the market in addition to the strategies which will be employed by the sales
team of the company and how it will be obtained by the target market (Moshiri and Cardon
2014).
Conclusion
Hence to conclude, it is important to note that effective and comprehensive verbal
presentation primarily leads to a successful business communication base and aid managers and
leaders to attain the desired outcome. Through the examples of notable leaders of renowned
organisations, I have gained knowledge of improving my communication skills and strategic
only outline plans to base my opinions and ideas in front of diverse range of audiences. In
addition to this, the business communication course and especially the two topics have helped
me to realize the efficacy of team performance and group activities while accomplishing any
given goals in an organisation. However even while performing within a group and effective
communication is essentially required to successfully deliver ideas, disseminate information,

receive criticisms and successfully motivate other team members thus helping the organisation to
