Executive Summary
The prime objective of this project is to focus on the cloud computing service providers. In
this assignment, we have taken Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure as the cloud
computing service providers. The assignment deals with the implementations on technology
of the service providers, the business model of the service providers, the client base of these
providers and also two success stories for each of the service providers. Lastly, the paper

1. Introduction
Cloud computing may be stated as the process of using the Internet remotely to store
data, processing of the data and management of the data, whereas not in local server or in
some personal computer (Rittinghouse & Ransome, 2016). It can be referred delivery of the
services related to computing such as storage, databases, analytics, intelligence and many
more via the Internet, which offers innovation, flexibility of resources. This assignment deals
with the innovations implemented by two of the great cloud providers Amazon Web Services
and Microsoft Azure. The key factors that are discussed in the assignment are the successful
business applications generated by the service providers, their relevant business model and
their implementations.
2. Amazon Web Services
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a subordinate of Amazon, which provide platforms
for cloud computing to various governments, companies as well as individuals based on paid
subscription (Amazon 2015). This allows the subscribers varieties of virtual clump of
computers to be available all time over the internet. These computers provide dedicated
browsers and consoles, through which the subscribers can configure, log in as well as use the
virtual systems from anywhere just as if they are accessing the physical computer of their
own.
2.1 Implementations made by AWS
There are unique implementations followed by AWS that led the company to achieve
success amongst the subscribers (Wittig & Wittig, 2015). Those are discussed below.

5CLOUD COMPUTING AND ITS PROVIDERS
Trading Capex: AWS promises the customers that they have to pay only for those computing
resources that they actually use. This enhanced the success as customers can use the provided
facility transparently.
Scale Economy: AWS has acquired a scale of economy that no other company in the market
had achieved by itself, which allows AWS to provide its services at much more lower costs.
Flexible capacity: Prediction of the computing storage capacity for new services is difficult
for many firms. Under provisioning of risks provides a poor experience of the customers. But
in this case AWS provides high level of flexibility in downscaling or up scaling the
computing capacities within a very small time, which provides customers a good experience
using the AWS.
Agility: The cloud computing services provided by the AWS simplifies the development
procedure of the new services and products for the subscribers, which does not worries the
companies about the considerations of infrastructure at the lower level.
Global reach: As AWS has its server present on a global scale, allows the customers to
access the services worldwide without the loss of latency from the servers connection from
any premise location.

2.2 AWS Business Model
Figure 1: AWS Business Model
(Source: Aversa, Haefliger & Reza, 2017)
The business model of the AWS as provided in the above figure can be classified as
the key partners associated with the maintenance and development of the services, the key
activities provided by AWS (Aversa, Haefliger & Reza, 2017). Moreover, the valuable
propositions provided by the AWS, maintaining the customer relationship, the key resources
associated with AWS, the customer friendly cost management structure and the revenue
streams generated by AWS are the strong pillars of the company’s business model.
2.3 The client base of AWS
The client base of AWS lies in a vast area serving both the government as well as
business industries. The significant government partner solutions that uses AWS are SAP
NS2, JHC Technology, Itera, SmartSimple Software and many more. Some private sectors
that use AWS are namely Netflix, BMW, Adobe Systems, Canon and many more.

by AWS to enable the business transformation in a large scale. This company uses 100 of
AWS services, which is driving the company towards innovation across the sectors of chain
supply, data platforms as well as product experiences of the consumer (Web Services, 2019).
2.4.2 2U: This Company runs the virtual campuses on AWS, which helps the
company to manage their data on the cloud-computing platform so as the students as well as
professors can access the same data and interact with each other. This has enhanced the
growth of the company leading it to a successful stage ("2U Case Study - Amazon Web Services
(AWS)", 2019).

3. Microsoft Azure
Microsoft Azure is a kind of service provider in the cloud computing, which is created
by Microsoft (Wilder, 2012). It is mainly used for testing applications, developing
applications, managing applications and to establish the cloud computing services. These
processes are carried out using the data centres that are managed by Microsoft. It supports
various programming languages, frameworks, tools that are Microsoft specific as well as
includes many other third party systems and softwares.
3.1 Implementations made by Microsoft Azure
The great advantages that makes Azure one of the most preferred cloud computing
services are discussed below:
PaaS Potential: Infrastructure management is totally care taken by Microsoft of the Azure
PaaS. This allows the users to put a complete focus on the innovation of the technology.
.Net Functionality: This cloud computing service provider supports the .Net language of
programming, which enhances the optimization of the work with new as well as old
applications.
Security Offerings: Microsoft Azure is designed on the base of the Security Development
phenomenon, which is an assurance process in an industry-leading manner.
Hybrid Solutions: Azure assures seamless data connection across all data centres and to the
cloud publicly.
Soft Learning Curve: Microsoft Azure enhances to utilize the technologies that are used in
several businesses. It provides a gentler learning curve than any other cloud computing
service providers.

(Source: Copeland, 2017)
The business model of the Microsoft Azure can be stated using two models: - ISV Model and
SI Model as provided in the above figure.
3.3 The client bases of Microsoft Azure
The significant government partner solutions that uses Azure are Federal agencies,
State and Local agencies as well as US Department of Defense. Xerox, Boeing, EBay, LG as
well as Dell are some private business sectors that uses Microsoft Azure.
3.4 Success Story
3.4.1 Johnson Controls: This Company is one of the top providers of building
technologies as well as solutions. The company uses the GLAS smart technology, which is
based on the Windows 10 IoT operating system (Azure, 2019). When the smart technology is
connected to Azure, the GLAS provides its owners to access remotely via web and using
mobile applications. This gave the subscribers ease of access to the data cloud that resulted in
the growth of the Company.

3.4.2 Polycom: Polycom is a leading video and voice service providers throughout the
United States. Using Microsoft Azure the Company reduced its development time by half,
also deployed its services globally, and instantly provided services to the subscribers
(Polycom, 2019). This led the company to grow fast as well as a trustworthy company among
the subscribers.
4. Conclusion
Therefore, it can deduced that Cloud Computing is one of the basic needs to enhance
the growth of the companies now days. Different companies use different cloud computing
service providers but the vision of all the companies are the same that is to grow its services
and products in a progressive manner and to reach globally to their respective clients or
customers. The most successful cloud computing service provider globally is the Amazon
Web Services and the third being the Microsoft Azure. Thus, it can be concluded that the
companies should focus on the Cloud Computing technology taking the help of the platforms
like AWS and Microsoft Azure to enhance the growth and to reach out the customers on a
global level.
