Cognitive development in toddlerhood
Cognitive development is the manner in which our comprehension and thinking of the world
around us change as we grow (Bjorklund, & Causey, 2017). It is the emergence of the ability to
think to comprehend since it comprises of; the use of language to think, conceptual thinking,
information processing and the use of sense to perceive and integrate information. At this stage,
the toddler begins to understand how tone and emotions vary in different communication. They
even start to imitate them as you used on a daily basis. The toddler also starts to understand how
numbers work, for example, knowing that when you add one to a group of things, the number
goes up.
These developments impact on the activities of daily living in various ways. This is major
because the toddlers don't understand how all concepts fit together despite learning a huge
amount of things. This, therefore, may interfere with their activities of daily living, for example,
toileting. The toddler will understand that things flush down the toilet, however, they may not
realize the fact that they themselves or something valuable may flush down the toilet as well.
The major milestones expected at this age include; child began to pretend to play with others
(Worthington, & van, 2016)., begin to sort shapes, begin to solve a math problem and also
become more aware of the mathematical sequence when spoken. Moreover, the child starts to
compare things using relevant words, such as, for example, bigger, little and even outstanding.
The child also gets to enjoy creative movements.
To enhance healthy living and proper development at this stage, the child should be encouraged
and appreciated for any effort they make during the period
