COMMUNICATION 2
Introduction
Interpersonal communication conflict occurs when two people engage in the conflict
with each other due to different cultural, social perspectives or different viewpoints.
Interpersonal communication conflicts can occur in professionals and as well as in personal
life. However, the above definition highlights that interpersonal communication involves two
or more people who are interdependent on each other to some degree and this
interdependency forms a bond between them(Burgoon, Guerrero & Floyd, 2016). It is also
noticed that interpersonal communication conflicts can be seen even between the people who
address a strong bond. In this report, there will be a discussion about the barriers of effective
communication, long term communication strategies for outperforming communication
conflicts to the majority of the degree, etc.

Summary of the issue
When I was in the 12th standard, our class teacher assigned me and my friend Joseph
(I am changing the name of my friend for maintaining his privacy)in a leadership project. The
deadline of the project was only 15days and we both immediately start writing the
assignment. In part B of the assignment we both had to mutually decide about the leadership
style that is suitable for the new health care institute. I put my suggestion that we should
mention the autocratic leadership trait but Joseph was not agreed with my suggestion because
he wants to make the assignment on the democratic leadership trait. This issue arises
arguments and conflicts between us. As a result, we both said to our teacher that we want to
change our partner. At that time, I did not understand his perspective, now after becoming
familiar with the communication conflicts norms, I can understand that neither he was wrong
nor I was wrong at that time. It was just an interpersonal communication conflict based upon
our different perspective.
Barriers of effective communication
As there are many barriers of the effective communication process and these barriers
can put adverse effective at any stage of the communication(DeVito, 2019). It has been
noticed that leaders and managers in an organization always analyze specific communication
barriers that hinder their team's performance as barriers cause distorted and it arises the risk
of time wastage. Below are the barriers of communication:
The use of jargon:
Over-complicated and unfamiliar terms cause a major barrier in communication. In
professional culture, when people encounter with unfamiliar terms then it is noticed
that they hesitate to ask for the meaning because they feel it may put a negative
impact on their reputation(Kim, et. al., 2017).

Cultural differences:
Cultural difference also causes many communication barriers because two people or
groups fail to understand the perspective of each other(Kim, et. al., 2017).
Taboos – emotional barriers:
This implies that many people fail to express their emotions on certain topics because
according the current discussing topic is completely off limits. Such as: topic of
sexuality, politics, etc(Main, Walle, Kho & Halpern, 2017).
Difference in perception and viewpoint: When people or groups who have different
view points then also it acts as the communication barrier. For overcoming this
barrier, every organization make a set of rules for their employees so that they can
work effectively and efficiently but in reality, it is noticed that even after making
effective working guidelines still employees in organization deals with the
communication barrier due to the difference in perception and viewpoint(Nesi,
Widman, Choukas‐Bradley &Prinstein, 2017).
Language differences and the difficulty in understanding unfamiliar accents:
Under this barrier, it jumps the people on the different conclusions and they assume
different answers rather then what is actually being said by the other
person(Wachsmuth, Jowett & Harwood, 2018).
Leadership characteristics that absent or evident to the communication conflict
Listening is the powerful skills: The fundamental leader's trait that is beneficial for
overcoming communication conflict is that leaders should follow the concept of
listening because when a leader pays close attention on the words on his/her team
members then it minimizes the conflicts. Thus, it can be said that listening is a
powerful leadership trait that can reduce communication conflicts(Wilson, et. al.,
2017).

COMMUNICATION 5
Communicating relentlessly: This characteristic implies that leaders should
communicate information, their thoughts, ideas, etc. so among their team members so
that their team members can effectively understand their views. According to theory
of leadership, a leader should not only communicate his/her words but his/her words
should be effectively understood by their team members in order to successfully
conduct the operations(Wachsmuth, Jowett & Harwood, 2018).
Illustrating through examples and stories: According to various researchers a
successful leader deal with the communication barrier and conflicts by creating better
understanding among their team members through examples and various stories. This
characteristic of the leadership is linked with creating a picture in the subconscious
mind of their team members for better understanding(Nesi, Widman, Choukas‐
Bradley &Prinstein, 2017).
Long term communication strategies that can be used to establish interpersonal
relationships for fostering safe and quality patient care
To establish better interpersonal communication for fostering safe and quality patient
care it is suggested that nurses or doctors or healthcare staff should show their interest in
patient's queries, by mentioning for showing interest it means healthcare staff should pay
close attention over the query of the patients. Apart from this, healthcare staff should also try
to keep aside their judgemental mentality because their own mental judgment can create a
different opinion about the person. Moreover, healthcare and nursing staff should also talk
with the guardians of the patients in order to know their cultural values(Main, Walle, Kho &
Halpern, 2017).
