CANADA SINCE CONFEDERATION1
Annotated Bibliography
Dimand, Robert W. "Canada 150: Canadian social scientists and the making of public policy since
confederation." Canadian Public Policy 43, no. 4 (2017): 376-390.
This paper deals with the focus that the social scientists of Canada had during the 1890s.
The social scientists during that period in Canada were quite significant as decision makers, they
are also advisers to the government and they gave out their suggestion through the reports of the
Royal Commission. These scientists operated at both the federal as well at the provincial levels.
The social scientists shaped most of the public discourse because of the influential position that
they had. The Canadian public policy started taking shape one year before the Rebellion of 1837.
The social scientists were the most influential during this period, they are the once who formed
the policies of the government.
The strength of this paper is that it is very thoroughly researched and a lot of documents
have been referred and this research mostly deals with the work that social scientists have done
since the confederation. The historical data that have been used has all been referenced properly
and numerous references were used while doing the research. The weakness of this paper is that
it has limited its research to the role that the social scientists played during that period. Social
scientists were not the only influencers who worked with public policy and helped shape
government rules and regulations. There were others who influenced the making of the public
policies in Canada and these are mentioned by the study. In order for the study to be complete, it
had to talk about the policy makers of the country of Canada.
