Introduction
Language is the most important part of communication. It is necessary to ensure people
with whom communication is taking place is done appropriately in order to gain success in any
work, program or purpose. It is important to understand that the world is composed of diverse
cultures with people from different background (Gallois and Giles 2015). It is shameful to see
people are often judged, treated and discriminated based on their cultural background. In a
society in order to carry out specific work, there are several aspects along with the necessary
skill and knowledge related to the specific field that is needed to be considered. In order to work
and provide the best solution to any problem in society, a strong understanding is required
regarding equality, diversity, human rights and responsibilities. Also, factors such as cultural
competence and humility, stigma, labelling and stereotyping and language barriers are significant
in order to understand the way society has some obstacle. The aim of this case study will be to
understand the ways the above mention aspects plays its role in society and the way it can be
resolved. The paper will utilise a case study of a community health centre that communicates
with an area regarding breast cancer and screening. There are certain problems that have arisen
and the case study will be carried out on the same.
Description
A community health centre has produced written leaflets that are based on breast cancer
and screening. However, the leaflets that have printed are in English and the areas it is being
distributed is an area where English is not the first language for a significant number of residents.
Although the health centre was aware of the fact that the recipients may not be able to access the

information, it refused to print in any other language, to provide translation or provide any audio-
visual versions of the leaflets.
In this particular case, there are several factors that are done inappropriately. The people
are not getting the required information and deprived of the knowledge that is essential to them.
The major problem noted here is the language. As discussed above language is indeed a very
crucial part of any program to be successful. The reason for not providing with the necessary
change may involve several causes that are acting as a hindrance in the process. However, it is
important for the health centre to understand that their performance, in this case, have been
inappropriate and against a few of the fundamental laws.
Discussion
Equality: In health and social care policy and practice, the most important factor to
understand, realize and implement before carrying out any project is to gain the idea of equality
(Caplan 2013). It is a contested concept and varies in various ways since there are different
theoretical ways to understand it. Here equality is strongly related to justice. With equality comes
justice and in this case study, it can be observed that people in that specific area are deprived of
justice since they are not receiving equal treatment (Wilson and Marmot 2016). Even though
they are provided with the same materials that have been provided to other people it is unfair, for
they are unable to understand English. Therefore, the absent aspect here is equity. People have
different need and for equity, a fair distribution of resources according to people’s need has to
make for health and wellbeing. In this case, study, when the people are provided with translator
or audiovisual interpretation, they are treated with equity.
