1CASE STUDY ON FAMILY ISSUES
Introduction
The aim of the report is to present the case study of Lewis’s family since it has been
observed from the thorough analysis of the issue that this family is facing one of the challenges
in maintaining a healthy environment within the family. This has also been observed that the
reason for issues faced by the nine-year-old boy, Lewis, is the nature of relationship within his
family due to lack of his mother's care and father's role in his upbringing. With the due course of
the discussion, the significance of structural therapy will be discussed that will contribute to a
better understanding of the issue and their effective remedies.
Introduction
This issue will be analyzed by applying the structural therapy method and the session
with each of the family members. The structural family therapy is the process of therapy pattern
that is applied to the people with family issues. Some of the issues that are considered to be the
source of family issues are mental health (Bernal et al., 2016). There is the number of major and
minor causes dysfunctional family and this paper will be analyzing the nuances of the family
issues from the perspective of a therapist (Carr, 2019). The aim of this therapy is to understand
the pattern of interaction among the family members that creates problems within the families.
This is used in the case of children with a higher risk of being isolated and feeling lost in most of
the situation (Chen et al., 2017). Such situations might occur in the context of a single parent or
the issues between the parents. This therapy was developed in the 1960s by Salvador Minuchin
in order to cater to the needs of troubled youths (Christenson, 2016). In order to understand the
issues a child is challenged with, individual session is organized that is expected to derive

conclusions for further remedies. This therapy is based on the idea that the source of a problem
among children is not within them instead it is within the unit of a family (Colapinto, 2015). It is
required to develop a thorough understanding of the family structure, hierarchy within the family
and understand whether it is rigid and flexible. The rationale for the choice of this therapy is to
understand the issues between the parents and suggest the measures for overcoming the
challenges faced by the child.
At the initial session, it is important to understand the issues that Lewis’s mother is facing.
Hence she was called for the session. After the session was duly conducted, I would like to say
that Lewis’s mother has the past history of the fragmented relationship. Her separation with her
first husband and consumption of alcohol has deteriorated her situation. Moreover, it has been
observed that Anna has undergone a number of incidents of domestic violence. She has also
faced abuse, and this has created indirect pressure on her mind and driven her towards higher
consumption of alcohol. I would also like that she is unable to take care of her child’s
responsibility which has resulted in their protection plan by the NGO's. In addition to this, I
would also like to say that she is suffering from the problem of depression which is resulting in
depression. She is also impacted by less care and affection, and this is one of the reasons for her
not taking enough care of her children. After being asked on why she is not taking proper care of
her child and Lewis' present condition, I realized that the problem lies in her disturbing
relationship with her husband and health issues related to her constant pregnancy. This issue is
more deep-rooted than it appears on the surface. It also appealed to me that she forces Lewis to
share help at the domestic work and it is a result of her long-standing frustration over everything
in her life. Incapable of being in control due to the consumption of alcohol and less care of her
partner has resulted in this deed seated frustration. In answer what has been realized that Anna
