INTRODUCTION
Today, health care sectors are dealing with several issues such as lack of resources, lack of
funding, shortage of workforce, little amount of awareness and knowledge of diseases, infections,
illness within population. Hence, these minor issues can impact majorly on health care practitioners
individually (Cleary & Visentin, (2018)). Due to disturbed shift timing and stress in work, these
issues promote a practitioner to deal with lower productivity and vastly effects job performance.
(Lambert,2020) This report may analyse the case study of Toby, who is dealing professional and
personal issues. Moreover, it also covers strategies and recommendations for Toby in order to deal
with issues.
MAIN BODY
Nurses in world wide deals with several ethical issues and challenges due to their shift
timings and long working hours. In the case of Toby, it has been analysed that due to individual's
mental pressure and physical inactivity, the criteria of ethical principles, moral virtues and duties
were are not attained. Also, the code of practice has not been covered by Toby, as he forgot to
provide quality of care and assistance to each patient (Partridge, (2018)). However, it has become
widely complicated for nurses to adjust and organise with integrity amidst the complicated moral
choices as well as pressure that they confront and encounter daily, Toby was not able to manage his
roster and his other commitments and due to his long working hours. Stress of work may also lead
to isolation from family and friends that makes an individual little bit for frustrated which is similar
to Toby.
At present, since the Health care sector is dealing with issues of shortage of nurses in order
to match multifaceted needs and demands of patients (Mullan & Osborne, (2017)). In the case of
Toby, shortage of workforce can be a concrete reason of his long working hour and problem in shift
rotation process. For example, he was unable to provide satisfactory quality of care to Mr
Somersby, not able to give IVAB to Mr. Jones as prescribed by doctor because he was unable to
take rest and healthy sleep and also he could not able to make discharge arrangements. He failed to
provide rest to his body from work that made him frustrated and tired while at work. This
mismanaged pattern of Toby can be considered as irresponsible behaviour in nurse practice and
studies concluded that ethically not appropriate.
Professional issues regarding long working hours along with stress are essential area in
health care department which should be addressed, due to their possible negative impact on each
individual deals with multiple psychological health issues (Giustini & Boulos, (2018)). Thus, it
promotes the risk factors to an individual to overcome with it. This evolves frustration, job

dissatisfaction, trouble in sleeping, lethargic, tired, physical inactivity, social isolation, reduced
productivity, job performance, absenteeism and others. It is well determined that quality and degree
of social interactions within workplace is directly related to physical and mental health of an
individual (Monrouxe & Rees, (2017)). Toby was leading to the social isolation, as he was not able
to go hiking with his friends. In medical filed, practitioners are expected to work and perform their
job role to be on call around the clock.
Through, Medicare studies the data which has been collected by them were based on the
questionnaire that has covered several parameters in order to analyse each issues which are arise
and deal by nurses in their practice (Pun & Slade, (2018)). The survey conducted by authors who
highly aimed on the professional issues which are initiated by personal issues in the nurse
practitioner life (Giustini & Boulos, (2018)). As it can represent that only Toby was not the one
who was unable to provide quality of assistance to each patients but also there more practitioners
who deals with same issues that are impacted by shortage of workforce and issues with shift
rotation in health care field. The results represent that the majority of nurse practitioners in
Australia' hospice, new practitioners deal with higher number of issues in process of adapting
working culture and its timing (Mullan & Osborne, (2017)). Initially it becomes tougher to make
their habits according to their shift culture and on duty calls, but later it becomes habit of nurse
practitioners.
As these barriers lead Toby to deal with frustration and disturbed unsatisfactory
performance. As per the code of practice in Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia (NMBA)
Registered Nurse Practice Standards, in the chosen case of Toby code of ethics were not followed
due to his professionals and personal barriers (Cleary & Visentin, (2018)). The standards conclude
that providing value to quality of care involves accepting the situation and accountability for the
standard of nursing care and promote the well being and consistent fulfilling the demands of
patients. Toby was unable to match criteria.
Additionally, the NMBA standard conclude that nurse practitioners should provide quality of
safe, relevant and responsive assistance to each patients, hence in the case of Toby, forgetful
behaviour is not acceptable in the accordance of NMBA standards. Another standard which is not
covered by Toby, he did not formulated plan for nursing practice (Monrouxe & Rees, (2017)).
Standards state that the it is the responsibility of nurse to develop a plan in nurse practice, in which
nurses can write their daily schedule and check list of individuals.

develop check list and self-monitored time schedule in order to match the criteria of job role which
can make Toby more punctual in his profession. As per the demand of job role is to stay attentive at
work and being responsible for duties which are assigned to them is prior need, and for that, mental
entrancement is compulsory for an individual. The recommendation which can be recommended to
Toby are as follows:
Utilisation of Technology
In order to work in systematic way, Toby should adapt technology based interventions. It can
make work more easier and compact. He can make check list, documents and also set an alarm fro
himself for more benefits. Addition to this, for Toby, he should start making priority list that can
cover his weekly task that should be executed by him (Baker & Cathcart, ((2018)). That can include
the timings of assistance and discharge dates and details of patients that are mandatory for him to
provide. It can helpful for him to be organised and managed. It tends to be beneficial as it can
provide learning and knowledge of when and what cares being provided to patients and what needs
should be fulfilled.(Baker & Cathcart, (2018)).
Team Work Skills
The team work skills considered as effective intervention in managing work together (Topp,
Edelman & Taylor, (2018)). In the case of Toby, the lack of team work sills is observed that can be
also a reason of prevalence of issues. This intervention can help him to establish equality of services
to patients. It can establish coordination and structure to work.
Learning of Stress Management
Learning of stress management can debits potential that foster problem solving and decision
making skills of practitioners (Smith, (2017)). It can help a person to resolve daily life stress while
making appropriate decision in respect of stress. Through this intervention, a practitioners will able
to attain job satisfaction and can improve job performance. Sleeping early or taking proper sleep
and waking up early may beneficial to improve the mental stability and also help to maintain time
for extra curricular activities which can makes an individual more focused and increase willingness
towards given task. Eating healthy diet can also play a major effective role which can promote
positive well being and to stay active. At last, practitioner should start meditation at least two times
in a week, it can help him to mange stressful situation easily and help with his sleep pattern. It is
well known that meditation is a supreme medicine fro stress and a utilizing step for stress
management (Smith, (2017)).

It has been major challenges for nurses to tackle with personal and professional at the same

time and when its get more complicated for a person, an individual may undergo to deal with issues
that are arise due to irresponsible behaviour and under performance of a person. There effective are
interventions and strategies that are considered through number of researchers that are effective and
help in dealing with issues. The intervention may include the job redesign, changes in the culture of
organisation, flexibility in shift timings, learning and knowledge of work life balance frameworks
and policies, improvement firm's communications and so on (Martha & Wambua, 2017). The
strategies are as follows:
To promote resilience
As per the studies, it has been discovered that establishing supporting environment within
workplace can be efficient factor that can promote resilience. It can be player in improving quality
of care and assistance (Wegener & Rocha, (2018)). Supporting environment can promote high
rates of productivity of employees, team work, it can establish trust within workforce. It can help
Toby in many ways. It can improve psychological well being of individuals (Wegener & Rocha,
(2018)).
As per the studies, it has been also considered that the positive work environment that plays
a large and vital role that helps in increasing the ability of promotion of quality of care. It majorly
impacts each thing that is from safety and security of individuals as well as also hep in promoting
the job satisfaction. It establishes empowerment, satisfying as well as elevate the safety factors.
Studies concluded that healthy positive environment, less burden of work and motivation can help
in improving the absenteeism factors of an individuals.

In order to promote the work life balance, the effective intervention that can be used tracking
and monitoring the time is a initial step (Talukder & Khan, 2018)). The second step is to
determining the goal individual that can be achieved by practitioners in given time.
Self-motivation
Self motivation is essential for each nurse practitioners. It beneficial for their self and helps
to stay constant and oriented in respect to their job roles and assigned duties (Talukder & Khan,
2018)). Motivation can be provided by exercises, healthy eating, meditation, leisures activities,
social support and also social interaction in workplace. An individual might feel relaxed, calm and
positive as compared to other days.

Nurses can face multiple challenges in order to provide quality of care and can able to
