INTRODUCTION
Leadership and management are said to be the two elements that play an important
contributory role in the provision of quality care in the nursing sector. Both leaders and
managers have different roles and responsibilities, but they work for a common goal, i.e. to
pull out better outcomes (Johnson, 2017). In fact, leadership can be understood as an art in
which a person leads his subordinates to meet the team’s goals and objectives. With good
leadership approach, a right working culture is developed within teams to manage and meet
clients’ expectations (Ciulla, 2014). This assignment will outline various theories of
leadership that promote effective nursing and enable nursing team to provide a differentiated
quality service to clients. The assignment will also discuss the link between appropriate style
of leadership and compassionate care and its impact on health service delivery.
TASK
The presence of capable leaders in nursing sector will result in an improved team
performance and achieve better results in terms of service delivery (Collinson, (2014). With
effective leadership in place, it can be argued that the nursing team can serve their patients
better and share a great bond with them. It has been recognized that nursing sector plays a
vital role in the modern era as it is responsible in delivering value services to clients with the
health institution. A leader in an organisation is provided with roles to form right decisions
and making sure that both employees and clients are satisfied in terms of environment and
culture (Heifetz and Linsky, 2017). Leaders in nursing sector should have good interacting
skills through which they can effectively issue out instructions and assign tasks to their team
mates. According to Goleman, (2017), health policies are more effective when there are
effective leaders to implement them and to create better conditions for clinical team. This
may have the effect of motivating the clinical members to work in an effective and efficient
way.
As indicated by Heifetz and Linsky, (2017), planning, organizing, directing,
controlling and coordinating are some of the factors that come under management. Proper
implementation of these factors may aid in achieving the organizational goals in a given time.
It has been established that effective management can aid in hitting desired targets in an
efficient manner. The performance level of a team can be enhanced if proper training is
provided by management in a clinical department. Along with this, skill level will be apt and
generate additional confidence and motivation to the team to take up responsibilities to

provide effective health care to patients (Goleman, 2017). As proposed by Johnson, (2017),
influencing subordinates or others by using interpersonal skills in order to achieve desired
goals is one of the qualities in leadership and must be possessed by every leader in the
nursing sector since it will help them in making the employees work in more effective and
efficient manner. Motivating, supporting, directing and moral boosting are some of the styles
that a good leader exhibit in order to attain personal and team goals and objectives.
Innovations like introduction of new types of technology should also be brought in by
management in their operations to ensure the nursing or clinical team adapt to the ever
changing situations in the health sector.
Ward, (2016) asserts that a group of individuals should be handled in an effective and
efficient manner so that they can perform their work in a proper way. and this can be done
through various strategies and approaches of the leader. A leader should give clear vision and
mission to their subordinates and set realistic, achievable and measurable goals so that they
can provide good guidance to its subordinates and make them show correct path as well. This
will guide the working team to achieve the set goals. Performance review meetings should
also be held from time to time to ensure measures are put in place to meet the set goals.
Through this, the leaders will get the idea of performance doe by their followers and if there
is any chance of improvement then it will also be conducted in a proper manner. It also
influences in achieving goals because it helps in assuring that activities are going on in a
proper manner and it will lead to achievement of goals and objectives as well. Providing
directions to clinical team members to work in a smarter way help them in delivering quality
services to clients or patients. Energising and empowering clinical squad is fundamental in
nursing sector and it helps in making them more responsible while treating a patient.
Bringing up a competition is also a duty of a leader in the clinical department through which
they can improve productivity of the team at the workplace. This will also impact the
followers in a positive manner as they will get the opportunities to increase their knowledge
as well as productivity of themselves through which they can attain good results.
Culture considers the beliefs and assumptions, which help in determining the manner
in which team members interact with each other and provide health care services to the
patients (Nettina, Msn, and Nettina, 2013). It simply defines the manner in which operations
are carried out within the environment. The development of ideal culture at an institution
requires appropriate leadership, which assures that creation and communication is being
carried out in the right manner. It is extremely important to build a culture which involves
compassion and care within nursing teams. This is because, although there is a huge amount

of science to the health practice, it is still necessary to have empathy in the professionals who
are responsible for providing health services to patients.
The justification for the same is that compassion has been identified as one of the
crucial element which assures that right clinical practice could be achieved. It is stated to be
one of the major factors which assure that a patient is catered with the right care and
attention. The inculcation of compassion and caring in service provision will make huge
differences in the holistic development of a patient along with focusing on satisfaction and
content in relation to services, which are offered to the patient (Collinson, 2014).
According to Ray, (2012), treating patients with compassion means that the patients
are being dealt with in a decent and kind manner. It is essential to serve patients with sense of
empathy in order to understand their challenges and provide them with suitable services.
Compassionate treatment is also believed to be helpful in reducing the anxiety of patients
along with assuring that the overall well-being of patients is to be considered rather than
seeking mere improvement in their physical condition. This approach states that they are
being cared for and respected irrespective of the circumstances of their health (Foulds and et.
al., 2015).
Bramhall, (2014) states that compassion and care centred nursing approach requires
equal participation of the patients as well. Care centred approach helps in identifying needs of
clients and fulfilling same with the provision of quality service by health professional. It is
essential to adopt emphatic approach in treating patients in the manner that they desire (Barr
and Dowding, 2015). There is an ideal level of communication amongst both parties so that
they could be included in the process of service provision and the status of their health could
be improved. The facilitation of ideal communication helps in forming a clear understanding
of the patient needs in terms of health. The inculcation of communication can solely be
carried out by a leader through the introduction of institution culture in communication
(McGowan and Stokes, 2015). The tool for communication makes sure that there is an
alteration in the manner operations are carried out and making positive changes in the service
which are delivered to clients.
The service providers are responsible to look after various needs of clients such as
diet chart and precautionary measures along with providing ideal treatment. If the service
provider is not able to fulfil his or her duties then it may result in failure in meeting the
demand of the patient (Ward, 2016). Therefore it is essential for a leader to make sure that
nurses with best behaviour are appointed to take care of vulnerable and anxious patients. It
can be implied that compassion in leadership stands crucial as it helpful in attaining positive

health results and well-being outcomes of people. The relationship between leader and
service user is supplied with empathy, care and respect which can be referred to as intelligent
kindness. The results of compassion in leadership practices can be ascertained through
confidence and perception of patients in context of a healthcare institution. There is an
emerging need to integrate compassionate care in the provision of health service to patients
and there is the need to promote and gradually introduce it in the culture of healthcare
institution. Lachman, (2012) states that leaders who have been successful in the prioritizing
of tasks and delivering the compassionate and caring services have emerged to be more
effective than service rendered through other means. It is essential for a nurse to portray
characteristics such as being humble, patient and empathetic so that level of satisfaction of
patient could be enhanced. It is extremely important for a leader to opt for a transformational
approach (Kim and et. al., 2016). The transformational approach helps a leader to be more
concerned to expectations of patients and empowers the leader to take actions to meet the
expectations of the patient (Ciulla, 2014). However, there are numerous instances where
peculiar challenges are encountered by a healthcare institution, which need to be dealt with in
a rapid manner. Under those circumstances, it is essential for a leader to opt for the situational
leadership approach and to do what is best for the institution and the situation at hand (Doody
and Doody, 2012).
In the healthcare sector, it is required to manage each and every activity in an
appropriate manner according to patients' needs and their requirement. In this regard, it is the
responsibility of a leader to develop an effective clinical team who will contribute their
services to achieve organizational goals easily (Dignam, 2012). Through this process,
different leaders provide their effective services to develop a skilled workforce that could be
influenced to develop a positive environment in their workplace. This sector requires an
effective workforce who will help manage health care activities in an appropriate manner.
Employees of such organization should have to be kind and well experienced to help provide
quality services to their patients (Curtis, Vries, and Sheerin, 2011). The leader of such
organization works with a specific strategy to provide motivation to employees toward their
objectives.
Health care is a service sector in which each and every patient requires appropriate
services according to their disease and need. A leader plays the most important role in
providing effective training to their employees to enhance their interpersonal skill and
understanding level of customers. These kinds of things help to provide quality services to
others. This process requires new ideas and different working approaches according to

several situations. In it, different leadership style helps to develop a specific clinical team as
democratic leadership, autocratic leadership, situational leadership, Laissez-Faire leadership,
transformational leadership and transactional leadership (Scully, 2015).
Democratic leadership is a unique style in which leaders encourage their employees to
take participation in decision making process of the organisation. In this process, they
provide responsibility to their workforce to provide their thoughts and ideas toward
organisational situations. The Leader assigns roles and responsibilities to members for
specific work and then they need to provide their ideas and feedbacks toward each and every
situation (Doody and Doody, 2012). These type of leader are encourage to make effective
communication to interact with each person easily.
In autocratic approach, the leader do not involve their subordinates at the time of
making decision. They are very strict and punishable by nature. For them it is required that
workforce done their work with their own responsibility and they do not accept any error in
working aspects. These type of leaders are very quick to take decision according to several
situations. In health care sector, these kinds of leadership style helps to make effective
working activity as per exact timing (Rigolosi, 2012).
Situational leadership is useful in health care sector to manage complex and typical
situations easily (Hutchinson and Jackson, 2013). These type of leaders always work to
enhance their skills to face different challenges and situations in their organisation.
Situational leaders always provide effective guideline and direction to their employees to face
each challenges as per the requirement of organisation and patients.
Laissez-faire leadership is, sometimes, not an effective leadership approach because
in it, leaders provide all working responsibilities to their employees to handle the situation
according to their skill. When leader delegate more power to their workers than necessary,
then they like to adopt their own working style which most of the time results in low
productivity. They are very different to situational leaders and their working approach and
style are also very different to others. They help to provide clear direction to their workforce,
according to health care sector needy.
Transformational leadership is a specific working approach in which leaders believe
to face several challenges easily. They play the most important role to develop an effective
skill in their workforce easily. Transformational leaders provide their services by focusing on
their clients demand and need (Dignam, 2012). Their main objective is to boost confidence
level of their employees to achieve organisational goal and objectives.

On the other hand, Transactional leadership is a different style in which a leader plays
a most important role to provide rewards as well as punishment according to employees
working approach. These leaders are very disciplinary and confident in their working
approaches. In health care sector those leaders provide effective contribution to improve their
services easily. (Pepin and et.al., 2011)
(Im,Park and Kim,2012) accent that, leadership is important for compassionate team
as well as in nursing there is requirement of group which is full of energy to meet day to day
activity. Compassion in employees is needed in nursing team to get work done in proper
manner and can provide the best services to patients. Although, there is a requirement of
leaders to guide staff members on how they have to work, members need ensure they play
their individual roles very well. Leadership is important for every kind of business for
rendering better services to their clients because leaders motivate personnel and give them
guidance to achieve both individual goal and organizational goals. Services which must be
provided to patient are care, love, kindness and humanity all these is necessary for faster
recovery of person who is suffering from any diseases.
In health care institutions, satisfaction of patients and their experience is needed
because no one wants to compromise with their health and safety (Scully, 2015). Better result
can be possibly achieved when everyone is working compassionately with each to provide
health services to patients. When staff is understandable, kind, helpful then all these reduce
anxiety and make them feel that everyone in the care centre is their responsibility and
therefore seek their well-being and want them to overcome from their health issues as fast as
possible.
If personnel are compassionate towards their company and customers and leaders
provide guidance, then there is proper growth as well development of the working culture of
the institution. Every department has a team, which is guided by leaders that manage the
activities of the team for better outcomes. Thus, in simple terms it can be said that a leader
plays vital role in building environment, which is full of care and compassion due to the fact
that both care and compassion are important in health care and safety centres.
(Yang, Huang and Wu., 2011) This study aims to examine whether the impact of
teamwork on project performance was moderated by the following data class variables:
industry sector, total installed cost, owner regulation, initial site, team size, complexity,
project type, and international involvement. Team work in health is important because when
two or more people are doing same work with their different skills and knowledge, then it is

easy for them to achieve goal and objectives which is pre-determined. Everyone is sharing a
common vision and work for which the leader is supporting and encouraging to achieve
better outcomes. (Pepin, and et.al., 2011) leader have to provide training and development
program to the staff members of health care society. So, they can work in proper manner with
the added skill gained through the training program to provide recovery services to patients.
Thus, specific knowledge and capabilities are required for the provision of specific services.
There are several leadership approaches and theories, which assist leader in
maintaining culture of care and compassionate. Role of leadership is very important in the
field of health and social care. Caring and compassionate are two key features that should be
exhibited in a good leader so that each and every of the issues associated with workers as
well as service users can be resolved in efficient manner.
Almost all of the patients need extreme caring since they exists in a sensitive stage
and it is so crucial to deal with them in a proper way. Therefore, it is the responsibility and
chores of leaders to make their team abreast with this concept and teach them for handling
people in a warm or tender way. In this context, employees ought to behave in sympathetic
style so that patients do not feel alone but rather feel that their conditions and concerns are
being heard and acted upon. This will as a result helps overall health care sector in delivering
best medications related services to large number of civilians.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded that leaders play crucial role in showing right direction to clinical
team. If they have capacity to motivate their team members to expand their limits and provide
better service to service users. Managers are required to spend more time with clinical teams
to have a better understanding about what qualities a team member possesses. Along with
this, good leaders can make much profitable decisions while handling a team. Some of
qualities that a leader should have are commitment, extra efforts when it is essential and
ability to identify patient needs in order to better serve them in accordance to their
requirements.
