Answer the following eight questions and four case studies
Your responses may be recorded or presented in a written format. Written responses for
each answer should be approximately 100 words in length. The written responses may
be presented in narrative or bullet point format.
To answer questions accurately, you may refer to child protection legislation in your
state or territory, other applicable legislation such as the National Quality Standard and
Education and Care Services National Regulations, along with the Belonging, Being and
Becoming – The Early Years Learning Framework, the Early Childhood Australia Code of
Ethics, policies and procedures common to early childhood education and care services,
position descriptions detailing an educator’s duty of care responsibilities, and/or other
sources such as professional readings along with the course textbook and identified key
resources.
Ensure you acknowledge and cite your sources accordingly. This is important whether
you use your own words or quote the author’s words. For more information on
referencing and plagiarism, refer to the ‘Academic reference guide’ in the Student

Short answer questions
1. In your own words, define the term ‘’child abuse’’?
List at last three (3) different types of abuse
Definition of child abuse: child abuse is a sexual, physical, or psychological maltreatment
of a child by parents or caretakers. It includes an act of failure by parent or caretaker
which results in potential or actual harm to the child. It may occur in school, home,
communities etc (Zeanah, 2018).
Types of abuse:
1. Sexual abuse: an adult forcing himself upon a child forming a sexual contact.
2. Psychological abuse: it includes, causing harm to the growth and development of child
by harsh criticism, rude attitude affecting their mental health (Martin, 1982)
3. Physical abuse: It includes all types of phsyical violations such as hitting, beating, biting
burning etc.

2. A child may witness domestic violence at home.
Identify six (6) signs and symptoms that you may observe in an early childhood setting.
1. Possibility of physical abuse when child has unexplained burns, broken bones, bites or
black eyes.
2. Seems frightened of parents or the caretaker and cries when its time to go home
(Gonzalez, 2020)
3. Shows extreme behaviour such as overly demanding or extremely passive and
aggressive.
4. Has attempted suicide and shows a lack of attachment towards parents or caretakers.
5. Possibility of sexual abuse when the child has difficulty in walking or sitting.
6. If the child reports bed wetting and nightmares.
