1. As a home-based childcarer you must have an understanding of current legislation andregulations. Outline current legislation relevant to the home-based childcarer. There are several laws that are related to home based child carer which are as follows:Children Act 1989 : This act in UK lays down the roles, powers and responsibilities oflocal authorities, courts and parents for safeguarding children against any harm and isconcerned with promotion of child welfare.Children and Young Person Act 2008: This parliamentary act of UK lays down theprovisions which are concerned with delivering great support and high quality care toyoung people and children in child care homes.Sexual offence Act 2003: The objective of this legislation is to protect children fromsexual exploitation at child care homes.Children Act 2004: The act states five major provisions for children that are; mental andphysical health of children , utmost safety of children in child care home, encouragingchildren to be social, providing every facility to children to offer them the greatest joys ofchildhood life and children's economic well being.Child-care Act 2006: This legislation is related to local authorities duties; for improvingthe outcomes of “Every Child Matters” for pre school child; for taking care of children ofworking parents. The act also include provisions for parental information relating to childcare services.2. The regulatory bodies in UK plays a great role in ensuring the safety and development ofchildren. For example, Ofsted is an independent body in country which is responsible forexamining and scrutinizing the educational services being provided to children and youngpeople. This regulating body verifies that young people and children are being look after in awell manner and that they are being protected from all the possible harms. Further, it also checksthat children are not being discriminated in any potential way and ensures that equality prevailsin child care. National Security for the Prevention of Cruelty to children (NPSCC) is a charitableorganization in UK which has the legal power of intervening in the matters if a child is indangerous situation.1

3. Consider the role of regulatory bodies in relation to home-based childcareThe regulatory body plays a crucial role in ensuring a safe and healthy environment forchildren and young people. These are the bodies which scrutinize the activities of the people whoare engaged in home based child care which in turn makes sure that proper procedures arefollowed in providing child care services to children. Legislation facilitates guidelines regardinghow to provide a safe and inclusive environment to young people and children and the regulatorybodies are the way through which effectiveness of such polices and rules are continuouslychecked. A regulating body called Ofsted inspects the areas which reflects the effectiveness ofpolicies and procedures relating how well children and young people are provided the safety andeducational services.4. It is your role and responsibility to ensure that you adhere to health and safety requirementsboth indoors and outdoors to provide a safe and secure environment for children in yourcareRisk is a term which signifies a situation that involves harm or danger. In other words,risk refers to the possibility of any injury, harm or any unwanted circumstance. For example,children are prone to the risks of getting severe injury while playing outdoors, healthcomplications, climbing stairs etc. It is very important to take a balanced approach for managingrisk in order to provide safe working environment to children. It is necessary that children shouldbe exposed to some kind of risks and challenges in order to provide them learning experiencesHowever, this does not mean that children should be exposed to such risks and challenges whichcan put them into severe danger. Such risks must be avoided for the purpose of facilitating asafer environment to them. The balance approach is necessary in the overall development ofchildren, learning experience enhances their capability of understanding the things which couldhurt, their mental health progresses and they become more confident. 5. Child safety is concerned with supervising the child ,creating a safe environment andteaching the child regarding what is safe for them and what is not. There are various waysthrough child's safety could be ensured inside and outside the home. They are as follows: Direct and active supervision:In this type of supervision, a person/adult keeps a check on the activities of pre schoolchildren at all the time. This involves supervision on children when they are indoor , outdoor oreven when they are taking a nap. Indirect supervision for older pre school children:For a child above an age of pre school times, indirect supervision could be exercised.Keeping a check on them in short term intervals is a healthier way of supervising the children ofbelonging to age group of 3-6 years.3
