CE 4.1 Information of Project
Project Name: Development of Crescent Bay
Location of the project: DHA Phase 8 Ext, Karachi, Pakistan
Project Duration: December 29th 2014 to January 17th 2015 (Three Weeks)
Organization: Please fill
Role and Designation during the time: Civil Engineer
CE 4.2 Background of the Project
CE 4.2.1 Basic Project’s Characteristics
Crescent Bay is a 75 acre or 3000000 m2 development that featured high and mid rise
towers for both residential as well as commercial usages, a shopping centre and even a 5 star
beachfront hotel in Karachi, Pakistan. The project was launched on May 31, 2006 as a major
part of a US 2.4 billion dollars investment in Pakistan by Emaar properties. The towers would
contain around 4000 residential apartments. I was a part of this project for three weeks as an
intern and have ensured to gain hand on knowledge regarding such development of high rise
buildings. The contractor of this project was Paragon Constructors Pvt Ltd and NESPAK was
the consultant. The project was to feature a hotel at the Northern most part of the property
that is being fronted by a longer stretch of public beach. 4 office towers that are surrounded
by green spaces, plazas and parks provided a tranquil environment. My project supervisor
guided me in understanding the practical knowledge in field. Hence, I have gained practical
knowledge in this project to enhance my experience in field work.

CE 4.2.2 Developed Objectives for the project work
During the project work of Development of Crescent Bay, I had to assist my project
supervisor in the entire project work effectively. Being a civil engineer, I was already
experienced with most of the construction works and hence became successful in executing
the work. I even understood that I need to understand the project objectives, before starting
the work and these are provided below:
To provide a compact and proper design to the Crescent Bay for successful
development.
To feature a 5 star beach front hotel for the client at the northern most tip of the
property that is fronted by a longer stretch of public beach.
To feature 4 office towers that are surrounded by greenery, plazas and parks after
providing a tranquil environment for businesses.
To ensure that safety and security is maintained in the project work by wearing safety
helmet and following safety guidelines for staying away from any type of accident
and injury.
To complete the entire project work of Crescent Bay within estimated budget and
time frame.
To eradicate the existing errors and flaws to make it fault free and effective.
CE 4.2.3 My working area in the project work
I was hired as a civil engineer in this project work of Crescent Bay. I had previous
experiences of executing such projects in my professional life and hence when I got the
opportunity of being a part of such distinct and popular project, I ensured that I am able to
give my 100% to the work. It was already an ongoing work, however I did not face any
difficulty while joining it mid way, because of the high support I have got from my
supervisor. I had to give regular updates to my supervisor regarding drawings, excavation,

straight rotary driller, reverse rotary driller and many more. I had to ensure that my work
experience is being utilized completely.

CE 4.2.5 My main responsibilities and duties throughout this work
To make this project successful, I had to clear each of my doubts regarding
construction projects. I had significant learning experiences from the involvement in this
work. At the project site, I saw drawings on which construction was being done. I even asked
for help from surveyor, wherever I had difficulty in understanding these drawings. I had to
learn about drawings and concept of north direction and grids.

Figure 2: Grids in the project
I even understood the concept of excavation and when I came to the site, I checked
that excavation for plot 7 and 8 have been done. I had to use two effective machines of
straight rotary and reverse rotary. For soil condition, it was responsibility to ensure that the
field test for soil is being executed successfully. Since, the project site was at sea shore, the
soil was not up to the mark and it was not capable of bearing the load of deep foundation
structure. As a result, I executed the soil test properly.
CE 4.3 Distinct Activity in the Work
CE 4.3.1 Comprehending Basic Theory Used in the Project work
In this project work of Development of Crescent Bay, I have used the theoretical
concepts of structural designing for the 5 star hotel that is to be constructed. When I joined
this project work, the piling was continuing and or excavation of piling, I had to use two
effective machines of straight rotary and reverse rotary. To excavate the bore hole for the
pile, straight rotary driller was used and the time taken for drilling this 38m depth was 6 to 7

hours. I also used the reverse rotary drillers for boring the pile, however the entire process
was quite different than the straight rotary. I had to use water in making the bore softer so
that drilling is being done easily. It took around 12 to 14 hours for drilling the 38m bore.
After consulting with the design engineer, I got the idea that we have to use deep
foundation for poor soil strength and hence pile foundation is needed for taking the entire
load on structure. The pile of 34m depth after 4m excavation from ground level was to be
constructed for taking each and every structural load within every plot division of 480 miles.
One pile had the diameter of 1m. Moreover, I had to use secant pile for building the retaining
wall for stopping any type of seepage control. I understood that 1 secant pile comprised of 5
piles, amongst which there were 3 soft piles and 2 hard piles. The depth of these 5 piles was
13m and that of diameter was of 1 m.

CE 4.3.2 Major Engineering skills as well as knowledge applied in this work
I have used my civil engineering skills and knowledge like structural analysis, load
testing, concrete pouring, reinforcement, levelling and formwork and many more. I even used
appropriate software to complete the work. One of my strengths is calculations and I was
successful in providing accurate calculations and simulations in the work.

CE 4.3.3 Execution and Tasks Performed in this work
We had to design the 5 star hotel in a sea facing plot and 4 office towers for our client.
Since the plot was sea facing, the soil condition was not up to the mark and hence it was
needed to select and use steel properly. In the pile cage, I have used 25mm diameter bar and
10mm strips ring. There were 3 segments that constructed a 35m long cage for a pile of 1st
and 2nd segment and the 3rd segment had 24 bars. In the tower, the beams, shear walls and
columns had 25 mm diameter bars. In the slabs, I have used 12mm diameter bars in both
distribution and longitudinal directions. The overlapping in the piles, columns, and shear
walls was because of 60 diameter bars being used. The structure modelling was completed
with the help of a proper software and every structural component was being designed
manually.
The dead loads of concrete and brick wall are as follows:

I have also used punching reinforcement and tendon work after considering the
tendon of 3 strands or 4 strands for making the towers with lighter weight and much more
sustainable so that structural loads are being undertaken successfully. I completed the
dewatering for lowering ground water table to the required depth for precautionary purpose.
We had to use 57 pumps for dewatering through bore hole.

CE 4.3.4 Identified issue with its solution
4.3.4.1 Issue in this work
The main technical difficulty that I had to encounter in this project work was during
providing minimum reinforcement in the spacing of mid span. I was unable to derive the
estimated accurate spacing and hence my project was getting delayed.
4.3.4.2 Solution to Issue
To solve the problem faced in the project work regarding minimum reinforcement, I
decided to recheck my entire calculation of reinforcements and finally was able to get
appropriate results.

For providing minimum reinforcement spacing,
CE 4.3.5 Plan made for giving innovative or creative works
I made a plan to ensure that my work is both innovative and creative by dividing my
responsibilities into small segments. I even took regular follow ups with my supervisor, so
that I do not lag behind the project work under any circumstance.
CE 4.3.6 Work Collaboration
To ensure work collaboration, I regularly took updates from the design engineer and
site engineer. I even visited the site daily to meet all the workers and include their ideas for
better execution of the work.
CE 4.4 Overall Review of the Project
CE 4.4.1 Overview of the Project
I had to complete the entire project work of Crescent Bay by proper learning
experiences that I have gained from drawings, excavation, load testing and many more. There
were three load tests conducted, which include static load test, dynamic load test and
integrated load test. Concrete pouring was also completed in this work.
