This article discusses the barriers to effective communication and provides strategies to overcome them. It emphasizes the importance of cultural awareness in cross-cultural communication.

Communication refers to act of conveying information
from one entity to another entity or a group with use of
mutually understood science, symbols and language. It
is often seen that there are a number of effective barriers
to communication.
It is often seen that there are a number of effective barriers to
communication. These barriers make it difficult for the receiver to
receive the message and decoded. Regardless of the type which is
used for communication such as verbal, non-verbal or written it is
often seen that communication is not effective and it can put
people into risk. Some of the barriers to communication are:
Dissatisfaction: It is often seen that if one is unhappy and lost
interest in their job they find it difficult to communicate as they
don’t want it. This barrier is a most difficult barrier to overcome
as it requires changing of psychological thinking of people.
Inability to listen to others: Active listening is one of the
important parts of communication and there are people who do
not have listening skills and only want to speak. This creates a
huge barrier in effective communication.
Lack of transparency: Trust is an important factor in order to
communicate properly. If someone believes that the speaker is
holding back they will be anxious and speculate the results
without even communicating or listening to the speaker properly.
Communication styles: It is often seen that every person have
their own communication style however not every listener

Cultural differences and language:
Cultural differences in language are an
important factor of communication. It is
often seen that people in different culture
use different signs and forms of
communication. This is the reason why
culture and language is often a barrier in
communication. There are different words
which have different meaning in different
cultures which is creating a barrier in
communication.

Ways to overcome barriers of communication
There are a number of ways in which an individual can effectively make sure
that the barriers to communication or overcome. They required following a
number of strategies as mentioned below:
 It is necessary to check whether the place and time to communicate with
the other person is accurate or not. The quality of information
communicated usually depends upon place in time.
 It is necessary for the communicator to be clear and use the language that
listeners understand. Using a language that is not the listener’s language
would create barrier in communication.
 And while communicating it is very necessary to respect the listeners
desire to communicate. If one of the person involved in communication
does not want to communicate an effective communication cannot be
carried on between them.
 While communication it is also very necessary to acknowledge any
emotional responses. If the speaker is not taking into care about the
emotional responses of listener and effective communication cannot be
formed between these two.
Importance of cultural awareness
Cultural awareness is very important because when one is interacting in cross
culture lack of awareness often leads to bad or poor decisions. Culture awareness is
necessary in order to communicate and collaborate successfully when any cross-
cultural encounter takes place. It helps in increasing communication skills and also
is valuable for professional aspect. A thorough understanding of local culture is
necessity while communicating with people in different culture verbally or
nonverbally.
