INTRODUCTION
Business communication is a process of sharing ideas and information between
individual within and outside an organization (Karale., 2020). Effective business communication
is all about how management and employees interact each other to reach organizational goals.
University of Greenwich is one of the top university of UK, located in London and Kent, UK.
This report will highlight two leaflets related to the common challenges and barriers of
communication, and also includes some effective strategies for overcoming such barriers.
Moreover, this report also illustrated some theories of organizational communication and
evaluate some barriers preventing. This report will also involve the strategies and their
implementation to overcome communication barriers.

Physical barriers: It is a
natural condition that take
action as a barrier or
challenge in the process of
communication in sending
message or information
from senders to the receiver.
They are the often tangible
boundaries or obstacles that

the students attend their
class in online mode so it
saves their time in travelling

Culture barriers: It occurs

platform. Culture can
impact how an individual
communicate verbally
through the phrases, culture
specific, words between two
or more people. For
example, students in
pandemic attend online
classes so now they are
nervous to attend offline
classes with the large
numbers of students from
various backgrounds.
Lack of trust and
transparency: It is very
difficult to communicate
thing when there is lack of
trust and transparency. For
example, of a company
employee believes that the
company or manager holds
something back, then they
will be anxious and some
employees will speculate as
a result, it will create more
difficult for company and
employees to communicate
effectively.

General theories of the organizational communication
Organizational communication can be defined as a form and channels of communication
in which company such as non-profits, corporate , government bodies engage, involving both
external communication and internal communication (Downs, DeWine, and Greenbaum., 2020).
External communication means communication between a company and their stakeholders
whereas internal communication means communication that occur within the organization. Good
organization communication helps company to builds trust with the people within the
organization which boosts engagement. Some more benefits of organization communication such
as it acts as fuels to innovation, improve productivity, improve public relation, builds culture of
trust and teamwork etc. There are some organizational communication theories as follows:
Weber's classic organizational theory: this theory has six principle such as rules based
management, impersonal, a formal hierarchical structure, up focused or in focused mission,
employment based on the technical qualification and functional speciality organization. This is
basic for systematic formation of the organization and it is design to make sure economy
effectiveness and efficiency (Kvachev., 2019). This theory holds that company have clearly
defied responsibilities and roles, thus communication is clear, hierarchical and structured. There
is no gap or scope in messages being sent from the top-level of management and hence company
have fixed machine. In this structure the company tasks must be divided between the employees.
This creates formal communication between the employees. All rules, regulation, behaviours and
decision are recorded in this type of theory. This communication and information will share in
terms of chain of command so every thing is accounted and documented.
Taylor's scientific management theory: scientific management is a production centered
perspective and management oriented of organization communication. Taylor believed that the
reasons of organization failed was due to fact that there is lacked successful systematic
management. Taylor did not feel a need to create rapport between workers, rather, Taylor felt
that the managers needed to communicate in the proper manner and clear cut manner.
Deetz's managerialism theory: the evolution of company models and structure over the years
has caused theories that reflect the changing in company norms. This theory is attempt to define
how the organization control and organization communication happens in the businesses where

classical notions are return with acknowledgement of the economical and political interest ans
the need to represent as well and give voice to such diverse interest.
Acceptance theory of authority: this theory authority state that a manager is has authority over
the company low-level depends on the desire of the workers to accept the rights to give orders to
them and comply with them (Metcalfe., 2019). This theory focuses on chain of command, they
suggest that the effective chain of command make communication effective.
Estimate the barriers preventing students from returning to the campus
Financial barriers: Standard of living frequently depends on amount of money an individual
has to invest and spend. Many activities which can improve likes standard of living like going to
college, buying a house etc. when high costs make an activity difficult to afford that it is
considered as a financial barrier. Financial barriers can prevent the students from being up to
attend lectures and colleges (Sutcliffe, and Condliffe., 2020). During the pandemic many the
classes are done in online mode and when university plan to restart face to face classes but some
students are not want to do classes in offline mode as they live far away and do not want to travel
and spent long time to attend the classes.
Administration barriers : The students get frustrated when they do not know when and how to
contact teacher or mentor. They may get discouraged if they do not know the progress in their
courses or of their expectation are not effectively communicated.
Motivational barriers : students may face distraction when completing online courses, or they
feel comfortable in online mode education, so they are less motivate to come back to campus.
This is one of the major barriers that University face.
Lack of experience: Student are nervous about how they communicate in large classes with
other students and there are some culture differences, so they feel less motivated and less interest
to come back to campus. Many times it seen as, when teacher asks some question in online mode
then the student don't reply to the teacher but now they have to reply and attend in proper
manner, so they feel nervous (Sánchez., de Haro-Rodríguez, and Martínez., 2019).
Listening barriers: In the online mode student feel comfortable they use their phone during the
lecture. They attend the classes in Zoom application, so they just use the mute function and do
what ever they want. Therefore, when the classes are sifted in offline mode so many students

arriving late to the campus and leaving early and as they find zoom easy, so they face such
barriers.
Social barriers: It is important to create community in online classes. Students may become
disengaged or feel low confidence to get interact with their peers and instructor.
Physical barriers: Many students live far away from the campus and do not want to return to
attend lecture. So they not feel motivated to attend classes because travelling in United Kingdom
is very expensive, and they are worriers abut finance commitment.
The strategies that university has implemented to overcome such barriers
There are different ways by which university can overcome these barriers. For finance
barriers university can adopt scholarships scheme of money allow to student in higher education
so it reduces or cover financial barriers that is cost of books, tuition fees, travelling expenses etc.
The universities can give their student opportunities of working such as internships or part tome
jobs etc. so, with their study they can earn as well. The universities can give training about how
students can manage their finances. They also teach about saving and return on investment
concept and motivate them to saving concept. Universities can connect their students with each
other and helps them in feel like they are a part of community of scholars. Social media can be
helpful to engage students in their content. So the student share their resources related to the
courses informally by using social media platform. University creates an introductory activity
which helps them to connect their students with each one and make them feel that they are part
of community of scholars. They use induction programmes so each and every student know their
class mate, so they easily connected with them. For example, in a class student tell about them so
its easily way to start conversion. Social media can be helpful to engage students in their content,
so they can share their resources easily.
University use strategy in which they provide direction in many ways, be concise and
clear with their expectation and direction. And university provide their direction in many ways ,
such as by online courses and email etc. university provide timely and effective feedback, so
student know their performance and if they are not satisfied then they can take corrective action
easily. University offers different opportunities which attract student to come on campus.
University also implement motivational theory which help in motivating student to come college
and be feel normal and comfortable (Wigfield., and et.al., 2019). They also offer different

activities such as dance, singing, sports etc. which can be acts as to motivated them to come
collage, this also help student to learn new things and make their expertise. For example, if
student have interest in sports then they can take part in sport activity, and learn new skills and
get an opportunity of play at national level, international level. Give them opportunity of learning
new courses which have great impact on their success, so they feel interested and take part.
CONCLUSION
From the above report it concluded that business communication is a process of sharing
data and information among employees within and outside the company. This report includes
two leaflets that highlights common barriers and challenges to effective communication and
some strategics for overcoming such barriers. Moreover, this report discuss few theories of
organizational communication such as Weber's classic organizational theory and Taylor's
scientific management theory etc. This report also includes some barriers preventing students
from returning to the campus such as listening barriers, financial barriers, physical barriers, lack
of common experience, administration barriers, motivational barriers etc. and some strategics
which university has implemented to overcome these barriers.
