Introduction
Tobacco abuse is a common aspect now a days among the youth and the middle aged
person despite of gender and this factor would be leading to the chronic diseases such as
cardiovascular (artery blockage, hypertension), respiratory (COPD), different cancers and
others. On this context it can be seen that the tobacco intake by means of smoking is high
among the Australian people aged between 25 to 34 yours and the rate is 25.5 percent among
male and 14.2 percent among the female (The Heart Foundation, 2019). On the other hand it
has been found that the teenagers (15 to 17 years) and also 18 to 24 year olds smoke in a high
rate that is 5.3 percent among male and 2.8 percent among female and also 16.2 percent
among male and 17.3 percent among female respectively (The Heart Foundation, 2019).
According to ABS data in the year 2014 to 2015 the smoking rate among the adults of
the country was 14.5 percent which was lower than 2011 to 2012 which was 16.1 percent
(Abs.gov, 2019). It has been seen that smoking is the primary cause for the morbidity and
mortality rise in Australia. The main reason of such high rate of mortality and morbidity
among the Australian youths is associated with the onset of lethal disease such as lung
cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders (COPD), asthma. As in most of the cases the
youths are unable to detect the symptoms of the diseases among the youths. (Australian
Institute of Health and Welfare, 2019). Hence, it can be seen that smoking is an aspect that
affect the body harshly and despite of decreasing rate of smoking among Australian people it
is still a concern as the rate of smoking is still. The following section will be a proposal for
the research project on the topic of tobacco abuse and the health issues regarding this poor
habit. Along with this, the proposal also discusses about the social media intervention for
reducing the tobacco abuse in the society.

Aim of the Research
Aim of this project is to develop the idea about the factors of tobacco abuse among the
youths of Australia and also the ill effects of this habit. The research project will also help in
the developing an idea about the effective recommendations that will eliminate the habit of
smoking among the people.
 To find out the efficacy of social media intervention in the tobacco abuse.
 To determine the robustness of such social media interventions and to monitor its
outcomes.
Research question
1) Is the social media intervention effective for reducing the tobacco abuse
(Facebook advertising, mobile app)?
2) Is social media interventions robust enough to impact the tobacco use of the
society?
This research questions will help to use the new intervention such as Facebook
advertising, mobile application intervention method to reduce the use of tobacco
among the youths as it is one of the major health concern around the world. So
reduction of this tobacco use in the society will help to improve the public health
concerns around the world along with Australia.
