The nursing fraternity is one of the most sensitive fields especially due to the fact that the client
is ever in constant need for attention and good care. Each of these strategies is always aimed at
ensuring the patients have the best experience and hence get better with respect to the health
challenge they could be going through. In order to treat the patients appropriately, there the
inevitable need to obtain as much information as possible from them (Burnard & Gill, 2010).
This phase requires the incorporation of the most effective and relevant communication skills.
Mr. Mendez case provides one of those unique scenarios in which nurses are required to apply
distinct professionalism when communicating with the patients. The fact that the client only
speaks one language already constructs a barrier. However, this has effectively been countered
by the presence of the daughter who acts as the interpreter.
The best approach in this case would be the incorporation of active listening and show of
compassion as the vital communication skills. The patient is visibly irritated about his prior
experience (Duffy, 2015). The delay might have led to a couple more complications. The best
procedure would involve applying the communication skills which would ensure the patient
becomes as relaxed as possible, calm and composed for the preliminary examinations. As a
result, listening to the patient vent about his frustration and trying to console them to calm down
would be step in the process. Through the daughter, Mr. Mendez can bas assured that all shall be
well and that he needs to calm down to enhance the best results during the examinations. In
addition to show of compassion and active listening, use of non verbal approaches would be
another strategy to enhance the effective end of the process (Erickson & Blazer-Riley, 2012).
Getting the blood pressure and temperature might not need a lot of verbal statement hence going
ahead to perform the tests once the patient is calm enough would be a proper step.
