Comparative Methodology Critique

This critique analysis analyzes two studies based on the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of the methodologies employed in the study. The first study is an investigative one, on the level of freedom on the victims whose restriction is under the total control institution. The second research aimed at establishing the level of sensitivity on fashion in considering the personality traits of the individuals. Both studies have elements of effectiveness and ineffectiveness. The mix approach critique is employed to analyze both studies.

Introduction
In the critique analysis, two studies are analyzed based on the effectiveness and ineffectiveness
of the studies depending on the methodologies employed in the study. The first study is an
investigative one, on the level of freedom on the victims whose restriction is under the total
control institution. In this regard, a prison is used as an area of research. The second research
aimed at establishing the level of sensitivity on fashion in considering the personality traits of the
individuals.
Brief Summary of the article first article “consumption of Restriction in a Total Control

In the text “consumption of Restriction in a Total Control Institution: Participatory Action
Research in a Maximum Security Prison” is a research that targeted at offering an investigation
on the choices the consumers have especially in a totally restricted environment. In this regard, a
prison was utilized to give the best reflection of the research. The study was conducted within
the period of over eighteen months using the approach of participatory research in order to get
the point straight from the source as researchers draw meaningful conclusions. The research
targeted a population of 4000 men. Most of the men were the uneducated therefore they could
not give the required information about the research but a few of them had been enrolled in a
degree program in a private institution to boost their knowledge. The authors start the essay by
complaining that despite the fact that prisoners should feel more comfortable while in prison, but
the fact remains clear that in the institution the condition to them is miserable therefore

undergoing the process of rehabilitation is not achievable. The prison has been turned to be a
place of torture. The population which was used in the research reduced due to illiteracy level.
The researchers were to check for the scenarios in the prison and draw the conclusion whether in
indeed they have choices or they don’t have (Ronald, Justine, Michael, & Gramercy, 2015, p.
156). The presence of the researchers in the institution automatically couldn’t give the best
outcomes since the officers in charge would loosen the extent of torturing on seeing them in the
institution. In the researcher, various instances are contradictory to us and therefore we see the
research as an ineffective and to other occasions being effective. The critique will, therefore,
target at portraying both sides of effectiveness and ineffectiveness thus a mixed critique as
follows:
The elements of ineffectiveness
To begin with, at the start of the research we see contradictory information on the target
population of 4000 men to be investigated upon, and then later the researcher goes to the prison
of 3300 men. These numbers narrow down to a few men who have been enrolled in college.
They, therefore, cannot give the true reflection of the situation the prion thus making the research
to be ineffective. Furthermore based on the issue of some prisoners enrolling for studies clearly
indicates that they have choices in the prison that’s why they have refused the option offered and
decided to study (Ronald, Justine, Michael, & Gramercy, 2015, p. 157). This ignites the fact the
fact to ask where the torture is. The torture that we see the authors mentioned at the start of the
essay “…But damn, it doesn’t have to be this miserable”. Additionally, the research is an
ineffective one since it targeted institutions that are under total restriction such that the
consumers have no choice to make, but the institution chosen, the consumers have a say to some

directions thus choosing to enroll for the studies. In the text we find that most of the prisoners
have done major crimes like for instance killing, they, therefore, have been imprisoned for life.
The question arises to the fact that why see the sense of rehabilitating a life imprisoned
individual? This is out of order. The researcher expects impossible scenarios to happen. In this
regard, the research is an ineffective one. The researchers feel that what is happening to the
prisoners at first should not be happening to them. The total torture, yet these people are not
good, they are murderers. Expecting to treat murderers like normal human beings are impossible
therefore the researchers lack factual information to think in this direction. Another confusing
element is when some of the prisoners have decided to seek rehabilitation from outside the
prison by enrolling for studies. The aspect is confusing to understand since one cannot
distinguish this whether it is free through sought forcefully or it is a rehabilitation process
granting for such options in the institution (Ronald, Justine, Michael, & Gramercy, 2015, p. 156).
The research is, therefore, effective.
The elements of effectiveness
However, the research has portrayed the various aspects of effectiveness, for instance,
pertaining lack of freedom, it points out that the scenario entails restriction from the normal
environment forcefully, lack of ones’ choice in the market and the individual leaving prion
totally different having gone through the great extent of torture. The life of prisoners is
uncomfortable, they are mistreated, their belongings were taken away, and they are isolated from
others as well as their families and their previous lifestyles have taken away. This indeed proves
that the research area is an area of total restrictions to the victims. Additionally, victims lack
freedom due to the following aspects being deprived off, for instance, the victims have no money

to use, they have no medical cover, and they do not have vacations. They are subjected to great
penalties when refused to work, they are under total solitary confinement, and they lose crucial
programs in their lives as well as parole. These elements are great torture to the humans,
therefore, the pollution indeed is the right one (Ronald, Justine, Michael, & Gramercy, 2015, p.
159). In regarding the aspect of narrowing the population down to the literate ones, was the best
approach based on the purposive sampling targeting at only the population that could give the
needed information for the research. If the researcher would have used all the population whose
majority are illiterate and have psychological disorders, the responses would be ineffective
therefore wrong results of the research would have been obtained. The study had based on this
fact makes the research to be effective clearly portraying the level of torture, lack of freedom and
no clear rehabilitation programs offered. Hence, the research is effective.
The brief summary of the Study
In the second study, the research made by Riza Casidy “ Discovering Consumer Personality
Clusters in Prestige Sensitivity and Fashion Consciousness Context” targeted at establishing the
differences in the personalities of the consumers in regarding the element of consciousness in
fashion and sensitivity in prestige. The research in order of realizing this a total population of
251 undergraduates was utilized in giving the true reflection of the research in Australia. The
population was sampled out and the questionnaires were administered to the group of which only
100 were randomly taken from the samples to give a reflection of the actual information.
Additionally, the research utilized cluster analysis in assessing the findings based on the validity
and reliability of the information. The MANOVA approach was used too, targeting at getting the
differences in the sensitivity of fashion in relation to their prestige that existed among the

different personal clusters. The questionnaires were utilized depending on the personality traits
regarding the big five personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience,
agreeableness, and consciousness). The research having both the elements of effectiveness and
ineffectiveness, the mix approach critique will be employed as well. Analysis of the data was
done based on the sensitivity analysis. Four clusters were utilized in helping to analyze the data
(Riza, 2012, p. 294).
Elements of ineffectiveness based on the methodology
The research was conducted in Australia sampling out 251 students. The number selected cannot
give a true reflection of the information not only in Australia but also the entire world. Using
these samples to conclude the fact that it is a representation of Australia and at the same time
relate to the whole world lack merit. The research based on this perspective can be regarded to be
ineffective. Additionally, on regarding the element of analyzing the data, out of the 251 samples
of the research only 100 samples of the data were analyzed, despite the fact that these were based
on the clusters, the number is still low which affects the merit of the information due to the
geographical regions the information was to represent .Thus it is clear that the utilization of
random sampling in analyzing data leads to ineffectiveness. Furthermore, on data analysis, the
four clusters are used yet the personality traits are the Big Five (Riza, 2012, p. 291). The
question arises to why four clusters. The method does not expand the issue with clarity.
Employment of the questionnaires is disadvantageous such that one cannot the truthfulness and
the believability of the responses given. There is a great likelihood that the respondents can give
insincere responses and no time to seek for clarity. Interviews could be appropriate since
clarification would have been sought as well as gauging the truthfulness of the responses given.

People come from varied cultures, such aspects will affect their perception of fashion other than
based on the personality traits, leaving this aspect out, therefore, contributes to the
ineffectiveness of the research.
The effectiveness of the research
The author recognizes the fact that selecting students as the population of the research will give
the best reflection for the study. It is due to the fact that the element of fashion exists in high
learning institution that has come from the various culture with the different view of the fashion
depending on the sensitivity to consciousness. The sample is effective when regarding the aspect
literacy where all the students in the University know how to read and write therefore they will
respond to the questions accordingly especially to those who are afraid of face to face
communication have an avenue to write comprehensively about the subject under study. In
addition, the scientific approach in the analyzing the respondents was utilized, ensuring that the
responses given were classified depending on the personality traits of an individual. The
approach was effective and gave an easier way to go in analyzing the responses. The kinds of
feedbacks were well understood. The research is effective since the study ensured that the
reliability and validity of the data were enhanced which ensured that the right approaches were
employed in the research in order to come up with the right information. In achieving the best
outcomes composite reliability was employed with the way the respondents are open to the
experience. The study highly considered the element of professionalism ensuring that effective
research methods were well conducted, analysis done well and the conclusion of the research
was clearly drawn making the research to be effective. In addition, prestige sensitivity was well
adhered to during the analysis in the research giving the true reflection. The test was undertaken

using the cluster approach ensuring that the true sample of the data was represented therefore
correct analysis leading to the meaningful conclusions were reached at. The research, therefore,
has a great extent of effectiveness.
Conclusion
To sum up, it is clear that both the article have the elements of effectiveness and ineffectiveness.
This ineffectiveness arises when it comes to the methodology used such that the researchers have
selected a right methodology but the sample represented cannot give a true reflection of the
whole research. For example, Riza Casidy’s study utilized the population of the undergraduate
students who came from Australia. These populations cannot give a true reflection of the world
at large.
