10:00am
N1 children were in the block corner area.
They were sitting against the wall and the
English teacher was in front of them with
three baskets (Lego blocks, Pipe links,
Click blocks). The teacher divided the
children into 3 groups. Each group has a
different toys basket. Evan chose the Lego
blocks basket. He chose a red Lego block
from the basket and made a tall tower.
Cosco was coming to him and asks “Evan,
can you give me a red color block?” Evan
shared the 2 red blocks. Evan and Cosco
sat down together beside the Lego basket.
10:10am
Evan took 5 red Lego blocks, stood up,
went to the right side block corner area and
sat down with Lyndon. Lyndon was using a
pipe links toys and making a car. Evan said
to Lyndon that he wants to play. Evan sat
down beside Lyndon and he took the 2

the play area, and showed 2 wheels. The

wanted to make a box. Evan said “I fix for
you” and he took the 4 click blocker (2 blue
colors, 1 red color and 1 green color) from

to the right side of block corner. He held the
5 red blocks and sat down beside Lyndon.
He started making the tower again.
10:30am
The English teacher asks children “Time to
keep the toys”. Evan stood up from the
right side corner, took 6 red colour blocks
and put them into the Lego basket.
Evan is obedient and listens to his
elders. He is also organized and
keeps things he has taken back in
their place.
Vygotsky’s theory
According to Vygotsky’s theory of learning through play, the zone of proximal
development is created through play, which is the difference seen between what a
child could and could not do with and without guidance (Vygotsky, 1967), and that
playing is the main source of development of children in early years. During play the
child makes cognitive connections between words and objects, which help them in
reaching their highest cognitive capabilities (Vygotsky, 1967).
In this case, Evan is seen interacting with other children in a positive manner, where
is not unwilling to share toys with his peers. Through his tendencies seen during
play, it can be seen that he is helpful to others and organized in his own work. He is
also obedient to his seniors, such as the teacher. All of these are behavioural traits
seen through playtime and expresses much more about Evan’s tendencies of
communication and cognition than it would have in any other scenario. It is evident
that Evan is well equipped in handling social interactions, with peers and seniors
alike, and this development is clearly visible through his actions taking place in the
block corner.
