Introduction
The policies which are undertaken and executed by the leader of a state determines the
growth level of that particular nation state. In the contemporary globalized world of today, such
policies which are formulated within a country are important from both a domestic angle as well
as from a foreign dimension (Hassan, p 190). The purpose of this paper is to understand the
impact of the changes of the foreign policy of the United States of America under the
administration of Donald Trump. In this respect, the paper lays focus on the issue of Trump’s
policy with regard to Middle East from a diplomatic lens.
Change in diplomacy towards Middle East under Donald Trump
Donald Trump was elected as the President of the United States of America in 2016
(Khodadadi, p 29). After assuming the responsibilities of his office, he decided to change some
of the policies which were so long followed by his predecessors. With regard to the issue of
diplomacy, the United States has always faced opposition in the region of Middle East. Middle
East is one of the most instable land of the world haunted by issues of severe human rights
violation and the growth of terrorist organizations (Pietrzak). The more powerful and stable
nations of the world have sought to bring about some amount of peace and stability in the region
so as to protect the lives and property of the citizens.
However, the administration of Donald Trump was seen to take a more hostile and
affirmative action with regards to their policy of diplomacy in the Middle East region. Trump
appointed Mike Pence as his Vice President who was known to favor the issue of invasion of
Iraq by the troops of the United States of America (Wasiński). Furthermore, he also opposed the
withdrawal of the troops from Afghanistan. This shows that Pence was willing to take a more

militaristic approach to the entire threat of terrorism and the assurance of instillation of a liberal
capitalist economy.
Trump changed his stance with regard to the issue of the Israeli citizens staying in
Palestine. Rather than letting the Jews and the Arab Muslims resolve the issue themselves,
thereby maintaining some amount of democracy, Trump decided to assert himself. His
administration insisted that the Palestinian citizens who were living in Israel had to come out in
support of the state of Israel, otherwise, they would not be able to enjoy any of the benefits
bestowed upon them in the form of citizenship (Louër). To this extent, the administration of
Trump criticized the previous administration of Obama whereby he believed that Obama had
failed to take any assertive and definitive action to resolve the issue of terrorism in Palestine.
This was mainly attributed to the soft diplomatic policies of Obama with raged to Middle Eas
("US Diplomacy In The Middle East Has Failed For Decades | Financial Times")t. As a
consequence, in order to counteract the issues and to ensure the growth of a peaceful Middle
Eastern region, Trump decided to take a more aggressive stance towards the Palestinian question
and the existence of the Jews.
To this extent it needs to be noted that he supported the idea to cease the funding by the
United States of America towards the United Nation Relief and Work Agency ("US Diplomacy

Agency was to provide health care services and education to nearly six million vulnerable and
weak Palestinian refugees. This showed that Trump no longer was interested in ensuring the
development and progress of the people living in Middle East. He took a more practical and
military view to the entire issue and wanted to resolve only the political situation prevailing in
the country.

The foreign policy of diplomacy towards the Middle East has therefore changed
completely under the administration of Donald Trump. His administration relegated the issue of
human rights violation to a secondary position while the threat of terrorism was given more
priority. They were of the opinion that first terrorism needed to be resolved before the social and
cultural dimensions were cared for and reestablished.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it can be observed that the various policies which are undertaken and
executed by the President or leader of a particular nation state has a significant effect on the
extent of development of the concerned country. The decision of Donald Trump to undertake a
more hostile attitude towards the issue in Middle East largely deteriorated the amicable stance
that was so long fostered by the forefathers of the United States.
