Introduction:
Communication include exchange of information and views. Communication can be in the
form of verbal, non-verbal and written. Communication is an important aspect in the nursing
practice which facilitate development of therapeutic relationship. Aim of this essay is to
discuss the positive aspects of communication styles, strengths of communication styles,
characteristics necessary to strengthen the effective communication style, identifying the
troubles for strengthening communication style, measures which can be taken to address the
trouble, communication styles with least effectiveness, challenges encountered during daily
communications and measures which can be taken to address challenges in daily
communication.
Question 1 and 2
Healthcare professionals should communicate with the people with different education levels
and disciplines. Hence, it is essential to communicate with these diverse people through
different communication styles. I can effectively communicate with diverse people through
different communication styles such as verbal, paraverbal, body language and personal space.
I can communicate with a person with specific communication style based on the specific
traits of the person. Different communication styles such as direct, spirited, considerate and
systematic require different characteristics such as good English, effective thinking ability,
good expressions and ability to understand, respectively (Subramanian, 2017). Good English
and strong voice can be helpful in keeping my audience attention towards me and to gain
their confidence in my words. I possess all these characteristics. In emergency cases, it is
necessary to communicate instantaneously. Hence, effective thinking ability can be beneficial
in communicating relevant information in emergency cases. Biggest strengths of my
communication are my voice and intensity of talking which can be helpful in disseminating
the information in the effective manner. I can use eye contact, gesturing and touch in an
effective manner for establishing positive communication. Good expressions, eye contact,
gesturing and touch helped in establishing positive therapeutic communication in patients’
group such as paediatrics, older patients and patients with psychological disorders. These
characteristics also helped me in providing person centred care to the patients. Grooming and
touch to the small children improved the duration of hospital stay and medication
consumption. I could understand exact problems of patients because I had very good ability
to understand others. It helped me in planning relevant intervention as early as possible. I

communicated to outside experts and organisations through good English and effective
thinking ability which helped in providing additional healthcare services to the patients at out
hospital (Bientzle et al., 2017).
Question 3
I would like to attain effective communication workshops for improving good characteristics
necessary for good communication. I should attend healthcare related communication
workshops for improvement in the strengths necessary for effective communication. I should
attend the communication workshop on the regular basis until, improvement in strengths
which are necessary for good communication (O'Toole, 2016). Improving access to care
plans and electronic records can be helpful in disseminating information to other healthcare
professionals; hence, effective, fast and convenient care can be provided to the patients.
Specialised accessories such monitors in heart patients can save life of patients through
alerting physician through alarm. Health monitoring alarms are one of the recent
developments in ICTs (Ito et al., 2017; Singh and Sittig, 2016).
Question 4
Even though, I can communicate effectively in different styles; direct communication is my
dominant style. However, few of the aspects of the direct communication can be troublesome
during one-to-one communication with the patients. Poor listener and impatient with the
others are the two aspects of the direct communication which can be troublesome during one-
to-one communication to the patients. I wish to complete my job on emergency basis; hence,
there is possibility that I would take decision about patient care merely based on reports
without listening concerns of the patient. Does not heed advice and likes to argue are the
characteristics of direct communication which can be troublesome in team working. I have
practice of arguing to prove right decision; however, it might not be liked by other team
members. Hence, it would affect the work harmony in the group. Moreover, on few
occasions, I would not seek and heed advice from others about care of my patients. Hence, it
might lead to the misunderstanding among team members (Sacks et al., 2015; O'Toole,
2016).
Question 5
I would like to minimise the poor listening characteristic through establishing effective
personal relationship with the patients. Establishing this bond with patients might make me

listen to their concerns in more positive manner. I would like minimise impatient with others
through taking decisions with calm and composed mindset without making any type of hurry.
I would like to minimise troublesome characteristic such as argument with others through
establishing relaxed pace and giving myself and others space in building trust on each others.
Question 6
I can communicate through considerate style of communication more effectively in
comparison to the other communication style. I can communicate with considerate style in
effective manner because I possess most of the characteristics of considerate communication
such as precise talking, brief handshake, and controlled movement. I possess good
counselling ability, can use supportive language, build trust, values relationship, care for
others and tends to be reliable and steady. Since, I possess most of the traits necessary for
effective communication; I can communicate in effective manner through considerate
communication skills. All the traits of the considerate communication are useful in healthcare
sector because in healthcare sector communication should be established with diverse group
of people. Hence, I can effectively communicate with considerate communication style
(Heinke, 2014).
Question 7
It would not be possible for me to communicate effectively through spirited communication
style. It would not be possible for me to follow spirited communication style effectively
because I am not well versed with most of the traits necessary for spirited communication. I
can perform activities solely based on the generalisation and persuasiveness. Acts performed
through generalisation and persuasiveness would not give targeted outcome (Cameron, 2009).
Moreover, loud tones are not appropriate in healthcare facilities and I personally is not fond
of using loud tones either with patients or healthcare team members. Animated clues could be
better option for communication; however, I am not well versed with use of animated clues
for communication. Lots of body movement and personal slogans in the workplace are the
requirements of the spirited communication; however, I usually avoid these traits during
communication. Spirited communication incorporates focus on the big picture and building
on strong alliances which are not my favourite aspects (Deb et al., 2009).

Multiple aspects can be considered as challenges for effective communication in the
healthcare facility. Following are few challenges which can make it difficult for effective
communication in healthcare facility: language problems, jargons, acronyms, health issues,
stress, emotional difficulties, environmental problems, misinterpretation and aggression
(Adams et al., 2017). Language problem can occur with uneducated and low socioeconomic
class patients. I would address this problem through taking assistance of communicator to
convey correct message to patient. Jargon, which is difficulty in understanding medical
terminologies by the patients is another challenge because it would be difficult for me to
convey accurate health condition to the patients. There are chances that patients might
become scary due to unknown medical terminologies. This challenge can be effectively
addressed by explaining the meaning of medical terminologies which would be helpful in
feeling relaxed to the patients. Acronym is also related to jargons (Grant, 2015). Health issue
is another challenge which can become serious challenge during communication with patients
because it would be difficult to communicate with patients with impaired health. People with
impaired health might not be able to communicate normally. Moreover, patients might be
stressed due to diseased condition which might affect his/her communication ability. Stressed
person might misinterpret or misunderstood the communication. Moreover, person under
stress might be able to speak and listen efficiently. Hence, I would like to communicate with
family members to convey clinical condition of patient. Emotional and environmental issues
also affect communication in the healthcare setting. Person with emotional issues might not
be able to listen clearly due to preoccupied mind. In cases of emotional issues, I would like to
improve their emotional status for effective communication (Foà et al., 2017). Environmental
factors such as croweded ward might affect communication. Hence, I would like to
communicate with the person in the isolated place. Aggression or unpleasant behaviour might
affect the communication; hence, I would like to communicate in the relaxed mood (Land et
al., 2017).
Question 10
Use of specific communication style is important for people with specific culture. People of
the specific cultural group shares beliefs, behaviour and shared and learned values. Culture
and communication are the two inseparable aspects. Communication explores the viewpoint
of specific cultural group. Communication plays important role in shaping specific culture
and people of specific culture group learn through communication. Culture affects
communication through different constraints such as cognitive constraint, behaviour

constraint and emotional constraint (Paternotte et al., 2015). Cognitive constraint is
applicable to cultures which do not accept the new information. Behaviour constraint is
applicable to the cultures which have its own rules for verbal and nonverbal communication.
Emotional constraint varies according to different cultures because every culture has its own
way of expressing emotions. People from some of the cultures might yell or cry during
communication. Hence, varied communication styles should be used for communication with
people from different cultures (Kublin, 2014).
Conclusion:
Communication is a complex process and it requires essential styles for effective
communication. I can effectively communicate with verbal, paraverbal, body language and
personal space. I developed different characteristics for communicating effectively in
different communication styles such as direct, spirited, considerate and systematic. Direct
communication is my dominant style. My most effective communication style is considerate
communication style. I cannot communicate effectively through spirited communication
style. I encountered multiple challenges for effective communication; however, I can address
these challenges effectively.
