Session 5- Corporate Social Responsibility
Pre-seminar 5
Corporate social responsibility refers to the various functions and activities of
organizations related to socially beneficial initiatives. Corporations are providing much more
importance to socially productive work as this can provide much better interactions between
people and organizations. In the current corporate scenarios CSR is being increasingly referred to
as the sustainability initiatives that can balance the environmental requirements with the
developmental requirements of the organization. CSR also has a significant link with gaining
competitive advantage. In the modern era organizations have repeatedly come under scrutiny and
negative media imaging due to unethical behaviors like misuse of cheap labor and labor rights.
This has made it necessary that the organizations take essential care towards maintaining their
CSR activities. Hence, corporate social responsibilities can also be defined as initiatives that are
important towards maintaining favorable images of organizations towards their essential
stakeholders. The activities of organization that promotes their humanistic and society oriented
values can create a model for efficient management of functions of organizations. It goes on to
promote the more socially productive values of organizations.

the false information that are sometimes provided by organizations, stating that their products are
environmentally more effective than they actually are.
Post-Seminar 5
The thinking that CSR initiatives cannot be affected by any significant issues were
greatly affected after the session. Effective understanding was generated after the sessions about
the various definitions of CSR. It was confirmed that CSR initiatives are growing and being
affected by various forms of mismanagement at the same time. Some of the questions that were
answered were how CSR can be made better in the future and the treatment of CSR as an actual
organizational function. Improving the prospects of CSR was one of the questions that remained
unanswered. I will need to investigate further how CSR could be made a highly distinguished
organizational function rather than a directive principle of organizations. I believe that
organization working in CSR initiatives can be given a benefit of doubt till they are not engaging
in gross misconduct of any kind. Organizations need this in order to derive further motivation for
the work that they engage in.

Session 6- Shared Value Creation and Innovation
Pre-seminar 6
There are various key issues in regards to shared value creation and innovation that need
to be covered through the seminar. The capitalist system has come under question by several
environmentalists and similar organizations. Value creation and the approaches of value creation
mainly concern short-term profitable performances. It is important to understand that the
functions of the various organizations are increasingly being questioned on the basis of their
impact on the society and the environment. Value creation has thus, become a difficult aspect in
the current business environmental scenario. In the middle of the debate regarding the ethical
operation of businesses companies are coming up with solutions that address both the
environmental concerns and the profitability concerns. As an example Dow Chemicals, have
started the harvest of Nexera canola and sunflower seeds. The purely organic harvest is used for
promoting healthier cooking oils among the people. It is important to note that modern
enterprises are focusing towards finding a social cause for the work that they do. Some of the key
ideas that were historically present focused on the fact that enterprises need to let go of their
profitability in order to contribute towards the society. However, presently these ideas are getting
challenged greatly by the concept of share value in which resources are being treated as
collective property of the community and organization.
Seminar 6
Energy and energy usage is a significant topic of discussion in the light of shared value
creation. Energy is one of the significant factor that concerns both environmental and
organizational contexts. Without proper conservation methods energy cannot be effectively

sustained. This causes further problems concerning the depletion of the resources. Redistribution
approaches are being focused in the present times. The expansions of the total pool of resources
whether social or economic has become very important in the modern times.
Post-seminar 6
This session was very important and challenged by conception of how resources are
utilized and distributed by various organizations and individuals that claim them. It was
confirmed that for the sustainable utilization of resource shared value creation was necessary.
The questions that were answered were in regards to the effective proclamation, allocation and
utilization of resources. It is important to remember that resources are to be utilized in
accordance of the capacity that can satisfy both the demands of the larger organizations and the
involved local communities. The question remains in regards to how further effective steps can
be taken towards ensuring the optimal and sustainable usage of resources. I will go to explore
further the relationship between value creation for produced items and the shared value creation.
In the earlier session I was more closed mined in my perception of sustainability? However, after
the session I now tend to look at sustainability from many essential angles. In the earlier
reflections I was more focused towards improving the existing factors of improvement. Now I
am more innovation focused.

simultaneously there are the positive factors that affect sustainability functions. Businesses
should be measuring and reporting as this would to keep track of the databases that would
contribute towards generating better understanding of the various aspects that concern
sustainability. The exact figures can help to assess the progress of the sustainability functions.
Post-seminar 7
The discussion challenged my thinking that it was very difficult in the modern times to
take part in the sustainability functions. It was confirmed that the sustainability functions are
being taken at both the international governmental and organizational levels. The questions in
relation to how much organizations can contribute to sustainability and the essential parameters
were answered. The question remains that over a period of the next 5 years, how much can
organizations contribute towards sustainability. I would want to know the prospects of joint
government and organizational sustainability exercises. I have been discussing the aspects that
have been derived from the learning with my classmates. Their views have influenced my
thinking and stimulated the areas in relation to the perception of the crucial concepts. Data
provides a strong framework over which further improvement can be made. This bring forwards
a more focused attitude and professional behavior.
