ACKNOWLEDGMENT Security systems have been developed just to reduce the crime rates that occur at thehome. Most of these systems, despite their high costs of purchase, lack in certain respect to thedifferent forms of securities needed in the home. Moreover, the use of multi-sensor homesecurity systems is increasing day-by-day due to the rising awareness among people. It features asecurity alert system that incorporate smoke sensors, motion detector sensor as well as doorstatus alter system. Motion detectors can play an integral role in safeguarding home and propertyof an individual. These days, as per the requirements of additional security, majority of peopleare integrating security system from both inside and outside of their homes. At the time of anytype of incident occurs, motion detector will trigger a light. It clearly ensures any type ofmovement at that place. In this regard, present study is motivated by the need to have moreefficient security systems at homes in order to decrease the crime rates as well as any type ofsecurity threat. For this, the case study of Cardiff, UK is taken into consideration. The whole populationof Cardiff is having their different perceptions about the multi-sensor home security systems interms of safeguarding and protection of their lives and property. Further, this research providesan appropriate justification about the use of different multi-sensor home security systems. Multisensor home security systems are the most important assets of people’s life these days. It helpsthem in findings out any type of miss happenings takes place at their owned property in theirabsences. Main controller unit controls the whole system and provide appropriate output to theusers with in terms of detector, light, servers, email etc. These security systems have made iteasier for individuals as well as business class people to keep security of their homes andproperties such as offices, assets, building etc. By incorporating a central monitoring system, allthe sensors are connected to the microcontroller which establishes an alarm and displays a sensorbeing triggered on a seven segment display. In this regard, sample size of users of multi sensor security system is being selected. Inthis regard, sample size of 100 users of Cardiff is being selected. They can give better responseabout the use of different multi sensor security systems as well as fire alarm. It helps inidentifying their perception in terms of security and protection of their lives and homes. Further,it has been concluded that it is very useful in user’s life to implement several home securitysystems. It provides them mental relief and keeps them stress free. The best security system is

one which best suits to home and lifestyle of users. A home security is an investment and withevery investment it is important to determine return. However, multi security systems are verycost effective but it requires huge maintenance costs. There are monthly cost associated with thesecurity systems and alarm monitoring. Table of Content

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION1.1 OverviewHome security systems are used widely and have always been a major considerationwhen living in a house. Due to the increasing crime rates within the countries, it is becomingquite important to incorporate multi-sensor home security systems for the protection of lives andproperty. According to Reeley, Reeley and Ronald (2000) security systems have been developedjust to reduce the crime rates that occur at the home. Most of these systems, despite their highcosts of purchase, lack in certain respect to the different forms of securities needed in the home. Moreover, the use of multi-sensor home security systems is increasing day-by-day due to therising awareness among people. It features a security alert system that incorporate smokesensors, motion detector sensor as well as door status alter system. However, effectiveness ofthese systems is increasing day-by-day with its acceptance by the public. According to Aghajanand Cavallar (2009) motion detector can be defined as a device that detects any moving objectsuch as human being. It automatically performs all the functions and alerts the user from anytype of movement within particular area. For controlling of each of this system, a central monitori.e. microcontroller is provided for the same. It keeps close monitoring of each sensor andmaintains high level of security and protection. There are several positive as well as negativeeffects of using multi-sensor home security systems for the house owners. One of the bestadvantages provided by the companies is interactive monitoring system (Lian, Hsiao and Sung,2013). It allows total access remotely to users through which they can keep close monitoring ofhouse from anywhere at any time from the Internet, smart phone or tablet. It helps the users incontrolling, arming and disarming of systems as well as visualization of real time activity onsystems. According to Valera and Velastin (2005), motion detectors can play an integral role insafeguarding home and property of an individual. These days, as per the requirements ofadditional security, majority of people are integrating security system from both inside andoutside of their homes. At the time of any type of incident occurs, motion detector will trigger alight. It clearly ensures any type of movement at that place. With the help of this monitoringsystem, information is sent to the GSM phone of the house owner in the form of text message. However, this technique is very useful when the owner is not available at the house. There arevarious home surveillance/monitoring systems as well as multi sensor security systems such as1

video cameras, fire alarms, motion sensors, actuators and smoke detectors. These are some of thecommon security systems. However, different alarm zones are assigned with the same whichgives appropriate information about how a security system manages and controls sensors (Lian,Hsiao and Sung, 2013). Different sensors are assigned at different zones and when any of thesensors triggered, the whole system gets informed regarding zone which is under any suspiciousactivity. It helps in detecting unauthorized movement within that area where there has been achange in environmental factors such as smoke detector. These sensors play the most importantrole in alarming the situation and handling the same with full integrity. In this regard, present study is motivated by the need to have more efficient securitysystems at homes in order to decrease the crime rates as well as any type of security threat. Forthis, the case study of Cardiff, UK is taken into consideration. Cardiff is a port city on Southcoasts of Wales and also a county town of the historic county of Glamorga. The wholepopulation of Cardiff is having their different perceptions about the multi-sensor home securitysystems in terms of safeguarding and protection of their lives and property. Further, this researchprovides an appropriate justification about the use of different multi-sensor home securitysystems. 1.2 Rationale of the studyIn present scenario, it has been seen that security is becoming one of the major concerns. It is becoming a major issue to keep protection of lives and property in an appropriate way. Forthe same, people are incorporating multi sensor home security systems at their houses. Throughthis, they can protect their homes with any types of threats and maintain best protection with thesame. Fully controlled digital homes is always been considered as a luxury for rich people. Dueto the increasing crimes and various other natural disasters, people are putting such livelysecurity systems at their homes. The present topic is taken as a major research issue as protection of human life isbecoming more challenging day-by-day. It is essential to have appropriate security systems athome which safeguard the owner against theft, fire disasters etc. Along with this, they are alsothe major reason for protecting the loss of life and property of house members. Due to this, awareness about these systems is increasing these days and majority of people are incorporatingsuch systems at their homes just to secure their lives and property. Increasing sense of securityamong people is another reason of conducting this research as it helps in determining several2
