This paper looks at the health issue of Chlamydia and the
immediate health needs for young people between the age group
of 15-30 years in Southwark London.
Chlamydia is a type of sexually transmitted disease which is
transferred by having sex with people who have Chlamydia
(Lanjouw et al. 2016). Unprotected sex is the main cause behind
Chlamydia associated with symptom of painful urination, vaginal
discharge in females and painful sexual intercourse. The socio-
cultural influences that might be leading to diagnosis of
chlamydia in the youths of Southwark include poverty, limited
knowledge about Chlamydia and lack of access to adequate
service. The psychosocial factors that lead people to this pathway
include poor attitude towards safety during sexual behaviour,
intimate partner violence and binge drinking. Political factors that
may drive people to this pathway include lack of access to
sponsored health services and lack of focus on sexual education
in the community (O’leary et al. 2015). Hence, evaluating risk
and required service for the client group will be important.
Youths living in Southwark have been selected for this paper as
youths in this region has been reported to have high rate of
Chlamydia. The region is ranked third as per 2017 statistics on
new diagnosis of sexually transmitted infection (STI). In 2017, the
rate of reported rate of Chlamydia diagnosis in Southwark was
double than of London (Public Health Departments 2018). This
justified the rational for choosing the topic.

The commissioning for Chlamydia screening is done by including
provider of internet-based Chlamydia screening in
commissioner’s contract. Partner notification standards and
turnaround time are also included in the commissioning (Public
Health England 2015).
GP contraceptive service and health promotion initiatives are
needed to prevent Chlamydia in the target group. In case of
Southwark, Sexual and Reproductive Health services are
focussing on meeting health needs of the target group. However,
the gap in service is that there is lack of integration of health and
social services for the group and this is leading to social isolation
and multiple deprivations for the target group (Walker, 2016).
Health and social services working together can address
challenges by supporting people to mitigate adversities in their
life and increase their access to all methods of contraception.

fragmentation of current service provision due to lack of access
to service and this is said because primary care services are not
accessible to the group. There is no integration of service and no
response has been taken to address financial challenges for the
group. This fragmented service is having an impact on the youths
with Chlamydia because lack of access to high quality service is
leading to additional complications and mental health issues for
the client group (Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group 2018).

Currently, only Sexual and Reproductive Health services and
young people sexual health services present in Southwark to
meet the needs of the client group. However, services like the
‘Wise Up to Sexual Health (WUSH) are not effective in reducing
disparities because no locally commissioned young people
services exist in the community. This may hamper efforts to
prevent unplanned pregnancy (Southwark Clinical Commissioning
Group 2018
).
To improve current services in Southwark, it is recommended to
engage in efforts to create sustainable health service in the
future. By focusing on early identification and diagnosis,
expensive treatment and high cost can be avoided. Development
of more number of integrated services can also aid in offering
patient-centred response. For health care professionals working
in these services, there is a need to bring a change in attitude so
that values of patient-centered care are embraced. This would
help to actively identify the needs of the target population and
work differently to coordinate care in response to specific needs.
