Introduction – About Cleveland
Hospital
Among the leading academic medical centers of America, is Cleveland Hospital based in the city
of Cleveland, Ohio. The medical institute is readily expanding and intends to improve their
network infrastructure to meet the future network demands of the doctors, nurses and other
medical staff and therefore looking to obtain proposals for their future network of IT equipment
and functions.

Introduction – Network Set Up
The overall infrastructure of Cleveland Hospital is expanding and along the expansion comes a
whole host of new requirements. The network infrastructure of Cleveland Hospital is no
exception. Owing to additional set of requirements for the doctors, nurses or even the data
relating to patients, the hospital is forced to reshape their existing network for accessing of
Internet as well as other internal data.

Problems
Data volumes is increasingly rising. Managing and organizing patient’s data and making them
available to the assigned doctors is often challenging.
Number of networking assets of Cleveland Hospital requiring either internet access or access to
data within their own network is substantially high making it costly to maintain desired network
configurations on regular basis.
Security threat from malware, hackers as also data theft is detrimental for any institute in this
industry

Suggested Network

Objectives
The proposed network layout aims to provide not only the internet access but to also provide
accessibility to all parts of the network.
Use of Wireless LAN (WLAN) to ensure mobility as well as connect more devices locally.
Ensuring minimal cabling specific complexities.
Using comprehensive security applications to provide firewall based protection and
authentication for users of the proposed network.

Challenges
Distribution of the network over 10 regular switches affect the speed of the network. This
requires network administrators to stay vigilant and alert while monitoring the hospital’s
network so that floors exhibiting higher idling times get lesser priority so that network latency
can be improved where they are required.
Regular maintenance of the network is required for institutes like hospitals as they are
responsible for performing critical operations and treating patients.
