This unit introduces students to the theoretical foundations of community services work. Students will learn the structure, purpose and nature of the Australian community services framework. It will examine how community services evolved, the many contexts and settings, including policies, theories and practices in the field. Students will gain a deeper understanding of critical concepts that have shaped and continue to shape attitudes and service provision of community services. These include concepts of welfare, power, disempowerment, equity, social and political activism and community development.
