7. Sarah is a 12 month old baby in your care and has just started to say the word “doggy”. Her
parents have communicated that she started this at home as they have just got a new puppy.
How can you implement this new interest of Sarah’s into the program and teach Sarah new
words that relate to dogs and/or animals?
Sarah’s interest in puppies and animals can be further enhanced by using other words
and sounds that relate to puppies and other animals. For example, words like woof-
woof and meow can be used to teach the child how dogs and cats make sound. The
child can be encouraged to make similar sounds and relate it to the animals that make
such sounds. In addition, colourful pictures can be used to help Sarah learn about
puppies like what do they eat and what they like.
