INSTRUCTIONS
1. Identify the Dialectical Tensions operating in the situations below, taking time to explain the
conflicting feelings and thoughts in each: connection vs. autonomy, openness vs. privacy,
predictability vs. novelty.
2. Then select one or more of the eight strategies for Managing Dialectical Tensions(denial,
disorientation, alternation, segmentation, balance, integration, recalibration, and
reaffirmation)that you believe would be most beneficial to the relationship, and explain how the
relationship would deal with the dialectical tension under these circumstances.
3. Finally describe dialectical tensions at work in your own relationships and label and explain the
strategies that you use to deal with them.

Example: Jacqueline, nineteen,
and her mother, Melanie, have
become good friends over the past
few years. Jacqueline now has a
serious boyfriend and spends less
time talking to her mother.
