Comparison
The two outcomes have various similarities. Both agree that building trust with a patient
is important. They agree that the nurse should have done a better job in communication and
should have tried to establish trust with the patient. Another point they both agree on is the fact
that the nurse should have been culturally sensitive. The words she used when pointing out that
the patient was aboriginal did not seem insensitive and offensive.
Another way the two outcomes are similar is that they point out the need to ask questions
and give the patient a chance to answer. Research shows that proper communication can
encourage a patient to speak out and provide more information about themselves and their
medical history (Burgener, 2017). The nurse seemed to ask questions continuously without
taking a breath or pausing to hear what Erika had to say.
The expert report, unlike the student report, points out one thing the nurse did right. She
went ahead and consulted with a colleague which shows she is genuinely concerned about the
patient. It also shows that the nurse considered ways she could improve care for the patient. The
expert report also suggests that improved care leads to improved safety. The patient was less
likely to self-discharge.
Reflection on learning
 The expert response consolidates with my previous knowledge in that establishing trust
with a patient is critical for the provision of quality care.
 I also agree with the expert response in that listening to a patient is central to their
wellbeing

 The expert response challenges my previous knowledge by approving that Robyn did one
thing right. She mentions that Robyn put herself in a position to listen to critique from her
co-worker which put her in a difficult position and showed she cared for the patient. I
have learned that it is important to listen to critique in the nursing practice and that it is
good to ask for advice when faced with difficulty.
 The expert mentions that the nurse is not entirely responsible for a patient’s self-
discharge (Adams, 2018). As she puts it, the isn’t much one can do when you talk to a
patient and they still insist on leaving. It was my opinion that a nurse should do
everything in their power to stop self-discharge. However, as I have learned, that decision
ultimately belongs to the patient.
 Another thing that I have learned from the expert response is that when a patient self-
discharges, a nurse has a duty of care. One needs to provide them with advice and
encourage them to follow up with medication and appointments to help them get better
even away from the healthcare facility.
Impact on practice
There are several things I have learned from the expert’s outcomes that will impact my
future practice. I am in a better position to understand the importance of effective
communication with patients. Creating trust with a patient is essential (Ozaras & Abaan, 2016).
This will help them feel more at ease and open up when asked questions regarding their health or
medical history. I will ensure in my future practice that I create rapport with patients to ensure
that I provide the best quality of care.

I will also be better in my future practice in that I will be sensitive to a patient’s
background. Discriminating against aboriginal patients for instance when assessing their health
can cause distrust putting the safety of the patient at risk. This discrimination as seen in Erika’s
case may be one of the reasons why aboriginal people may prefer to avoid health institutions
(Scenario, 2018).
One strategy I will employ in my future practice is ensuring the provision of a care
environment that is culturally competent and safe. This will involve eradicating stereotypes and
racism in the care environment which are factors that may negatively influence the patient
wellbeing. Helping a patient like Erika feel safe and unjudged due to her culture or background
will put her at ease and be more willing to follow up on appointments and medication. This will
also increase the morale of families of patients like Erika to visit a health institution.
Another strategy will involve clear and effective communication (Vermeir, et al., 2015).
As I have learned, the perception of a patient in regards to the quality of care provided to them is
judged greatly based on the interactions they have with the healthcare personnel. It is therefore
important to create a patient-based relationship which will, in turn, lead to improved
communication. I will employ the patient-centred care model which highlights the fundamental
features of effective healthcare communication. Such features include reflective listening, open-
ended questions, preferences, and values of a patient as well as responding to the unique needs of
patients through empathy (Maria J. Santana, 2017). As from the scenario, the use of these
communication skills by Robyn could have ensured that Erika responded in a better manner and
would have prevented self-discharge (Vermeir, et al., 2015).
